1992 Mercedes-benz 300se Base Sedan 4-door 3.2l on 2040-cars
Seattle, Washington, United States
OWNERSHIP:
Bought this car about 5 years ago to signify a momentous occasion in my life; loved and pampered this car. Only drove it on weekends and outtings. Never abused or neglected. THE GOODIES: *Has custom mercedes black on black rims *Has euro rear tail lights *Has remote keyless entry fob (works) *self-suction door jambs *dyno=matted trunk wired for sound system *aftermarket Alpine stereo THE HISTORY: *always had the best of synthetic oil changes and the top of the line maintenance items on it *Went out of country for business for a year; and left it with my dad for safekeeping *Dad gave it to my idiot brother who was using it and decided to "sup it up" with a stereo system. *He hired an idiot off Craigslist to have the car dyno-matted and a stereo system installed with amps and subs and the whole 9-yards. *I say IDIOT cuz shortly after the stereo install, the car started having electrical problems: like the windshield wipers would turn on-off by themselves spontaneously, the lights on the dashboard will flicker on and off; the headlights/sidemarkers would sometimes work and sometimes not; the stereo itself would sometimes turn on and sometimes not. Mainly it would turn on if you hit the dashboard with your fist, then it stays on for about 10 minutes, then begins to cut in/out again. *It was like the car had a mind of it's own, everything related to behind the stereo console in terms of heating/venting, electrical lighting, etc....would go on/off or sometimes work and sometimes didn't. There's no way to predict it's behavior. *Took it to dealership and they said, it was definitely an electrical short from all the wiring of the sound system (it was a whole mess of wires and such); causing electrical shortages randomly. They would not touch the job because it was too messy/complicated. Suggested I go to a sound shop and have the system uninstalled. *Took it to CARTOYS and had them remove all the wiring for the sound system and hook everything back to original. They removed all the subs and amps; but said that the stereo itself was hard-wired (idiot cut/splice my engine wire harness) into the car's electricals and so was the speaker system. They refused to continue doing the job. *I was heartbroken and didn't know what to do (no one reputable would work on it) & I certainly didn't want to sell it - so I kept it and drove it only sunny days when I was home *Since the windshield wipers are temper-mental and so is the speedometer cable and everything else in the car - I can't drive it unless it's sunny..............and we live in Seattle (rains 80% of the time)!............so it's been sitting.....but I go out and start it, and wash it, and drive it around the block every two weeks just to have it still running and stuff. It still starts right up on first turn right now - still runs great - and will pass emissions/smog test right now. MECHANICS: *As all cars of this age and model, transmission was slipping a bit - so I had the transmission rebuilt shortly after I bought it (darn luck). *Have receipt for $1851 transmission rebuild (rebuild, not used junkyard swap) in 5/22/08 (so the warranty has expired obviously). *Have various receipts of parts (nothing extraordinary) bought: routine maintenance parts like royal purple oil, oil filter, battery, fuse, spark plugs, etc... *Aside from transmission haven't needed much maintenance at all So there you have it - car's accessories functions has intermittent working/failure due to electrical shortage from improper stereo system install. Engine and transmission work fine/great - no problems. Just electrical short randomly affecting various functions. |

Petrolicious shows Mercedes 280SL as architecture in motion
Wed, Jun 17 2015While still an absolute beauty today, the design of the pagoda-roof W113 Mercedes-Benz SL was revolutionary when it debuted. Moving away from the soft curves of the previous SL models, the all-new generation brought an upright, angular shape that was as much architectural as automotive. In the latest video from Petrolicious, owner and architect Daniel Monti expounds on the inspiration that he gets from his 1969 280SL's fantastic styling. The roof is the most famous design feature of this generation of SL. Look at the top from the front or back, and you can see a gentle, downward arc that evokes the look of a pagoda. That one styling element is also a fabulous counterpoint to a vehicle that is largely more angular than curvaceous. Petrolicious wonderfully illustrates how some of the SL's form-follows-function design aesthetic can be found in the architect's work in this video's heaping helping of mid-century modern goodness.

These cars are headed to the Great Crusher In The Sky
Fri, 24 Aug 2012It happens every year. We bid adieu to some cars and trucks that will be missed, and say good riddance to others wondering how they stayed around so long. Whether they're being killed off for slow sales or due to a new product coming along to replace them, the list of vehicles being discontinued after 2012 is surprisingly long and diverse.
CNN Money has compiled a list of departing vehicles, to which we've added a few more of our own. In the slow sales column, cars like the Lexus HS 250h, Mercedes-Benz R-Class and the full Maybach lineup appear, while the Ford Escape Hybrid, Mazda CX-7 and Hyundai Veracruz are all having their gaps filled with more modern and more fuel-efficient alternatives. Obvious exceptions to the rule include models that still sell in decent numbers like the Jeep Liberty and the Chrysler Town & Country (which will eventually be replaced by a crossover-like vehicle).
Check out our gallery of discontinued cars above, then scroll down for more information.
