Up for sale is my 1981 Mercedes-Benz 300TD with ~221,000 miles. It has been my daily driver for a little over a year, during which time I have repaired several small items which had been neglected. The car originally came from California and, we were told, ended up in East Tennessee about 4 years ago. With its California heritage, there is no rust that we can find on the vehicle. While we are talking about the body, there is one small dent in the rear liftgate (in photos) and a few places here and there where clear coat or paint is chipped but nothing down to metal (tried to get pictures, but couldn't get them to show up).
Some of the small repairs that were done while I owned the car: I replaced some of the striker plates so the doors would shut better. I repaired the odometer, it had gone out about six months before we bought it but was not the previous owners daily driver. Repaired the rear liftgate so that it stays up. Replaced the glowplug relay. Recharged the air conditioner, it blows cold with recharge. Replaced the drivers window regulator with a manual regulator. We were unable to diagnose the problem with the window, so we made the driver's side manual so it would never go out again. The parts from the electric drivers window control are included and all other power windows work. Also all exterior lights work.
The interior is tan in color and in good shape. There is a small tear in the driver's seat that I repaired so that it would not grow (in photos). There are some stains in the cargo area that look like red dye (in photos). Dash is not cracked, we were told it had been replaced in California. All instruments work. All floormats are still there, and there is a set of rubber mats also included. No leaks. It has the original Becker AM/FM cassette stereo. Radio works great, cassette player doesn't seem to. If you can find one of those cassette head cleaners, it probably would. The vacuum locks leak down after a while and open very slowly unless the car is running.
The engine starts and runs well. It consistently has gotten 27 mpg with most of the driving in town. It burns about a quart of oil every four tanks of fuel, mostly when pulling from idle. I did general maintenance on the engine (changing oil, filters, etc) but no problems mechanically. We took it on about 4 or so 600 mile trips with no problems. No problems around town either for that matter. Transmission shifts smoothly. Michelin tires have about 80% life left in them.
These are very popular for a biodiesel or veggie oil conversion since they have extra space in the back. They also have a reputation to run forever. You probably already know these things if you are looking at one of these station wagons anyway though.
This car is in condition as represented, but is sold as-is.

VW, Fiat, Mercedes could be CNG winners in Europe
Fri, Dec 12 2014Fiat ads in the US try to play up the exotic, sexy side of Italian culture. On the home front in Italy, however, passenger-vehicle sales are marked by something less edgy and quite a bit more practical: the growth of compressed-natural-gas (CNG) powered car sales. In fact, Italy is leading a group of European countries where CNG sales are on the upswing and may be benefiting automakers like VW, Fiat and Mercedes-Benz, according to Automotive News. VW started sales of its Golf TGI natural-gas vehicle this year – the company's fourth in Europe – while Mercedes-Benz added a natural-gas B-class model. Fiat accounts for about 50 percent of CNG vehicles sold on the continent. In all, Europe's CNG sales through September totaled about 67,000, up seven percent from a year earlier, Automotive News Europe says, citing research firm JATO Dynamics. And the number of CNG vehicles on Europe's roads could jump tenfold within the next decade. The draw is a combination of lower refueling prices and a CNG drivetrain that typically emits less CO2 than diesel vehicles. As for Italy, about five percent of new-vehicle sales are CNG. To put that into perspective, hybrids, battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and diesels combined to account for about 4.2 percent of US vehicle sales last year. New Die Hard movie wrecked 132 cars in $11 million chase scene [w/video]
Sat, 16 Feb 2013It would seem the act of dying hard brings with it lots of wanton destruction of the four-wheeled kind. According to John Moore, director of A Good Day To Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis, There were 132 (cars) that could never be used again. Another 518 required a lot of work. And damn right there were some good cars there... That's the fun of it."
Please join us in one great big collective sigh. Done? Okay, let's continue.
"With Die Hard it's about how audacious the action is," says Moore. "So you have to drive over a Lamborghini. An actual one. And yes it hurts me. I'm a car fanatic." Yeah. Sounds like it hurt really bad... though not as bad as the final tally after all the carnage had been counted: "Someone showed me the numbers on the car chase and soup to nuts, you put it all together it was like an $11 million sequence."
Mercedes-Benz USA considering moving south
Wed, Dec 17 2014Mercedes-Benz may be a German automaker first and foremost, but it's a global operation. Among its many offices around the world, the company employs some 800 staffers at its US headquarters in New Jersey. But that office could be moving down South in the near future. According to reports in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Wall Street Journal and Automotive News, Mercedes is looking into relocating its American head office from Montvale, NJ, where it's been based since 1972, to one of several locations under consideration below the Mason-Dixon line. Among the front-runners is Atlanta, where Porsche bases its North American operations. The presence of a trained workforce, necessary infrastructure, compliant officials and proximity to a major hub for international air traffic could make the Georgian metropolis an attractive proposition for Mercedes. Several locations in North Carolina are also said to be under consideration, as well. Either way, MBUSA's relocation to the South would put it closer to its assembly plant in Tuscaloosa, AL, and to the Port of Brunswick near Savannah from which it ships out those vehicles made in Alabama to points overseas. The relocation project is reportedly being handled by commercial real-estate firm JLL Inc, which is helping Toyota handle its relocation from southern California and Ohio to Texas. Sources don't expect, however, for New Jersey to let Mercedes go without a fight. The state's Grow NJ Assistance Program could offer MBUSA an attractive incentives package to stay in Montvale. The company previously planned in 1998 to relocate to Pearl River, NY, but ultimately ended up staying in Jersey.
