1957 Mercedes Benz 190SL Convertible

Extremely Rare Factory Strawberry Over Camel Leather

Concours Grade

Many Photos Below Description

Used as Hagerty Insurance Display Vehicle at Several Events

The Mercedes Benz 190SL is one of the most attractive European vehicles of it’s time. As the 190SL came in a various amount of color options, there are a few that stand out the most. The particular Strawberry Metallic color choice is certainly one to talk about. From 1955 to 1963, less than 26,000 190SLs were produced and only a hand full, less than 50, left the line with the rare color combination of Strawberry Metallic (DB 5430) over Camel Leather. Today, nearly 60 years later, it is few and far between to locate a Strawberry Metallic 190SL, especially with the Camel Leather interior in perfect running condition.

Furthermore, this 1957 Mercedes Benz 190SL is prime example of an excellent matching numbers historic vehicle. With a very detailed restoration completed in 2005, with receipts and write ups attached, gives this 190SL an even more rare sight to see. This vehicle comes with a very extensive list of service records and restoration invoices. As well as a complete tool kit with the spare tire sitting properly in the trunk. In the glove box you will find the owner’s manual. The chrome bumpers and trim show a true mirror finished with no defects to be found. As you move underneath the vehicle you can see the flawless under body with solid exhaust piping running from front to back. As you open the door and step into the drivers seat you first take notice to the most desired Camel leather covering the top of the dash and all the way around to the cushion below. There is nothing more exciting than turning the key to a 1957 Mercedes Benz and hearing it start up right away. Pop the front bonnet and have a peak at the immaculate engine bay. The engine runs just as it did coming off the line 57 years ago. Freshly installed are Weber carburetors which were much more desired by customers in years after production. Not to be alarmed though, the original Solex carburetors are cleaned up & packed in a box which will be included with the vehicle.  As you get in the car to drive you can clearly feel the true quality of this 190SL. This vehicle retains the original steering wheel to make the vehicle that much more special, not refurbished or replaced in 57 years! This spectacular example makes for the perfect Sunny Sunday Driver as all lights and signals are in proper working order or the cruiser to and from the Concours.

Chris Harris falls in love with Mercedes-AMG GT at Laguna Seca

Thu, Dec 4 2014

It's not every day that an automaker goes down a market segment and still comes off as even more ambitious, but that's exactly what Mercedes has done with the new AMG GT. While the SLS was bigger and more expensive, with the new GT, Mercedes has set its sights on one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. That, of course, would be the Porsche 911, and the big question is whether Benz has achieved its target. For the answer, we turn to none other than the Monkey himself – the inimitable Chris Harris, who recently went solo with his own YouTube channel. And for his latest segment, he took the latest German sports car around no less suitable a track than Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Top 10 small cars with the longest total driving range

Thu, Mar 19 2015

Editor's Note: Since this article was originally posted in the spring of 2015, much has changed in the automotive landscape, especially among those shopping for small car economy. With thanks to Volkswagen for their blatant cheating – and subsequent cover-up – on diesel emissions, the largest player in the diesel passenger car segment isn't playing – they're paying; billions are going for both car buybacks and federally-imposed penalties. And for a few VW execs there exists the very real possibility of jail. With the absence of a big player and the abrupt entrance – via Chevy's new Bolt – of an affordable EV with 200+ miles of range, we've limited the diesel listings to Jaguar's new XE. And for those wanting an updated look at efficiency and range, Autoblog has it – or the EPA has it. Long before electric vehicles were part of the mainstream conversation, car lovers and skinflints alike would boast about the total range of their vehicles. There's something about getting farther down the road on one tank of gas that inflames the competitive spirit, almost as much as horsepower output or top speed. Of course, the vehicles with the very best range on today's market are almost all big trucks and SUVs; virtually all have the ability to carry massive reserves of fuel. Top up a standard Chevy Suburban and you can expect to travel almost 700 miles (you'll need to stop before the Suburban stops...), while a diesel-fed Jeep Grand Cherokee manages almost as many. But what about vehicles that are smaller? The EPA has, essentially, three classifications for 'small' vehicles: Minicompact, Subcompact and Compact. All three are measured based on interior volume, meaning that some cars with rather large exterior dimensions and engines slot in next to traditional small cars. But even though impressive GT coupes from Porsche, Bentley and Mercedes-Benz may have much larger gas tanks to feed their powerful engines, that capacity is offset by higher rates of consumption... in most cases. We used the EPA's Fuel Economy Guide for model year 2017 cars as a start, calculating the official highway miles per gallon rating with each vehicle's tank capacity. The resulting numbers aren't necessarily real world, but they do offer a spectrum for total theoretical range. The eventual top ten surprised me on a few occasions, and comprised quite a varied list of vehicles. 10.

Race recap: 2016 Belgian Grand Prix is a dozen angry laps

Mon, Aug 29 2016

The calm of the Formula One summer break ended with the tumult of the Belgian Grand Prix. The first two days included unusual tire pressures and grid penalties; Mercedes-AMG Petronas' Lewis Hamilton started 21st because of a 55-place grid penalty for engine and gearbox changes, McLaren's Fernando Alonso started 22nd due to a 60-place penalty for the same offenses. The bedlam rolled right into what was effectively an 11-or 12-lap race. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg took off from pole and the cameras barely bothered with him until he took the checkered flag 44 laps later. Red Bull's Max Verstappen bogged from second on the grid, got swallowed by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen on the way to Turn 1, then attempted to recover by sticking his Red Bull's nose between Raikkonen's sidepod and the apex at the first corner. Vettel, who didn't see Verstappen, turned into La Source leaving only enough room for Raikkonen. Three cars don't fit in a space for two cars. Vettel spun, Raikkonen and Verstappen clobbered one another and all three drivers had to pit for repairs. Force India's Nico Hulkenberg zig-zagged his way into second ahead of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, Williams' Valtteri Bottas, and Sergio Perez in the second Force India. On Lap 6 Kevin Magnussen lost his Renault at Raidillon at the top of Eau Rouge and flew backward into an enormous crash. Magnussen escaped with just a cut ankle. The Safety Car paraded the field for four laps before officials red flagged the race to repair the barriers. When racing resumed on Lap 10, Rosberg led Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, Alonso, and Hamilton. Ricciardo stayed ahead of Hamilton to keep second place at the end of the race, Hamilton easily got around Alonso and Hulkenberg to lock up third. Hulkenberg – who'd given up second to Ricciardo by pitting during the Safety Car period – earned another career-best fourth position ahead of teammate Perez in fifth, followed by Vettel and Alonso on recovery drives, Bottas, Raikkonen, and Felipe Massa taking 10th in the second Williams. Rosberg reignited his Driver's Championship charge with the victory, closing to nine points of leader Hamilton. We could argue that Hamilton had an equally good day by driving from 21st to third, limiting his loss to only 10 points. About that Verstappen, though... We've seen far more experienced drivers attempt the same move Verstappen made into Turn 1 – Raikkonen on Bottas in Russia in 2015, for instance.
