I am putting my 1987 Mercedes Benz 190e 2.3-16 up for sale. The car has 148,688 miles on it and a clean title. Although since the car is my daily driver, milage will slowly creep up. I have a lot to say about this car and I want to be a through and honest as possible in the listing so I will start from the beginning.

-THE HISTORY-
Here is an excellent article giving a background about the car's DTM history and e30 m3 rival. Mercedes manufactured almost 2,000,000 W201s (190e/190d) of which 1.4% were 16 valve variants. 2,000 190e 2.3-16s were imported to the United States for the 1986/1987 model years, of which about 800 had the dogleg 5speed transmission like mine.

The Motortrend article says "EXPECT TO PAY:
Concours-ready, $19,900; solid driver, $16,300; tired runner, $7200 (Source: Hagerty Price Guide)"

-MY CAR BEFORE MY OWNERSHIP-
My car was purchased in Idaho in February 1987 after being manufactured in Germany in September 1986. It spent most of its life in California. Around 2005 it moved to Indiana. I suspect around this time it was taken off the road due to failing emissions although I am not 100% sure. About 4 years ago the person I purchased the car from bought the car in Chicago. It was not running but stored inside on jack stands. He had the car for around 3 years stored inside on jack stands. He took care of the car but was unable to get it running.

-MY CAR DURING MY OWNERSHIP-
I purchased my car on November 14, 2012 with the intent to fully restore it. I immediately tore into the engine and did the following work.

-Replaced the OVP relay
-Replaced all the fuel injectors
-Replaced the fuel line from the fuel distributor to the fourth cylinder
-Tested virtually all electrical components
-Replaced the airflow meter assembly
-Replaced the fuel distributor
-Replaced the EHA valve
-Replaced all vacuum lines
-All new injector seals
-Opened up the valve cover,
-New timing chain
-New timing chain hydraulic tensioned.
-New timing chain guide rails
-Brought the car into a Bosch/Mercedes specialist to check my work
-Tuned the Air/Fuel ratio
-Checked over my work and everything is up to standard.
-
-Got the car running in May-
-
-New shift linkage bushings
-Replaced the AC Compressor
-fixed residuale vacuum leaks
-Replaced the speakers. I kept the stock head unit for originality but out of the factory it was a terrible system. The new speakers are Alpines. They fit under the speaker covers in the dash but not on the rear deck. While they look good on the rear deck I have the original speakers and speaker covers if you don't like them.
-
-Extra Parts-
-
-Extra intake manifold
-3 or 4 extra fuel distributors
-Extra fuel injectors and fuel lines
-2 extra airflow meter assemblies
-New rear window motors
-Headlight wipers and motors. I removed them because I really dislike the way they look but they worked when they were on.

-THE FLAWS-
-The front spoiler has a hairline crack as pictured
-The front dash has a crack. Fortunately the crack goes right down the center of the car and almost looks like it is supposed to be there. Point is the dash is cracked in the best way possible. There is also a small crack by the right speaker.
-The rear windows do not work. They used to but stopped suddenly back in December. I have new motors that work but haven't installed them.
-The passenger power seat doesn't always move forwards and back. The other functions do (up/down, headrest up/down, tilt forward and back). It's only a connection issue but I just haven't opened the switch up to repair it.
-Sometimes the idle control valve gets stuck and it idles at 1500 as opposed to 1000. A throttle blip always fixes the issue and idle returns back to 1000. I might get around to fixing that this weekend but it's honestly a minor issue.
-There is a dime sized V shaped tear in the driver's seat. It is repaired and barley noticeable but it is there and pictured.
-There is a 1 inch by 1/8 of an inch on the hood where the clear coat is gone. Again pictured. You have to really look to see it.

-I have highlighted all of the flaws I can honestly think of with the car. This way there are no surprises for you and you know exactly the car you are coming to see. It is not a garage queen with 10,000 miles on it but this car was made to be driven, was driven, and is a very good example of this car.

-THE GOOD-
-Despite not being on the road for a few years, this car was always well taken car of. The interior is immaculate, the exterior is very, very good. There is absolutely NO RUST on this car's chassis or body. It was not left outside to rot, it was not forgotten of, it was not thrown together by hack mechanics. The title is CLEAN and in hand.
-The car drives like it was just driven out of the factory. The engine is great and pulls up through the rpm range. It hasn't ever overheated or shown any issues whatsoever since I got it running (Once had it up to 143 mph without incident...)
-The Getrag 5speed dogleg gearbox shift smooth and properly.
-The Limited Slip differential works.
-The Hydraulic Self Leveling Rear suspension works.
-The Brakes and Suspension are in good shape.
-Steering is tight.
-Chassis is still extremely stiff.
-Original wheels and full size spare
-Tires have good tread
-Cosworth exhaust note still sounds amazing
-Original first aid kit is included and the original seal is still not broken!

-The car really drives like new. Again this is not a garage queen, it is a driver's car.

EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi

Sun, 25 Nov 2012

EVO has come out with another gotta-watch-it video, throwing its 2012 Car of the Year contestants around the UK's 1.5-mile Blyton Park track. It's actually a 15-minute teaser for the full-length DVD detailing the magazine's Car of the Year selection, but the tease is worth every penny free second.
Tiff Needell and sports car racer Richard Meaden handle the wheel duties, the two driving five pairs of sports cars: Lotus Exige S vs. Porsche Boxster S, Morgan Three-Wheeler vs. Toyota GT86, BMW M135i vs. Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series vs. Alpina B3 GT3, the marquee event pits the McLaren MP4-12C vs. the Pagani Huayra. After a head-to-head lap with commentary during drifts, Meaden takes each car out to set a representative lap time.
You'll find the verdicts, lots of tire smoke, and lines like "Anything you can do sideways I can do sideways" in the video below.

Why all of this year's F1 noses are so ugly [w/video]

Fri, 31 Jan 2014

If you're a serious fan of Formula One, you already know all about The Great Nosecone Conundrum of 2014. Those given to parsing each year's F1 regulations predicted the strong possibility of the so-called "anteater" noses as far back as early December 2013. Highly suggestive visual evidence first came after Caterham's crash test in early January, with further proof coming as soon as Williams showed a rendering of the FW36 challenger for this year's championship. That car earned a name that wasn't nearly so kind as "anteater."
Casual followers of the sport - or anyone who gets the feed from this site - probably don't know what's happening, except to wonder why the current year's F1 cars are led by appendages that would make Cyrano de Bergerac feel a whole lot better about himself.
The short answer to the question of ugsome F1 noses is "FIA regulations and safety." The reason there are various kinds of ugsome noses is simpler: engineers. The same boffins who have given us advances including carbon fiber monocoques, six-wheeled cars, double diffusers and Drag Reduction Systems are bred to do everything in their power to exploit every possible freedom in the regulations to make the cars they're building go faster - the caveat being that those advances have to work within the overall philosophy of the whole car.

Artist imagines eerie world where cars have no wheels

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

The wheel ranks right up there with the telescope and four-slice toaster in the pantheon of inventions that have moved humankind forward. But what if a circle in three dimensions had never occurred to anyone, and we all had just moved on without it? Perhaps we'd be driving around in Lucas Motors Landspeeders with anti-gravity engines. Or maybe we'd have the same cars we do today, just without wheels.
That's the thought experiment that seems to have led French photographer Renaud Marion to create his six-image series called Air Drive. The shots depict cars throughout many eras of motoring that look normal except for one thing: they have no wheels. The models used include a Jaguar XK120, Cadillac DeVille (shown above), Chevrolet El Camino and Camaro, and Mercedes-Benz SL and 300 roadsters.
Perhaps one day when our future becomes our past, you'll be able to walk the street and see with your own eyes the rust and patina of age on our nation's fleet of floating cars. Until then, Monsieur Marion's photographs will have to do.
