1985 Mercedes 190D Diesel - $5000 (Doylestown)

Dead Beat High bidder who never even looked at the car means that this great car is up for sale again.  Over 100 watchers last time.  Good luck, 3 days only!  Bid to buy, No Reserve!

I bought this amazing 1985 Mercedes diesel a while ago on EBAY to use as a commuter car.  Circumstances changed and it has been an extra car for us.  We've only put about 4000 miles on it since we bought it.  We have too many cars so it's time for one to go. Since I have used it so little, below I have included the original EBAY description from the time that I bought it.  His description was pretty accurate, please read it carefully.  There are a few things to add.  The power locks do not work but all locks work manually and with the key.  I replaced the radio which had a fault that was draining the battery.  I also replaced the battery. When the radio was replaced, the ashtray (never used) was taken out but I still have it and it will go with the car.   The interior is very nice with no cracks in the seats or dash.  However, some of the small interior plastic pieces , such as the clips for the visors have cracked with age. The heater blower works but the fan selector will only move to the first position for some reason that I haven't looked into.  When defrost is selected it will blow high.  The car has not been garaged in my ownership.  The rear brakes have begun to squeak occasionally so I bought some new brake pads but have not yet installed them.  The pads will go with the car.  In this era of Mercedes diesels, the transmissions shift firmly under heavy acceleration.  This can be easily modulated by easing up on the accelerator pedal.  Under light acceleration, you won't feel it.  Remember that this is a relatively small diesel so acceleration is never really brisk.  This will be a great car for the right buyer, but it is probably best suited to someone familiar with this era of Mercedes diesels.  Please remember the car is almost 30 years old.  I have a clear Pennsylvania title in hand.  I will take additional pictures of anything you want to see and send them by email.  Local inspections are welcome and encouraged.  Here is the description for the seller I bought it from:

Here is a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190D 2.2 Diesel finished in Diamond Blue over Cream Beige MB-Tex. The car was purchased through the Mercedes European delivery program in 1985 and had been used in a snowbird capacity in Longboat Key, FL generating very few miles (93,600 to date). About four years ago the car was passed from mother to son and shipped back to Connecticut where it has been rarely used as an extra car since. At this point, we could use the garage space and are not using the car enough to justify keeping it. It is in excellent condition, having been garaged and never exposed to harsh winter weather. The car runs beautifully and is very economical being a diesel.

The interior of the car is in almost perfect condition and shows very little wear. The MB-Tex is extremely durable and shows like new. The seats retain their original form and spring and are not flat. The carpets are very clean and free from major staining. The zebrano wood is also in great shape not having any cracks in the clear coat and having a deep color. There are no cracks in the dash nor any chips in the windshield. One flaw worth mentioning on the interior is that the rear left passenger's interior door trim has some shrink on the handle and rest but it does not take away from the overall excellent condition of the interior.

The exterior of the car is also in great shape with few imperfections. The paint holds a very deep shine from all the years of limited use and keeping the car garaged. I can not see any rust on any area of the car and I tried to photograph all areas prone to rust. The chrome, glass and rubber are all in great shape also being free from any major imperfections. The car does have a few bumps from being used by an elderly driver and from 25 years of use but nothing major or ugly. There are two impressions on the passenger's side lower door and fender panel which were caused from a tire tread on the highway. There is also some rash and scraping on the passenger's rear wheel well from the side of the garage door (this happened previously in the same place and was repaired). Overall, the exterior is in very good condition, the paint is extremely shiny and well preserved and it shows as a much newer car.

Mechanically, the car is also in very good condition. The car runs and drives very strong. The tires and brakes are in good condition. Within the last month the car has received a new exhaust. The blower and wiper motors have also recently been repaired. The exterior temperature gauge has become clouded and does not work and the rear windows will not work either, I have not looked into this problem. The front windows and sunroof work fine. The air conditioner has been updated to r-134a, however, it is not blowing cold air. All other items work as intended on the car.

This is an extremely clean and rare Mercedes 190D as there were not many imported and most that you find will have at least a couple hundred thousand miles and will be nowhere near this nice of shape. It has been very well kept and cared for and is in very good condition. If I had a 4th garage, I would keep the car.

On Oct-05-13 at 09:22:45 PDT, seller added the following information:

I have had several questions about rust on the car.  Please remember that even though this car is in very good shape, it is almost 30 years old.  Please don't expect a new car.  In response to the rust questions, I made closer inspection of the car.  There is some minor surface rust on the scrape above the wheel well that is described in the ad.  I also noticed very small bubbles on both sides of the body at the lower rear edge of the back doors.  The rocker on the driver side had a little larger paint bubble.  I chipped that bubble off and the metal is solid under that chip. I can email pictures to anyone that is interested in seeing these areas.  If you want the car as an economical and safe daily driver, I don't think these areas need to be fixed as they are very small and in no way effect drivability.  You opinions may differ.

Five reasons to love, or hate, the culture of German cars

Thu, Mar 5 2015

A few months back, we took a 500-foot view of the culture of American cars, dissecting prides and prejudices on our way to the conclusion that automotive allegiances can be simultaneously embraced and derided. We had so much fun with the narrative that we decided to do it again, this time taking a look at Germany and its world-renowned lineup of automakers, including the likes of Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen, among others. Join us below as we discuss the points and counterpoints that make or have made the German auto industry what it is today. And remember, Germany did pretty much invent the automobile, after all... The V12 Engine If America is known for the proliferation of the V8 engine, an argument could be made that Germany owns the V12. Yes, of course, other companies have created V12 engines – Ferrari, Jaguar and Lamborghini immediately come to mind – but the big 12-cylinder powerplants from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, in particular, have proven to be some of the most effortless, luxurious and downright over-built engines the world has ever seen. These days, having 12 cylinders is more a case of wretched excess than ever before, and yet, you can still stroll into your local BMW or Mercedes dealership and get a brand-new 760i, S600 or even an over-the-top G65 AMG, efficiency be damned. Best of all, since the majority of these German powerhouses depreciate as fast as an anchor sinks, nearly any auto enthusiast who dreams of a dozen cylinders can satisfy their carnal desires. Current Star: 2016 Mercedes-Maybach S600 View 28 Photos Diesel Engines Remember how we talked about those glorious V12 engines? Well, you can even get one from Audi that runs on diesel. If your compression-ignition fantasies err more on the side of fuel savings, that's no problem, either. Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen have got you covered, with engines starting as small as 800 cubic centimeters (Smart Fortwo). If you want something a little more practical, it's hard to argue with a VW Golf TDI, which will provide plenty of space for you and three of your best friends, plus a fair bit of luggage, all while returning 50-ish miles per gallon. For the purposes of this discussion, we'd rather focus on the asinine levels of torque provided by Germany's high-end diesel engines than the lower-end fuel sippers.

Zetsche's CEO tenure extended through 2016 at Daimler

Sun, 24 Feb 2013

There appear to be two takes on Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche having his contract extended for three more years, to 2016. A report in The Detroit News quotes the chairman of Daimler's supervisory board, Manfred Bischoff, talking up the stability at the top, "With today's extensions of the contracts of Dieter Zetsche and Thomas Weber, we are maintaining the important continuity at the top executive level." Bischoff also stated that that Zetsche has a plan to "further enhance Daimler's overall performance."
Over at Reuters, though, the three-year extension was seen as a lack of complete confidence in Zetsche's plans, since his contract was supposedly meant to be extended by five years. A spokesman said the board decided to extend executive contracts by only three years if the person was 60 or would turn 60 during the contract, but that was news to observers. Zetsche wants to make Mercedes-Benz the top selling luxury manufacturer globally by 2020, but has fallen to third place behind Audi and BMW. It hasn't held the top spot 2005, and investors judged it valued at half that of BMW at the end of 2012 once Daimler's truck business was subtracted.
Analysts cites the fact that Daimler stock hasn't bested its rivals but twice in twelve years, and that the company revised its profit target downward last year by nearly one billion euros, warning of stagnant earnings this year and will miss its original margin target for 2013.

These are the 'Greenest' and 'Meanest' cars in 2015

Fri, Feb 6 2015

As has become tradition, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has come up with a ranking of what it refers to as the "greenest" cars of 2015, and, by way of contrast, a list of the so-called "meanest" cars, so those who value eco-friendliness over all else can choose which vehicles they should or should not consider buying. As you may expect, electric cars make up the majority of the greenest cars on the list, but, perhaps surprisingly to many, the Tesla Model S didn't make the cut. It's worth noting, too, that where the electricity an owner uses to charge their electric vehicle has a big impact on its overall environmental impact. "A car that is charged using electricity generated from natural gas or renewables is going to have significantly less impact on the environment than one charged on a coal-heavy grid," says ACEEE lead vehicle analyst Shruti Vaidyanathan. The ACEEE's list for 2015 looks very different than it did in 2014. It's an interesting collection, though – and we're sure this goes without saying, really – we'd recommend doing a bit more research into each vehicle and how it might fit into your daily life before making any purchase decisions.
