1960 Mercedes-benz 190sl: Beautiful, Extremely Original & Mechanically Excellent on 2040-cars

Year:1960 Mileage:8112

Offered for sale is an absolutely beautiful, extremely original, entirely honest 1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL finished in rare, era-specific and factory correct Grey Blue (DB 166) over a factory correct red leather interior. Retaining its original matching numbers engine (with original Solex carburetors), its solid original undercarriage, its original factory spot-welded front fenders and stamped original hood and its original books, manuals, steering wheel, Becker radio, factory toolkit and tire changing tools, this is undoubtedly one of the finest original examples available on the market today, a true classic worthy of any collector’s warehouse or enthusiast’s garage.

The car’s correct and desirable Grey Blue finish is striking, a timeless and elegant livery that beautifully cloaks the 190SL’s flowing lines. Believed to be partially original, upon close inspection it appears that the paint received some cosmetic freshening what is likely more than two decades ago. Still in very original condition, the finish exhibits an expectedly light patina and is therefore not without its flaws, but it is consistently deep and lustrous, its minor blemishes telling the story of the car rather than detracting from its considerable appeal, something that is certainly substantiated by the pictures.

In addition to the factory spot-welded front fenders and original stamped hood, the body is entirely straight with excellent and consistent panel fits and gaps throughout. The car’s brightwork is also in beautiful original condition, exhibiting only minimal wear, which is also true of the original glass, rubber and color matched hubcaps and beauty rings, both adorning original wheels wrapped in Pirelli tires with plenty of remaining tread. A testament to the well cared for, 45 year, dry California existence that this beautiful example has been afforded, the car’s undercarriage and trunk are both original and entirely solid.

The car’s interior is also in beautiful condition, the red leather seats and carpets having been professionally reupholstered using the correct materials and patterns and exhibiting only nominal wear. The interior panels and dash are original to the car, maintaining a charmingly patinated condition consistent with the car’s well-maintained original history. The dash still houses all of its fully functional original gauges, original Becker Mexico radio, original speaker assembly, original clock and uncommonly unblemished original ivory steering wheel. The car’s tan canvas soft top shows only negligible wear, retaining a clear rear window, and the car comes with a rarely used hardtop that has accumulated a few storage scars over the year but is still entirely functional and presentable. Although the existing hardtop has perceptibly been with the car for decades, it is not original from the factory, however we do have an impeccable and correct large window hardtop available to the car’s next lucky owner.

The 190SL is also mechanically excellent, its original numbers matching engine firing up effortlessly, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through ear of the original transmission’s gears. Compression is excellent across all cylinders and the car’s original Solex carburetors have been recently tuned to ensure even acceleration and ample power to pull this agile little roadster to grin-inducing speeds. The car drives and brakes straight and true and ride quality is excellent, stable and comfortable whether tooling through town, winding through the canyons or cruising down the highway. Having had our in-house German master mechanic sort through the car mechanically, it truly performs like the well-maintained 108k original mile example that it is believed to be. Lastly, the engine compartment is entirely correct and exceptionally clean and the car retains its spare tire, changing tools, rare original tool kit.

This is an excellent and uncommon opportunity to acquire a breathtakingly beautiful, incredibly honest and extremely original example of one of Mercedes’ most beautiful classic designs. Whether you’re a serious collector or a weekend enthusiast, the car has all the right things going for it: strong matching numbers mechanicals (including the original Solex carburetors), original factory spot-welded front fenders, original stamped hood, an exceptionally straight body, a dry California provenance with a resultantly solid undercarriage, beautiful cosmetics and a rare and desirable factory correct color combination. With 190SLs continuing to appreciate at dizzying rates, this is an investment-grade example that deserves the consideration of any serious buyer.

Goodman Reed Motorcars

We’ve always had an appreciation for classic European cars and over the years have created an eclectic personal collection. We only buy cars that we’d personally be interested in owning and generally only sell them to make room for other acquisitions. That time has come for this Mercedes (if the price is right, of course – this isn’t a fire sale). We try to give accurate descriptions of the cars we’re selling, but we’re enthusiasts, not experts, and we encourage and are happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please do so before bidding, as the alternative harms our ability to make sales to other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before bidding.

For U.S. buyers a 10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end, the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Foreign buyers must pay in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end. Buyer is responsible for shipping, however we’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and arrangements. The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end the auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your interest.

Mercedes-Maybach previews longer, more lavish S-Class ahead of debut

Wed, Nov 18 2020

In some international markets, Mercedes-Benz's new 2021 S-Class will get Level 3 semi-autonomous technology, but chauffeur-driven buyers already enjoy full autonomy. It's for these individuals that Mercedes-Maybach, the firm's extra-luxury division, stretched the sedan's wheelbase and gave it an interior worthy of a private jet. Maybach said it developed its variant of the 2021 S-Class specifically for buyers with a chauffeur. It added seven inches to the sedan's wheelbase, and the additional sheet metal benefits those riding in the back. Standard executive rear seats give passengers a comfortable place to work or rest while they're being driven, and the list of new features added to the sedan include massaging calf rests as well as heating for the neck and shoulders. Although we haven't seen Maybach's S-Class yet, a preview image shows the optional two-tone paint — one of the company's hallmarks — and a chromed Maybach emblem. Up front, it will receive a specific grille with vertical slats instead of the horizontal ones worn by the standard S-Class. An additional serving of chrome-look trim will almost certainly further set the Maybach apart, but it will retain its predecessor's relatively subtle design. Specifications won't be announced until the model's unveiling. Mercedes-Benz confirmed it's phasing out V12s, though the big engine could return for one final round under the hood of the S-Class. Alternatively, Maybach may have chosen to surf the downsizing wave still sweeping across the industry by selecting a 4.0-liter V8. Mercedes-Maybach will introduce the 2021 S-Class online on November 19 at 2 p.m. Stuttgart time, which is 8 a.m. in New York City and 5 a.m. in Los Angeles. Deliveries are scheduled to start during the first half of 2021. When it lands, the sedan will join Maybach's variant of the GLS in showrooms across the United States. Related Video:

2019 BMW X7 vs luxury SUV rivals: Comparing specs and photos

Wed, Oct 17 2018

Today we get our first-ever look at the first-ever 2019 BMW X7 crossover. We've actually already had our first-ever drive in an X7 Prototype. And so, we thought it appropriate to follow that up today with the first-ever X7 comparison of specs between BMW's first-ever three-row crossover with legitimate room for seven and its many high-dollar competitors. On paper, the 2019 X7 definitely seems to most closely align with the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Their similar dimensions, interior space, engine choices and price would certainly imply where BMW placed the target when developing X7. We used those same elements to determine three-row vehicles likely to be cross-shopped or that should be cross-shopped. These include the Audi Q7, Land Rover Discovery, Volvo XC90 and Lincoln Navigator. Yes, the latter is a truck-based SUV as opposed to a crossover, but tell that to all the people lining out the door at the local Lincoln emporium. They do not care, and neither shall we. We also included the 2019 BMW X5, which was completely redesigned for this year and therefore not the first-ever. That makes it less appealing? Either way, lining the new X5 up with the SUV that leapfrogs it atop BMW's SUV hierarchy should provide a good idea of just how much more you get by going up a model number. Engines and model lineup Again, the X7 aligns closest with the GLS, offering a base six-cylinder in its xDrive40i model and an upgrade turbo V8 in the xDrive50i. The Mercedes engines have greater output, but the GLS still accelerates slower than the BMW. As the 2019 X5 offers the exact same engines, we would also expect the X7's fuel economy to be superior to the GLS once its estimates are announced. It should be noted, though, that the GLS offers a high-powered AMG model whereas we anticipate the X7 to offer a plug-in hybrid model comparable to the X5 upcoming xDrive45e model. The other luxury SUVs diverge in their engine choices and model lineup. The Audi Q7 offers a base turbocharged four-cylinder, as does the Volvo XC90 in its T5 model, which we left out of the above chart entirely for space reasons. That the Q7 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6 gets the same fuel economy estimates as the four-cylinder is proof positive that engine is purely around for its lower base price.

In Which Mercedes' Sprinter Becomes A Long-Distance Sherpa
In the wintery wilds of northern Alaska, even the cute little critters want to kill you.
As I am about to nod off on my long leg flight from Minneapolis to Anchorage ahead of driving to the Arctic Circle, the friendly twenty-something Alaskan knitting furiously in the seat next to me pauses and says, "When you're driving up there, don't open your windows." In the dead of winter? I hadn't planned on cruising alfresco, but her warning to keep the glazing snugged against the weatherstripping is one I would take to heart. She continues: "If you leave 'em open, a fox is liable to jump right in. There are lots of rabid foxes up there, and they leap into your car and just Go. To. Town." And here I was, thinking that a curious bear or maybe an ill-placed moose in the road was going to be my biggest potential four-legged threat. In the wintery wilds of northern Alaska, even the cute little critters want to kill you.
