This 1959 190SL was owned and maintained by the previous owner for over 25 years before I purchased it two years ago. The car is completely solid. The floors, inner fenders, and chassis have been cleaned and painted body color. I realize this is historically incorrect, but there is not thick undercoating hiding rust or rust repairs like many of the other 190s I have looked at. This car was a solid and clean example before any restoration began. I have over 25 years worth of receipts from my ownership as well as the previous owners for this car.

The motor is in excellent running condition, makes excellent oil pressure (60psi at warm idle, pegs the gauge off idle), and can be driven away with confidence. I do not hesitate to drive this car out to dinner or out to car shows. It performs as it should around town and at highway speeds. The engine has been sorted and tweaked by a well known marque specialist. His contact information is available to serious buyers if you would like to consult with him on his impressions of the car. The M121 engine wears a pair of Weber Carburetors which make for easy starts and reliable performance. The car was also recently fitted with the smaller, lighter, high torque Bosch SR58X starter, installed with the correct factory spacer ring. The generator was freshened by a local specialist at the same time. The car has a correct water pump with servicable bearings installed. I also recently had a correct mechanical fuel pump with external primer handle rebuilt with a fresh diaphgram installed. The ignition system was rebuilt with Bosch components wherever possible.

Many new items have been purchased from my local dealership, the Mercedes Benz Classic Center, and other specialists. Parts include the steering wheel, horn ring, air intake boot, hose clamps, windshield, brake components, fuel hose, and many others. The brake master cylinder as well as all of the wheel cylinders were rebuilt and all brake adjusting fiber washers were replaced with genuine Mercedes Benz parts. Underneath the car, things like tie rods, suspension bushings, and joints have also been replaced. All greaseable points in the suspension have been serviced regularly.

The car includes both tops. The black soft top is in excellent condition. The matching small window hardtop has recently been fitted with a new headliner. The interior of the car is in excellent shape with fresh leather and german square weave carpets.

The car has a couple of blemishes which I have done my best to photograph. In the passenger side rear quarter panel there is a long scratch which has been touched up. In the passenger side lower front fender there is another scratch which has also been touched up. One of the headlight rings has a small ding in it. The passenger side rear bumper over-rider has a dent in it and the plating has flaked, so some corrosion has developed. It could be straightend and rechromed. I have not attempted to repair, repaint, or buff the scratches on the car. They were on the car when I purchased it. When kept clean and waxed they are not very noticable, and a professional may be able to minimize them even further. Also, the rear window rubber seal on the hardtop shows some cracking from age.

This car is in very nice condition mechanically as well as cosmetically. The car has won several trophies at local cars shows during my ownership of the car. The car brings attention, smiles, and starts conversations wherever it goes. This is a car you can drive and enjoy as you continue to make it an even better car.

I have driven and enjoyed this car and look forward to meeting you and discussing the car. I encourage in person viewings of the car. Please read the whole ad before contacting me.

Comparison test: 2019 Acura RDX vs. compact luxury SUV competitors

Fri, Jun 1 2018

Truth be told, if we were to compare the all-new 2019 Acura RDX with those compact luxury crossover SUVs it would most likely be cross-shopped against, you'd be looking at a different list. Even Acura admits that Lexus and Infiniti are the most likely bogies, but with the 2019 RDX, Honda's luxury brand is attempting to attract those customers who think as much with their hearts as with their heads. And for the most part, those folks have been buying from German brands: the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. So, to show how the new RDX compares to them, Acura actually provided examples of each during the recent press drive along with a Volvo XC60. All were determined to have greater emotional appeal than the last RDX, and we would certainly agree. For, as much as the previous-generation RDX made sense on paper, it was really hard to get excited about it. And when you're paying extra for a luxury vehicle, shouldn't you get a little excited? Well, as luck would have it, Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski and I were on hand in Whistler, British Columbia, for the press launch. We didn't have an abundance of time in each RDX competitor, but in conjunction with our usual comparison chart, our impressions should provide a good first taste of how the new RDX compares. Performance and fuel economy Contributing Editor James Riswick: On paper at least, the RDX is gutsier than its comparably powered European rivals. It also weighs the same or less, which logically should mean it'll be the quickest in a straight line. During my brief drives, though, I'm not sure it really stood taller than the three Germans. It at least matches them for smoothness, which is something that can't be said about the Volvo. Fuel economy is lower than them all when you consider all but the Mercedes come standard with all-wheel drive. It's also worth noting that all the competitors are available with engine upgrades, and unless Acura's forthcoming resurrection of Type S models includes the RDX, it should stay that way. Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski: Line 'em all up in a drag race, and I have a feeling the Acura would squirt away to victory. A good bit of that, though, would be due to its 10-speed automatic transmission, which offers a huge spread of ratios and fires off extremely quick shifts. In the real world, I'd guess fuel economy will be similar across the board, so I'm willing to call that category a draw.

World Car Of The Year down to its final four

Wed, 13 Mar 2013

Judges for the World Car of the Year Award have narrowed down the finalists to just four vehicles. Out of a total of 42 entries, only the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT-86 and Volkswagen Golf remain standing. For Volkswagen, this marks the second consecutive year the company has had an entry among the finalists, and the fourth time since 2009. In order to qualify, a vehicle must be on sale on two continents during the span of time between January 1, 2013 and May 30, 2013. A panel of 66 journalists from 23 countries then vote on the finalists.
Three vehicles have made the cut for the last round of voting on the 2013 World Performance Car as well, with the Cayman/Boxster and FR-S/BRZ/GT-86 running against the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. Meanwhile, the Renault Zoe, Tesla Model S and Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid are duking it out for the World Green Car Award. Finally, the World Car Design of the Year Award is up for grabs between the Aston Martin Vanquish, Jaguar F-Type, and the Mazda6. Check out the full press release below. Overall winners will be presented at the 2013 New York Auto Show.

2015 Mexican Grand Prix is a lot like old times

Mon, Nov 2 2015

The last time Formula One visited Mexico, in 1992, 26 cars powered by eight engine manufacturers (counting Honda and Mugen-Honda separately) lined up on the grid; it would have been nine engine makers but the Brabham-Judd cars failed to qualify. In 1992 Lewis Hamilton was seven years old, Sebastian Vettel was five, Max Verstappen was still five years away from being born. Two of the current Sky Sports F1 commentary team, Martin Brundle and Johnny Herbert, were drivers. The starting three were Nigel Mansell on pole – 39 years old, this the year he'd win his only World Championship – and Riccardo Patrese both driving Williams-Renault cars, followed by Michael Schumacher in a Benetton-Ford. Only 13 of the 26 starters would finish. The circuit is has been reworked to today's safer standards, the track surface is brand new and slippery, but the atmosphere and packed grandstands haven't changed. Nico Rosberg was another point of consistency, scoring pole position for the fourth race in a row to beat his now-World-Champion teammate Hamilton by almost two-tenths of a second. The last time Rosberg turned pole position into a victory? The Spanish Grand Prix back in May. Vettel locked up third for Ferrari, followed by the Infiniti Red Bull Racing duo of Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo. Williams went two-up as well, Valtteri Bottas in sixth ahead of Felipe Massa in seventh. Max Verstappen turned in a great late lap to reserve eighth place, Sergio Perez did all he could in front of his home crowd to get ninth, teammate Nico Hulkenberg the caboose in the top ten. In that 1992 race the first three on the grid finished the race in the same order after Mansell dominated, and it was almost the same in 2015. If Rosberg had driven the whole season like he drove today the Driver's World Championship would still be up for grabs. He got a great start and held his line through the first corner, coming out ahead of Hamilton through the initial kinks, pulling away as soon as he got to the straight. Hamilton was never more than a few seconds behind, but every time the Brit inched closer the German found a few more tenths to keep his distance. The field got bunched up when the Safety Car came out on Lap 53 after Vettel spun and got stuck in the barriers, but Rosberg handled the restart perfectly. Both drivers made small mistakes in the last few laps while driving on the edge, but Rosberg earned a strong victory, crossing the line two seconds ahead of his teammate.
