America gets its first McLaren P1 GTR

McLaren won't be making a lot of P1 GTRs. Only 35, to be precise. And most of them will likely remain under the company's care, to be transported to specially organized track days. That means you're not likely to see many of them here in the United States, but one fortunate customer recently took delivery of one such track-bound supercar in Northern California. Decked out in a shade of British Racing Green so deep it looks almost black, with trim in McLaren's signature shade of orange, this particular McLaren P1 GTR was captured while being offloaded from a truck in San Jose a little over a week ago. Given the location, we'd imagine the vehicle belongs to some Silicon Valley billionaire – which only makes sense, considering that it costs a good $3 million or so. But the location also means local fans should soon see it lapping around Sonoma Raceway and Laguna Seca in due course. The GTR is the track-focused counterpart to the road-going P1. It packs the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 hybrid powertrain as the P1, but tuned to deliver nearly 1,000 horsepower, unburdened of excess weight, and fitted with equipment designed specifically for the racing circuit. Like the LaFerrari-based FXX K and the Aston Martin Vulcan, it's designed neither for the road nor for any racing series, but just as a plaything that the uber-wealthy can toy around with on track days. With production of the P1 now complete, the craftsmen at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking are building the last few GTRs before the Ultimate Series of which this car is part closes its books. McLaren to unveil 'latest competition car' at Goodwood Festival of Speed

One of the very best automotive events of the year kicks off next week in England – the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Manufacturers from around the globe will descend on the Earl of March's estate in West Sussex to display their wares, while some of the world's greatest cars will streak up the estate's 1.16-mile Hillclimb Circuit. Goodwood isn't just a place to see high-performance cars run up a driveway, though. Manufacturers often use the the event as a debut location for some of their sauciest road cars and newest racers. This year, that will include McLaren, which has announced that, in addition to demonstration laps from former Formula One World Champion Jenson Button as well as runs in a one-off 650S and P1, an all-new competition vehicle will make its debut. While we were holding out hope for the debut of the P1 GTR, the more likely case indicated by the teaser sketch, shown above, is that we'll see the successor to the 12C GT3 racer, the 650S GT3. Like its predecessor, the 650S GT3 will likely take part in the FIA's GT3 and GT1 championships, alongside the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin and BMW. McLAREN AT GOODWOOD 2014 The arrival of summer in the UK means it's Festival of Speed time again, and McLaren Automotive is gearing up for what promises to be another great weekend of cars and stars at Goodwood. As an official partner of this world-famous annual event, McLaren will have a major presence in Lord March's country park over the course of the weekend and will be following the Festivals theme of 'Addicted to Winning'. We have something particularly special in store – for the first time, we will be unveiling a new model at the Festival as McLaren GT uncover their latest competition race car. Our exhibition stand, which proved such a draw in 2013 as we showcased the then-new McLaren P1™, will once again be a key attraction of the weekend. We will be located to the right of Goodwood House this year, near the TAG Heuer Drivers' Club Walkway, so it's a great place to look out for famous faces. The McLaren 650S will be on display making its Festival of Speed debut having been revealed at the Geneva Motor show in March. The McLaren P1™ will also be present.

Top horsepower-per-dollar cars in 2017

Bang for the buck. That quasi-scientific statistic is bandied about by motor heads everywhere from classrooms to barrooms, though the truth of the matter is that it's exceedingly complex to measure. A fair performance-per-dollar index would include something like cross-referencing MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) with point-to-point times on a track or driving route, which is obviously hard to do comprehensively. But, for the sheer joy of talking about cars and playing with a big spreadsheet, there's always the horsepower-per-dollar index, which is more straightforward, albeit hilariously flawed. There are vagaries even with this simple formula, of course: MSRP for vehicles can change at a moment's notice, to say nothing of the bottom-line shifting that happens with local deals or showroom negotiation. For this list we're running with the straight MSRP wherever possible, and as recently reported as we can get it. All the vehicles on this list are 2017 models, and all trims are reported where the lowest price and differing power levels intersect. Some choices were made for personal preference and some for sanity, avoiding things like all 48 trim levels of the Ford Transit, all with the same horsepower). If this list were a simple top ten, or even a top fifty, you'd be bored to tears with all the red, white and blue that is represented. Following perfectly with conventional wisdom, American cars really do lead the world where hp/$ is concerned. So, for the sake of variety (and the sheer joy of seeing a minivan 'win' one round of this thing) I've sorted out some top five and bottom five lists for broad power categories. Let's dive in. Less Than 100 Horsepower Okay, okay, this is hardly a category we'll grant you. But we've often tried to click off all the sub-100-hp cars on sale in the US, and making this list gave us an excuse. It also illustrates that none of these smallish vehicles bring cheap horsepower to the table - for that you'll need a motorcycle. The segment-leading Chevy Spark (above) asks just over $139 for each hp, and that Smart Fortwo Electric Drive has hp on sale for about the same price as its very distant family cousin, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG (insert your favorite Smart joke here... we know you want to).
