McLaren-Honda drops the bling for stealth F1 livery

Wed, May 6 2015

Watch a Formula One grand prix and you can instantly tell which are the McLarens, visible as they are from a mile away with their reflective chrome livery. But that's all about to change as the British team has dropped the chrome in favor of the more subdued livery you see here. Unveiled in time for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, the new McLaren livery replaces the bling with a gray so dark that it borders on black. The red accents remain, albeit in a revised pattern. The new livery promises to be less reflective at sunset and flood-lit night races especially, while providing more of a visual break from the Mercedes era now that the team is powered once again by Honda. McLaren first adopted the silver and black livery in 1997 after Marlboro (with its white and red livery) left for Ferrari and the West tobacco brand was brought in instead. The team parted company with West after the ban on tobacco advertising in sports was instituted in Europe in 2005, inserted some red into the livery and replaced the flat silver with chrome. This weekend's race will mark the first time in a decade, then, that McLaren will be racing without the chrome. McLaren Special Ops to showcase custom 570S at Pebble Beach

Tue, Aug 11 2015

McLaren will be returning to Pebble Beach this summer to showcase the customization options it offers through its Special Operations division. Though it will exhibit an array of models from its range of supercars, the focus this year will be on the 570S that kicks off the company's new entry-level Sports Series. And it'll be highlighted by the example you see here. This particular 570S coupe has been decked out by MSO in a special Mauvine Blue paint with coordinating interior treatment in black leather. It'll be joined by a second 570S in Ventura Orange with options selected from the MSO Defined catalog. The pair of Sports Series models will give prospective buyers – of which we don't doubt there'll be more than a few in Monterey this month – a couple of ideas as to how they might specify their own. Rounding out Woking's presence at the concours will be a pair of limited-edition models from the next-step-up Super Series. There'll be a 650S Le Mans edition in Sarthe Grey and a 675LT, but neither will be available for sale as McLaren has already sold out the entire production runs of both, limited to 50 and 500 examples, respectively. To highlight its heritage, the company will also be showcasing a 1996 McLaren F1 GTR – specifically #17R in star-spangled FINA livery – on loan from BMW North America. Collectors looking to take something tasty home with them will also want to check out the concurrent RM Sotheby's sale, where a Volcano Red P1 will be offered alongside a '98 F1 with LM upgrades. The bespoke division of McLaren will showcase some of the individualisation options it will make available on the forthcoming new 570S Coupe, the first model to join the McLaren Sports Series. Two examples have been created. The first 570S Coupe 'by MSO' features the uniquely formulated Mauvine Blue paint finish coupled with a bespoke interior finished in Carbon Black leather with co-ordinating detailing, carried through from the exterior colour. A second 570S Coupe, finished in Ventura Orange and fitted with a selection of styling details from the MSO Defined range of options, will take up position on the popular Concept Lawn at the event.

McLaren Special Operations showing limited-edition 650S at Goodwood

Fri, Jun 27 2014

When things get under way at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, McLaren will be among the automakers revealing new metal. The F1-team-turned-automaker is expected to reveal the GT3 racing version of the new 650S, but will also have a new special edition of the same to show off to prospective buyers and supercar enthusiasts alike. Previewed in concept form just a couple of months ago, the 650S by McLaren Special Operations offers a number of upgrades over the existing supercar. Supervised by Woking's design director Frank Stephenson, the MSO 650S features satin-finish carbon-fiber exterior components, a three-piece rear bumper, a more aggressive rear diffuser, 10-spoke lightweight diamond-cut alloys and an interior decked out in black leather, Alcantara, glossy trim and more satin-finish carbon. Buyers will be able to choose between coupe and Spider in one of three special metallic paint finishes: Agrigan Black (with a ruby red flake) as previewed on the concept, Papaya Spark that reinterprets McLaren's signature orange and the above-pictured Sarigan Quartz silver with "a subtle gold infusion." Regardless of the color or body style, however, only 50 examples of the MSO 650S will be offered, starting at GBP252,500 in fixed-roof form. That represents a premium of more than GBP50,000 ($85k) over the stock 650S, for an approximate US sticker of $350,000. McLAREN SPECIAL OPERATIONS CONFIRMS BESPOKE 650S MODEL TO PREMIERE AT GOODWOOD - Bespoke design inspired by the recent MSO Concept with design collaboration with McLaren Automotive Design Director, Frank Stephenson - Just 50 examples to be available globally - MSO 650S Spider to debut in the Supercar Paddock and on the Hill run at the Goodwood Festival of Speed McLaren Special Operations (MSO) has confirmed production plans for a run of bespoke examples of the McLaren 650S following the strong reaction to the MSO 650S Coupe Concept shown in China earlier this year. Just 50 examples of the MSO 650S will be available globally, available in either a Coupe or Spider bodystyle. The production car will make its global debut, in Spider form, at this summer's Goodwood Festival of Speed in the Supercar Paddock, and will be seen in action taking part in the famous Hill run. The bespoke McLaren Special Operations division was launched in 2011, and offers a full personalisation service for McLaren owners.
