2015 Brazilian Grand Prix is the same as it ever was

Mon, Nov 16 2015

At this point, we hope Nico Rosberg is planning to carry his current qualifying form into the 2016 season and back it up with the same kind of race-day cojones he showed winning the race in Mexico City two weeks ago. The Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver got it right enough again on Saturday afternoon to take his fifth consecutive pole position ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton by almost a tenth of a second. It's the same one-two from Brazil last year. The bad news for the rest of the field is that the winner in Brazil the last seven years has been one of the two drivers on the front row. Last year it was the Williams duo that lined up behind Mercedes, this year it's Ferrari. Sebastian Vettel plays the stalking horse, securing third in his Ferrari ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen in fourth. Williams driver Valtteri Bottas actually qualified in fourth, but he had to serve a three-spot grid penalty for passing under red flags in Free Practice 2, so he started sixth. That promoted Sahara Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg up to fifth. Daniil Kvyat was the quickest representative from Infiniti Red Bull Racing, getting into seventh even with a Renault power unit that's weak on some of the key stretches at the Interlagos track. Felipe Massa had the second Williams in eighth, in front of the second Red Bull driven by Daniel Ricciardo in ninth. Toro Rosso hasn't confirmed its drivers for next year but Max Verstappen keeps making it hard to look elsewhere, taking 10th. Rosberg is working nearly the same trick he pulled last year: drive like a second driver for most of the year, drive like a world champion for the last quarter of a season. He pulled away at the start and covered Hamilton just enough on the run to the first corner to keep Hamilton on the outside. By the end of Turn 1 the German had the lead and didn't give it up for the rest of the race outside of pit stops. Without overwhelming pace to pass and unable to follow closely, Hamilton could do nothing except ask his team for a different strategy to go for the win. When Mercedes told him "No," trying to protect Rosberg's second place in the championship ahead of Vettel, that was the race. Just like last year, Rosberg and Hamilton finished one-two. Vettel, Raikkonen, Bottas, Hulkenberg, and Kvyat drove lonely races to finish in positions three through seven.

2017 McLaren 570GT takes a more balanced approach to speed

Tue, Mar 1 2016

You can divide performance cars thusly – there are some you could commute in everyday and there are some you can't. Most McLarens fall into the latter category, including the 570S, 650S, and 675LT. While we can salute that commitment to fun, the reality is that McLaren's rivals all sell cars in the former category. That's where the new 570GT comes into play. It takes the 570S formula and broadens its appeal, maintaining the base car's output – 562 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque from a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 – but softening the suspension, fitting more equipment, and quieting down the exhaust. In fact, it's this pursuit of quiet that's perhaps the biggest sign that McLaren is willing to change the nature of the 570. Aside from the exhaust, the company has ditched the carbon-ceramic brakes (which can squeal awfully) in favor of quieter steel stoppers. And instead super-grippy tires, there's a set of Pirellis that cut up to three decibels of cabin noise. View 14 Photos It's a versatile thing, too. There's a total of 12.3 cubic feet of cargo space, thanks to a new luggage cover over the mid-mounted engine. And getting to that cargo area is made easier by the revised rear hatch, which swings open rather than lifts up. These are all very, very good things. It's good for the customer because McLaren will actually sell them a car you can use comfortably and without concern every single day. It's good for McLaren because the 570GT commands a $14,000 premium over the standard 570S. And it's good for fans of the brand, because it's proof that McLaren understands there needs to be more than pure performance in its products. With the 570GT, it can still wow its driver in that tiny fraction of mileage spent on the track or a winding road, but we're betting its owners will end up putting a lot more miles on overall. You can check out our full range of photos from the 570GT's big debut in Geneva at the top of the page.

Seat bringing boatload of hot hatches to Lake Worthersee

Thu, 17 May 2012

GTI Treffen may have started out as a gathering for owners of Volkswagen pocket rockets, but by now it's blown into a full-on celebration of everything related to hot hatches and more. And though it remains a grassroots event by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, Volkswagen is wise not to ignore it. These days, it comes to the annual lakeside gathering in Austria with a handful of show cars in tow, and brings its sister-brands along for the ride, too.
Audi has already announced the Q3 Red Track concept destined for Wörthersee, and Skoda is coming with a pair of Citigo concepts - one made up as a DJ booth and the other as a rally car. Now their Spanish cousins at Seat have revealed the veritable motorcade of show cars it's bringing to the meet-up.
Seat will be showcasing the Ibiza Cupra Concept it unveiled in Beijing, but that's not all. It'll also display a customized Ibiza FR and Leon Cupra R, a Mii city car (that's the Spanish version of the Volkswagen Up!) imagined in sporty FR trim and, most enticing of all, a pair of racing models that are ready to hit the track.
