UPDATE: McLaren 720S is spotted on the street already
Tue, Mar 14 2017UPDATE: We got an answer late Tuesday about the mystery 720S. McLaren's North American press contact let us know that the car is a prototype undergoing final engineering signoff. It will be here in the US only for a few weeks. Meanwhile, the engineers apparently decided to take in a hockey game. PREVIOUS STORY APPEARS BELOW: The McLaren 720S was just introduced at the Geneva Motor Show last week. Over the weekend, it - or something like it - was spotted in Raleigh, NC, outside a Carolina Hurricanes hockey game. So is it, or isn't it, the 212-mph British supercar? Redditor MyNameIsBUNS posted this image just days after the car's Geneva reveal. It sure looks like a 720S, and Autoblog Editor-in-Chief Mike Austin, who saw the car in Geneva, is certain this is the real deal. So how did it get on the road so fast? And why North Carolina? Though the price of a McLaren 720S is just shy of $300,000, that's within reach of an NHL player - based on salaries, it could belong to anyone on the Hurricanes roster. A bigger pool of potential owners would be tech-industry execs in the Raleigh Durham Triangle. One Redditor who commented on the photo said he recognized it as a press car. We doubt that, but if so, we at Autoblog are going to have to get on McLaren's signup sheet. More likely, the car belongs to the manufacturer. Meanwhile, McLaren is already offering customized versions of the 720S. If you'd like to waste a little time at work, have fun building your own supercar with the McLaren 720S configurator. McLaren 650S to start at $265,500 in US?
Thu, Mar 20 2014As the McLaren 650S inches towards US dealerships, one of the big questions on our mind is how much the mid-engined supercar will cost. We previously reported that European customers would be shelling out 232,500 Euros, which at the time was the equivalent of $318,000 (today, it's about $320,200). In that piece, we claimed US pricing would probably be well below that number, and thanks to some supposedly leaked intel, it looks like we were correct. DragTimes claims the hardtop 650S will start at $265,500, which actually strikes us as a bit of a bargain for a 641-horsepower, mid-engined super car. It should be noted that the list of optional extras, which is what will really drive up the price of the 650S, doesn't differ from the European options sheet we showed you back in February. That means there's a load of carbon-fiber trim pieces as well as plenty of performance options, like "super-lightweight" forged wheels, a carbon-fiber racing seat and a sport exhaust. Now, all this being said, we'd suggest taking these prices with a grain of salt. The European price leaks were accompanied by a physical price sheet that lent an air of credibility to the initial report - there's no such proof for these prices. We've reached out to McLaren to try and get confirmation on these, and we'll be sure to update this post as soon as we hear anything. Until then, head over to DragTimes for the full rundown, and let us know what you think in Comments. Is $265K a reasonable start price for a 650S? Which options from the price list would be must-haves? Have your say below. Watch a skateboarder smash a McLaren's windshield
Thu, Jul 21 2016A skateboarder in Colorado took his revenge on the driver of a McLaren by using his board to shatter the $250,000 car's windshield. YouTube user Paul Gonzo was filming the exceedingly long line at Denver's popular Little Man Ice Cream when the attack occurred. An orange McLaren 570S rolled through a stop sign and into a cross walk, pushing down a skateboarder attempting to cross. The driver then added insult to injury by honking at the young man. Off camera, there's a quick pop, followed by the young man running down the street with his board under his arm. The McLaren's passenger ran after the skater, who left a huge gash in the middle of the supercar's windshield. The driver simply closed the passenger side door and took off down another street. Many people thought the skateboarder was in the right, according to CBS4 Denver. Denver police told CBS they have seen the video, but nothing illegal has happened since neither party reported the incident. The McLaren is owned by a car rental company. It's unknown who was driving the car during the attack. The video of the event is currently going viral, with over 4.1 million views as of this writing.
