Meet the carbon-fiber F1 racer that started it all

We take it for granted that Formula One racing cars are made from carbon fiber. But that wasn't always the case, of course. And as with any revolution, this one had to start somewhere. Enter the McLaren MP4/1. It was the very first F1 car built around a carbon-fiber monocoque, introduced at a time when every other team was still using aluminum. McLaren introduced the original MP4 after merging (at Marlboro's behest) with the Project 4 team, bringing its chief Ron Dennis on board to call the shots. The design made its debut in 1981, winning the British Grand Prix at Silverstone that year and serving as the basis for the team's design for the next three years. Niki Lauda won two grands prix behind the wheel of the subsequent MP4B. But more importantly, the carbon-fiber MP4 changed the face not only of racing, but of supercar design to follow. Little wonder then that McLaren hasn't made a race or road car since that hasn't been based around a carbon monocoque chassis, from the prototypical MP4/1 to today's MP4-31, and from the legendary McLaren F1 road car to the latest 570S. McLaren Automotive is reporting strong growth, as its sales volume almost doubled during the previous year; from 1,654 sold cars in 2015 to 3,286 cars in 2016. To keep that upward trajectory a reality, the company is aiming to overhaul its powertrain technology with help from BMW Group along with other strategic partners. In a statement of intent published today, McLaren is announcing a project to develop "new combustion technology that will produce a higher output per capacity than currently possible", while still achieving reduced CO2 output. A McLaren spokesperson told Autoblog that reduced emissions is also a goal of the combustion improvements. We expect to see the results of this effort sometime around 2020. The McLaren-led project is backed and partially funded by the UK Government, through the Advanced Propulsion Centre. The APC is a think tank formed in 2013, itself standing as a 10-year joint effort between the UK Government and the automotive industry. There are five other partners in addition to McLaren, including McLaren's engine-manufacturing partner Ricardo. BMW Group and casting experts Grainger & Worrall, which also produce parts for Aston Martin DB11 engines, are also in the list. Then there is Lentus Composites with their material know-how, and the University of Bath, who will be utilized for their advanced R&D capabilities. The project is sure to boost the existing credibility of the middle of England as an advanced automotive technology powerhouse, and it will be interesting to see which kind of power figures the end products will churn out – and in what kind of bodies the high-tech engines will be mounted. McLaren reveals 675LT concept with JVCKenwood tech at CES

McLaren and Japanese electronics giant JVCKenwood are drawing on a quarter-century of collaboration with this technological concept at CES this year. It's based on the limited-edition 675LT, but packs more advanced tech. For starters, it has a head-up display that projects vital information right into the driver's line of sight – including the presence of other vehicles in its vicinity through the on-board Advanced Driver Assistance System. To go with it, McLaren replaced the steering wheel with that of the P1 GTR, and fitted controls for the HUD where the IPAS boost and DRS adaptive rear wing buttons would be. While they were at it, McLaren and JVCKenwood also pulled out all the mirrors and replaced them with digital cameras. There's one on each door to streamline the side mirrors, and another digital rear view mirror inside feeding from a third camera below the Airbrake rear wing. If only such systems were certified for use on the road. The one-off concept also features a unique treatment inside and out. It's done up in Onyx Black with silver racing stripes outside. And the interior features a mix of leather and technical fabrics. With the air conditioning system deleted, vital controls moved to the steering wheel, and gauges integrated into the HUD, McLaren also removed the center console and instrument binnacle altogether, giving the cockpit a more airy feel. The finished product looks pretty cool, but even without all the cool tech, the 675LT is all sold out in both coupe and Spyder forms. The 675LT Coupe, which recently went into production at the start-of-the-art McLaren Production Centre in Woking, England, is the most driver-focused, lightweight and aerodynamically optimized model in the McLaren Super Series family. Strictly limited to 500 units, all sold out within a matter of months.
