McLaren won't offer 540C in United States
Thu, May 28 2015McLaren launched its new entry-level Sports Series in New York with the 570S, and followed up in Shanghai with the more affordable 540C. However we can now confirm that the 540C won't be offered in the United States. In correspondence with Autoblog (and following rampant speculation circulating the Internet), McLaren spokesman Wayne Bruce confirmed: "Following a series of previews in which interest from American customers has been exclusively in the 570S, we will now concentrate on only this model for the launch of Sports Series in the US to satisfy demand." That means the 570S will remain (for the time being at least) the most affordable model – if a term has ever been more relative – McLaren will offer in the US, priced at $184,900. We can also expect additional versions of the Sports Series to follow, including a roadster and a third bodystyle as well. The cheaper 540C won't be kept out of North America altogether, though: it will be offered in Canada. North of the Border, the 540C is priced at $196,500 Canadian (equivalent to about $158k at current exchange rates), with the 570S going for $219,750 Canadian (~$177k). Related Video:
McLaren 650S will hit 124 mph in 8.4 seconds
Thu, Feb 27 2014Sometimes an automaker reveals a car, in full, and that's the whole story. But sometimes things get dragged out a bit. The McLaren 650S falls in the latter category, which strikes us as a bit odd considering that it's essentially a massaged version of the existing MP4-12C. No matter, the news here remains impressive all the same. The British racing team turned supercar constructor first announced the arrival of the 650S two weeks ago. A few days later, the first images and video footage leaked out. McLaren quickly released initial details and official photos the next day, but withheld certain information – key details like pricing, and, you know... how fast it can actually go. We still haven't seen the thing in person – that will come next week when the car is unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show – but now McLaren has released official performance stats for its new supercar (along with a trio of new snapshots). So just how quick is it? Well, for starters, it'll run the 0-62 mph sprint in three seconds flat and trip the quarter-mile lights in 10.5 seconds before topping out at 207 miles per hour. That's rather quick no matter how you slice it, but for context, McLaren points us to the car's 0-124 mph time, and how that compares to other cars it's made. At 8.4 seconds, it takes the 650S half a second less to reach that speed than the 12C upon which it's based – that means it's a full second quicker than the legendary McLaren F1. And that's no mean feat considering that, even twenty years later, McLaren's first road car is still the yardstick against which all other supercars are measured. Scope out the rest of the impressive stats in the press release below. PERFORMANCE FIGURES ANNOUNCED FOR THE McLAREN 650S AHEAD OF GENEVA DEBUT Feb 27, 2014 - New McLaren 650S Coupe can accelerate 0-200km/h (0-124mph) in just 8.4 seconds - Faster than rival 'stripped out' road racers, yet offers far superior comfort, refinement and equipment - Available in Coupe and Spider variants from launch As the first example of the McLaren 650S rolled off the line at the state-of-the-art McLaren Production Centre in Woking, McLaren Automotive has released performance numbers and confirmed pricing ahead of the global debut at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show. The latest addition to the McLaren range accelerates to 100km/h (62mph) from rest in just 3.0 seconds, and can reach 200km/h (124mph) in just 8.4 seconds.
A McLaren MP4-12C Spider fails to fit through this French hotel's doors
Fri, Sep 16 2016Making a proper entrance at Grand Hyatt Cannes Hotel Martinez, an upscale hotel on the southern coast of France, is important. You can't simply arrive like every other commoner. How will others know how much better and important you are than them? No, your entrance must be spectacular. Something that people won't soon forget. Like crashing your $270,000 McLaren MP4-12C through the revolving front door. People will surely notice when you plow your 618 horsepower supercar through the too-narrow front entrance. Sure, according to France's Nice-Matin it's been done before, but it hasn't happened for a few years. There's been plenty of time for people to forget. Plus, the hotel manager Alessandro Cresta seems surprisingly calm about the situation, saying "It is common for the customer to confuse the forward and reverse gears in an automatic transmission." True enough. Once the deed is done, let the hotel deal with it. You're too important and too busy to deal with towing, insurance, or a replacement. No one is hurt and the hotel seems to have a contingency for such a situation. They've already started to board off the revolving door. Rental? Not for the likes of you. Simply go down the street and buy another. The new Ferrari 488 Spider looks like it may scoot through the entrance slightly better than the McLaren. You may even make it all the way the front desk. Now that would be an entrance. Related Video: News Source: Nice-MatinImage Credit: Nice-Matin Humor McLaren Convertible Supercars
