McLaren launches 650S Le Mans edition, Sports Series to offer 4 variants

Tue, Jan 20 2015

Even before you take other model lines into consideration, Porsche has done quite a job broadening its 911 range with an ever-expanding array of variants – from different engines and transmissions to distinct body styles. Little wonder, then, that its rivals are working to emulate the same model. Just the other day, we brought you news that Mercedes is planning to follow a similar formula with its 911-baiting AMG GT, and now it seems McLaren is preparing to go the same route as well. As we reported back in March, the upcoming McLaren Sport Series – which will take on the upper end of the 911 family – will be offered in multiple body styles. Just how many, exactly, we still don't know for sure, but Holland's Autovisie reports that the baby Mac will spawn "at least four variants" – which could explain the "Series" part of the nameplate. The first version we're expecting to see in New York will likely be the standard coupe. That will be followed by a Spider version just like there's been of the 12C and 650S. But those won't be the end of the story. This past June, reports suggested that McLaren was planning a GT version with an "unconventional trunk." Autovisie now reports that it'll encompass a luggage compartment fitted over the engine and accessible from the side, making the prospect of driving Woking's smallest every day a more realistic one – relatively speaking, that is. This could take the form of the Shooting Brake rumored to be in the works years ago. But what about the fourth variant, you asked? That could come down to a GTR model. McLaren has already announced that it's bringing the track-bound P1 GTR to the Geneva Motor Show, and just the other day we reported on the possibility of a 650 GTR that would essentially fill in for the previous 12C Can-Am edition. A similar hard-core treatment could feasibly be applied to the Sports Series as well, whether bound to the track or open to use on public roads as well. The proliferation of variants wouldn't be without precedent for Working, after all. The original McLaren F1 bred GTR and LM versions, though they were almost too rare to count. The SLR it built for Mercedes spawned more derivatives than we would dare count. The MP4-12C gave us a few as well. And the 650S has already appeared in coupe, Spider, 625C and soon GTR versions. So the idea of the company's upcoming entry-level model following the same path would only make sense.

Formula 1 seeking independent engine supplier

Mon, Oct 26 2015

Formula 1 could get a new engine supplier in the near future, if Bernie Ecclestone and the independent teams gets their way. According to Autosport, the FIA is soon to open the contract up for bids, and there are already several manufacturers that have expressed interest. Currently Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, and Honda supply engines – both to their own premier teams (Red Bull and McLaren for the latter two) but also to other teams like Williams, Sauber, and Toro Rosso. Because the new turbocharged V6 hybrid power units cost those four suppliers so much to develop, they're charging their customer teams big bucks – around $20-30 million per season – to provide the engines. These costs are much higher than the $10 million or so it used to cost to purchase a V8 engine under the previous regulations. Ecclestone figures it's time to bring in another supplier who will not run their own team and not play favorites, but will supply engines to private teams at a lower cost. There are already a number of potential suppliers under consideration. One of them is said to be Cosworth, which has a long history in the series stretching back to 1963. The British firm stepped back between 2007 and 2009, returned in 2010, and dropped out again after 2013. The development could be of particular benefit to Red Bull, which has been unable to find an engine supplier and could be forced out of the series as a result. The team has long been powered by Renault, but that relationship has grown sour. And the other three engine manufacturers have not been forthcoming in offering an alternative arrangement for the team. McLaren opening four new dealerships in America

Sun, Jan 24 2016

McLaren is opening four new dealerships in the United States. The addition of the new locations bring the company's North American presence up to 22 showrooms, and its global dealer network up to 80. And they're opening just in time for the arrival of the manufacturer's new and (relatively) more accessible Sports Series. The new dealerships are located in Boston, Houston, Palm Beach, and Bergen County, NJ. McLaren Boston will open as part of the Village Automotive Group, adjacent to its existing Audi and Porsche showrooms on Pond Street in Norwell, MA. McLaren Houston will be a stand-alone showroom being opened by Park Place, a network principally centered around the Dallas area with dealerships selling exotic machinery from the likes of Bentley, Bugatti, Lotus, Maserati, Porsche, and Rolls-Royce. McLaren Palm Beach will join the Myers Auto Group alongside its Jaguar, Land Rover, and Aston Martin franchises on South Dixie Highway. And finally McLaren Bergen County will form part of the Prestige Family of Fine Cars, with its Lamborghini, Jaguar, and other brands currently located in Paramus while the new showroom is built in Ramsey, NJ. These join the existing locations in Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Calabasas (LA), Chicago, Dallas, Long Island, Miami, Newport Beach, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Tampa Bay, as well as Rancho Mirage, CA, Scottsdale, AZ, Greenwich, CT, and Washington, DC. Vancouver and Toronto have McLaren dealers as well, as does Mexico City (though that's counted together with the showroom in Chile in the Latin America region). By comparison, Aston Martin has 37 dealers in the United States (and five in Canada). Lamborghini has 31 in the US (plus four in Canada) out of its 130+ worldwide. And Ferrari has 38 in the US (and five in Canada) out of its approximately 200 locations around the world. The expansion of McLaren's dealer network coincides with the arrival of the new Sports Series - represented here by the 570S – which promises to open a whole new market segment for the British automaker. Priced below anything Ferrari or Lamborghini can offer, the 570S takes aim at the Audi R8 and Porsche 911 Turbo. Its launch stands to increase McLaren's sales drastically in the coming years: last year the company delivered a record 1,654, but with the introduction of the Sports Series, it aims to increase that number to 4,000 annually by the end of next year.
