McLaren and Red Bull refused to accept elimination qualifying compromise

Sat, Mar 26 2016

Formula 1's failure to change its under-fire elimination qualifying format was sealed when McLaren and Red Bull refused to accept anything other than ditching the shoot-out idea completely, Motorsport.com has learned. In another dramatic twist to the saga surrounding F1's qualifying system, sources have confirmed that the two outfits were unwilling to play ball with an alternative solution that had been put on the table by the FIA this week. And without their support - and the need for unanimous backing for any change to go through - the idea to tweak elimination qualifying was left dead in the water, with no time left to do anything other than keep the system that proved so unpopular in Australia. FIA plan After the shambolic end to Q3 in Australia, teams had unanimously agreed in Melbourne to ditch elimination qualifying and go back to last year's system for the next race in Bahrain. However, a decision was made by the FIA to not go that far and abandon the positive aspects of the change. Instead it wanted to give the shoot-out system another try, albeit in an improved format. This week therefore, teams on the Strategy Group and F1 Commission found themselves only able to vote on a revised format to elimination qualifying proposed by the FIA, where the new-style Q1 and Q2 would be extended, and Q3 would revert to how it was last year. One theory as to why teams were only given this option to vote on was that it would effectively force their hands to accept it, as they would be highly unlikely to reject it and keep the Australian system that was so universally criticised. However, if that was a motivation for not giving teams the option of going back to last year's system, then it failed entirely because McLaren and Red Bull refused to support it and did not vote in favour. Without their support, the vote did not go through, meaning that F1 is heading to Bahrain with the same under-fire elimination qualifying format that was run in Australia – and little prospect of it delivering a better show in Q3 this time. F1 criticism In a week when the GPDA spoke out about F1's 'obsolete' rules structure, and the sport making a bold move away from free-to-air TV in Britain, the inability of F1 to get rid of a hated qualifying format has left it facing further criticism.

McLaren Special Ops to showcase custom 570S at Pebble Beach

Tue, Aug 11 2015

McLaren will be returning to Pebble Beach this summer to showcase the customization options it offers through its Special Operations division. Though it will exhibit an array of models from its range of supercars, the focus this year will be on the 570S that kicks off the company's new entry-level Sports Series. And it'll be highlighted by the example you see here. This particular 570S coupe has been decked out by MSO in a special Mauvine Blue paint with coordinating interior treatment in black leather. It'll be joined by a second 570S in Ventura Orange with options selected from the MSO Defined catalog. The pair of Sports Series models will give prospective buyers – of which we don't doubt there'll be more than a few in Monterey this month – a couple of ideas as to how they might specify their own. Rounding out Woking's presence at the concours will be a pair of limited-edition models from the next-step-up Super Series. There'll be a 650S Le Mans edition in Sarthe Grey and a 675LT, but neither will be available for sale as McLaren has already sold out the entire production runs of both, limited to 50 and 500 examples, respectively. To highlight its heritage, the company will also be showcasing a 1996 McLaren F1 GTR – specifically #17R in star-spangled FINA livery – on loan from BMW North America. Collectors looking to take something tasty home with them will also want to check out the concurrent RM Sotheby's sale, where a Volcano Red P1 will be offered alongside a '98 F1 with LM upgrades. Related Video: McLAREN SPECIAL OPERATIONS RETURNS TO PEBBLE BEACH WITH ONE-OFF 570S Four years on from its global launch, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) will return to the manicured lawns of the USA's famous Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance later this month with a selection of distinctive and beautiful commissions. The bespoke division of McLaren will showcase some of the individualisation options it will make available on the forthcoming new 570S Coupe, the first model to join the McLaren Sports Series. Two examples have been created. The first 570S Coupe 'by MSO' features the uniquely formulated Mauvine Blue paint finish coupled with a bespoke interior finished in Carbon Black leather with co-ordinating detailing, carried through from the exterior colour. A second 570S Coupe, finished in Ventura Orange and fitted with a selection of styling details from the MSO Defined range of options, will take up position on the popular Concept Lawn at the event.

McLaren MP4-X concept shows innovation won't die in F1's future [w/video]

Fri, Dec 4 2015

Despite things like turbocharging and kinetic-energy recovery, today's Formula One cars look more or less like the ones that lapped the world's race tracks 20 years ago. Sure, they're much more aero intensive, but the basic look is the same. McLaren, which probably had some serious free time this season considering its misfortunes, has imagined a futuristic F1 car that adopts many innovative and somewhat controversial additions. It's called the McLaren MP4-X, and the most obvious change is the closed cockpit. The death of Jules Bianchi, the accidents involving Maria De Villota and Felipe Massa, and even the death of Ayrton Senna could have all potentially been avoided by adopting a strong closed-cockpit design, like the one advocated here by McLaren. It's also worth pointing out that this design is a boon for aerodynamics. Inside that cockpit, drivers would enjoy an augmented reality display system, sort of like that used by F-35 Lightning II fighter pilots. There'd also be an independent head-up display that McLaren claims could be used to transmit info about race position and flag status. So basically, the kind of data you'd get playing Forza Motorsport or Gran Turismo. Speaking of safety, the MP4-X's entire chassis, beyond the closed roof, would be far safer thanks to the use of "negative-stiffness material structures." Essentially, these materials can soak up the force of an impact and then bounce, for lack of a better term, back into shape. And if you're thinking like we are, this sounds like McLaren wants 900-horsepower bumper cars. Of course, 900 hp is speculation on our end. McLaren is deliberately vague on the powertrain of this concept. Advanced hybrid powertrains aren't surprising, although the team's mention of inductive, wireless charging on tracks sounds like the stuff of Formula E's dreams. In a move that McLaren says "tears up the rulebook," the MP4-X would see a return of ground effects. The underbody would feature enormous venturi tunnels to suck the car to the track. Alongside active aerodynamics that tweak the its shape for turns and straights, this concept McLaren would be both more slippery and offer more downforce than today's cars. There's a lot more on the MP4-X concept than we can talk about here, so head over to McLaren Honda's official website for all the nitty gritty details on this car's advanced systems, including solar cells, advanced tire sensors, and even virtual logos. It all sounds very, very cool.
