McLaren 650S Sprint is ready to hit the track running in Monterey

Sun, Aug 17 2014

McLaren isn't exactly the most plebeian brand to begin with, so it makes sense for the company to take advantage of the lavish parties and wealthy folks descending on California for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. In addition to the insane P1 GTR, McLaren is showing off the track-focused 650S Sprint here in Monterey. This new 650S it takes the place of the 12C Sprint in the brand's lineup, and should be the fastest 650S short of the GT3 racer. The thing is, the Sprint isn't technically a homologated racer, but it makes a great toy to show off at track days. For the Sprint, the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 stays put, but McLaren optimizes the 650S' body for more downforce and better engine cooling. It also packs all sorts of track goodies like a competition fuel tank, larger radiator, racing-tuned suspension and 19-inch center-lock wheels. It also has all of the safety necessities for a day of doing laps like a roll cage, fire suppression and racing buckets. Of course, you might have known about all of that already, since the British brand revealed the Sprint just a few days ago, but you can check it live our gallery from Monterey.

McLaren F1 GTR Longtail sells at Gooding for $5.28 million

Sun, Jan 19 2014

Last month we reported on a very rare McLaren being put up for auction under the auspices of Gooding & Company. One of only 106 examples of the McLaren F1 ever made, one of only 28 made in GTR competition spec, and one of just ten longtail versions, chassis number 021R won FIA GT Championship races in Germany and Finland, making it one of the most successful F1 GTRs ever campaigned and earning its place in the pantheon of McLaren lore. With original livery in immaculate condition, this rare McLaren F1 GTR Longtail sold this weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona, for $5.28 million. Which may seem like a lot of money – and by any account, it surely is – but comes in at the low end of the pre-sale estimates that placed its value at between $5 and $7 million. To put that into proper McLaren perspective, consider that the same amount could buy you a full grid of ten 12C Can-Ams, five examples of the new McLaren P1, or probably get McLaren to build you your own custom creation like the X1. Check out the live images from the scene in the gallery above. Watch the McLaren P1 LM break Goodwood FoS roadcar record

Thu, Jun 30 2016

The McLaren P1 LM and driver Kenny Brack have snapped the road-legal car record at the Goodwood hill climb like a twig. And, of course, it's all on video. Brack ran the hill in a scant 47.07 seconds in the ultimate street-legal version of the P1, a GTR converted for road use. Goodwood has run road cars up the hill since 2000, but timed runs only started in 2014. That year Jann Mardenborough managed 49.27 seconds in a Time Attack-spec Nissan GT-R Nismo. The P1 is even a hair faster than a pre-production BAC Mono that ran last year and recorded an unofficial 47.9-second run. But Brack's record-breaking run didn't come easy. Just watch the video. The McLaren oversteers in the first bend, and then looks more like a bucking bronco than a hypercar as it runs up the track. Brack stretches out an ever-increasing lead through each section of the track before crossing the line seconds ahead of any other road-legal vehicle's time.
