McLaren Special Ops cooks up a devilish P1
Thu, Jun 11 2015When you're paying a million bucks for a supercar, you earn the right to get it just the way you want. And this is how one British customer opted to have his (or hers) spec'd out. Outfitted by McLaren Special Operations, this particular McLaren P1 has been done up in a rather devilish black and red livery reminiscent of the scheme that the company's Formula One team is running on its single-seaters this season. The mostly black bodywork, as you can see, is accented by red nostrils, red fading into black along the fenders and doors, a red-framed roof, red aero, and red-accented black wheels. The theme continues on the inside, with glossy red inserts and contrasting red stitching adorning the black leather and bare carbon-fiber trim. It's certainly not for the faint of heart, but then a 900-horsepower hybrid hypercar seldom is.
McLaren 570S Track Pack removes 55 pounds just to add them back at 150 mph
Wed, Nov 30 2016Though the McLaren 570S is plenty sporty as-is, the British supercar builder decided there was room for improvement. That improvement comes by way of a new Track Pack option for the sports car. The meat of the upgrade are a gaggle of lighter parts to go along with a new rear wing. Inside, leather upholstery is swapped for Alcantara, and the standard buckets are replaced with carbon fiber racing-style units. Combined with lighter wheels, the package reduces the 570S's weight by 55 pounds. The new rear wing, exclusive to the 570S, nullifies the weight gain, and then some, once up to supercar-level speeds. The wing is 12 mm taller than the stock example, and produces an extra 64 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour. The other performance-oriented goody included in the package is the McLaren Track Telemetry system. This app records lap times, sector time splits, and logs data for analysis of your performance. Because McLaren knows owners will want people to see that they have the most hardcore 570S available, the company made a couple of visual tweaks, too. The roof is painted in what McLaren calls "Dark Palladium" and the exhaust and wheels are given a "stealth-finish." Based on the photos, this seems to be a fancy way of saying "satin black." The Track Pack is now available for ordering and delivery in 2017. The package isn't cheap at a price of GBP16,500, or $20,595 at current exchange rates. But look at it this way. The extra grams from those dollars in your wallet were slowing you down on the track. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. McLaren 650S leaks out ahead of Geneva reveal [w/video]
Sun, Feb 16 2014Late last week, McLaren announced it will be bringing a new model to the Geneva Motor Show. Called the 650S, it's set to slot in between the 12C and P1 in Woking's supercar range. But before McLaren gets to unveil the new model, the first batch of photos – as well as a video walkaround – have leaked online. What we seem to be looking at is an MP4-12C with revised styling to more closely resemble the P1. Which is a good thing, because to most eyes, the P1 is a far better-looking car than the 12C, whose appearance – finalized before design director Frank Stephenson arrived on the scene – has oft been derided as derivative. The 650S also features an updated interior, but best of all, it's said to pack more power: the name hints at a 650 metric horsepower (641 hp) output from what we can assume to be the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that powers the 12C (which currently offers 616 hp) and the P1 (727 hp before the 176 hp electric motor comes into play). What remains to be seen at this point is whether the 650S you see here will eventually replace the 12C or continue alongside it indefinitely. The prevailing wisdom seems to be that McLaren will offer both and see how sales pan out. Scope it out in the (unfortunately grainy and low-res) leaked image gallery above and the walkaround video below, and watch this space for the official reveal.
