Watch a McLaren P1 get tormented by a BAC Mono at Silverstone

Could there be anything more infuriating than making a million-plus-dollar investment in a vehicle like the McLaren P1, only to take it to a track and find you're unable to outrun a car that costs, without options, about 96,000 pounds ($159,000 at today's rates)? One P1 driver experienced that sort of frustration while running Silverstone, when he tangled with a very persistent BAC Mono driver. Now, the P1 absolutely decimates the single-seat, closed-wheel track toy on the straights, while losing a lot of ground in the bends. Even on a high-speed track like Silverstone, the McLaren doesn't boast enough of an advantage to keep the Mono at bay. As the intelligent YouTube commenters (yes, we're surprised by this too) point out, though, there could be a number of reasons why the Mono is so able to hassle and pass the P1. First, it's quite clear that the BAC driver knows the circuit far better than the McLaren pilot, as evidenced by his lines, particularly through Stowe and the Club/Vale complex (this could be chalked up, as one commenter says, to the lead car driving with his mirrors). The BAC is probably running a more aggressive tire than the P1, which in turn appears to be handicapping itself by not running its most aggressive aero setup. Finally, remember that the McLaren is a fully street-legal vehicle, full of safety gear and crash-worthiness as required by law. Still, the fact that this relatively affordable track toy is able to hound and pass one of the world's premier performance machines is a particularly impressive feat. McLaren honors Alain Prost with special P1 at Goodwood

McLaren is speeding off from Woking to Goodwood this year with an array of supercars specially outfitted by McLaren Special Operations. Each pays tribute to a legendary figure from the team's distinguished history. The assortment will include a number of different models from the company's lineup, but the key player featured here is based on the flagship McLaren P1. Done up in a white livery with blue and red details, this particular hybrid hypercar takes a decidedly different approach to the sinister red and black on the last one we saw. It borrows its livery from the iconic helmet design of Alain Prost, the world-famous French driver who won three of his four world championships driving for McLaren. (His fourth and final title was with Williams, in case you were wondering.) The Prost-inspired P1 will be joined by a 675LT that similarly borrows its livery from the Can-Am legend Denny Hulme's helmet design in white with twin black stripes and yellow headlamp lenses. Also on hand will be an orange 650S Spider in tribute to Bruce McLaren himself. The new 570S will be making its dynamic debut at the Festival of Speed, and there'll also be a P1 GTR and 650S Le Mans edition on site. History buffs, however, will likely be more intrigued by the silver F1 GT, one of only three road cars ever made to homologate the F1 GTR Longtail for racing. The bespoke arm of McLaren Automotive has prepared models from the Sports Series, Super Series and Ultimate Series, the three newly-announced model tiers. Each of these celebrate this year's Festival of Speed 'Flat-out and Fearless' theme, highlighting a milestone or 'moment' from the history of McLaren, and honouring some of the legendary drivers who have driven for the team over the years.

McLaren 570S GT and Spider on the way

McLaren confirmed to Autoblog on July 26 that it would launch a convertible version of the 570S in 2016. With it known that another bodystyle for the range is coming in 2017, one that McLaren wouldn't divulge, the question is: What we can expect in two years? Autocar reports that it will be a GT. We go back to the realm of rumor when it comes to how the transformation will be carried out. Autocar says it will be "an all-new bodystyle" that will offer more storage with "minor styling changes." If that's the case, it would quash the past year of rumblings that seemed to sketch out a shooting brake. A GT bodystyle has been scuttlebutt ever since last year, when the 570S was still called the P13, speculation at that time being that it would have "an unconventional trunk" behind the passenger compartment. Car and Driver gossip that came from a McLaren source, said the final car "looks more like an E-type than the Jaguar F-type does," with new cooling measures and a concave rear window. Another report earlier this year said that the luggage area can be accessed from the side. None of those rumors are compatible with "minor styling changes," so we'll find out which ones are true. Back to Autocar, the mag says the GT has "long-distance touring in mind," so the interior gets gussied up, too. Power will come from the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 that's done sterling work in the rest of the range, the 562 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque not expected to budge. If differentials are comparable to the 650S range, the 570S Spider will weigh about 90 pounds more and cost about $15,000 more in the US than the coupe. Performance should be comparable with its hardtop brother. Now the question is: what's the rumored fourth bodystyle for the 570S?
