McLaren offers a fully electric P1 roadster for $486

Mon, Sep 26 2016

Tesla doesn't need to worry that McLaren is suddenly getting into the pure-electric game with the P1 supercar. That's because this electric P1 is a new toy for kids between the ages of three and six. This is not the Little Tykes Cozy Coupe of your childhood. This is a pretty cool toy. It features the "dihedral" butterfly doors featured on all modern McLarens. It also comes with an electric motor coupled to a three-speed transmission that even has reverse. This toy P1 also offers desirable features not available on the full-size model, including a center seating position and an open roof. Drivers will even have access to an on-board MP3 player and speaker system. The car goes on sale at select McLaren stores and toy stores at the end of October, and it can be purchased in any color you want so long as it's Volcano Yellow. Pricing has been set at GBP375, which at current exchange rates is about $486. So if you must have an electric, drop-top P1, there's really only one option. Oregonians use supercar collection to make sick children smile

Wed, Dec 10 2014

Portland, Oregon couple Eric Peterson and his wife Amity own ten exotic cars and, said Amity, they "didn't want the cars to sit." Instead of the random track day or regular trips to Cars 'n' Coffee, they started a project called Dream Drives for Kids, which brings ill youngsters to the Peterson garage and takes them for a ride in the car of their choice. The couple aims to take a new kid for a ride every week. Portland's KGW news covered the project while a four-year-old named Gideon, who has a rare childhood melanoma, stopped by for a jaunt in a McLaren MP4-12C. And Gideon's a champ in his own right: the kid likes cars so much he would take Hot Wheels to other sick children in the ward, and he gave the Petersons a box of Hot Wheels gift sets to give to other children when they come for rides. You can watch the heartwarming segment in the video above. News Source: Eric Peterson via YouTube, Motor Authority McLaren Coupe Luxury Performance charity portland

McLaren Sports Series rumored to produce 'well over' 500 horsepower

Fri, Jan 2 2015

McLaren uses a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 in its two current cars, and that engine will feature in its third, entry-level car, too. It registers 727 horsepower in the P1, 641 hp in the 650S, and, while it's only speculation for the moment, Autocar reports that the coming McLaren Sports Series will be tuned to make "well over" 500 horsepower. Company CEO Mike Flewitt told the magazine, "Like our other models, this one will have a higher power-to-weight ratio and better performance figures than any rival." Starting price for the Sports Series – which will almost certainly get a more formal alphanumeric name –could come in around 130,000 pounds in the UK (circa $200k USD including British taxes), making it a 65-thousand-pound discount compared to the 650S. But with its overall size and weight expected to come close to the more expensive coupe, the Sports Series will go without the active aerodynamics and trick suspension of its elder sibling in order to create a performance gap. The report also says that since McLaren expects a much higher instance of use as a daily driver, a different door operation and thinner sill will make ingress and egress easier. To make sure it stands out in a growing field of race-tested competitors, McLaren will launch a GT3 model, but it will go the other way, too, with a turismo version "aimed at long-distance touring." If it does have 550 horsepower, how will the 130,000-pound coupe stack up on paper against its UK competitors? It will be more expensive than all of them, but also more powerful, and unless McLaren loses the plot, it will likely be more surgical around a track than any of them, as well. The 520-hp Porsche 911 Turbo costs 120,598 pounds, the 542-hp Audi R8 V10 Plus costs 114,835 pounds, and the 510-horsepower Mercedes AMG GT costs 109,160 pounds. We'll know where the Sports Series stacks up when its unveiled at the New York Auto Show.
