Road-legal McLaren P1 GTR in the works

Sun, Apr 26 2015

When the McLaren F1 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans on its first try, it was the car run by Lanzante Motorsport that took the victory. The English firm has maintained a two-decade relationship with McLaren, often through work on the F1, and it will now turn its attention to the P1 GTR by making the 986-horsepower track-only supercar road-legal for certain customers. What needs to be done for the conversion, how long it takes, and the specs of the finished product will be determined by where in the world the owner plans to use the car, so Lanzante is taking each order "on a case-by-case basis." But the company has said that the finished product will always maintain its positioning compared to the currently road-legal P1, by being more powerful, faster, and having more aggressive aerodynamics. The first donor car should hit the operating lift later this year. McLaren isn't officially involved in the project, but speculation is that the Woking carmaker and its MSO division will be there to assist in order to make sure all goes well.

Seat announces five-door Mii city car

Wed, 08 Feb 2012

We knew at its unveiling in Frankfurt that the debut of the production version of the Volkswagen Up! was only the beginning, what with all the concept versions Volkswagen showcased over the years. But that was only the tip of the proverbial iceberg. VW isn't the only brand in the group that will offer the little city car, and its sister marques are eager to follow suit.
So after Volkswagen debuted the Up!, Skoda unveiled the Citigo and Seat showcased the Mii - all versions of the same vehicle, but with slightly modified sheetmetal and different nameplates. But those were only the three-door versions. Now that Volkswagen has confirmed the five-door Up! and Skoda the five-door Citigo, Seat is taking its turn with the five-door Mii.
The similarities between the Mii, Citigo and Up are, of course, greater than the differences. But at the end of the day, the variety gives European buyers a greater range of choices when buying their new city car, even if similar exercises on this side of the Atlantic - Plymouth, Mercury, Pontiac, Oldsmobile...we're looking at you - have long since disappeared.

McLaren P1 GTR hits the track with its spiritual ancestor [w/poll]

Wed, Feb 25 2015

Unless you're one of the squillionaires who'll be taking part in its custom-tailored track program, chances are slim that you'll ever see the new McLaren P1 GTR ripping around a racing circuit. Chances are even slimmer that you'd see it running in tandem with the legendary, Le Mans-conquering McLaren F1 GTR from which it takes its inspiration. Fortunately, the British racing team turned exotic automaker has released footage of exactly that, with both track-tuned supercars decked out in the same yellow and green livery. The new GTR, in case you missed the news, is a new track version of the McLaren P1 hybrid hypercar. It's lighter than the road-going version and packs more power (along with a series of other upgrades) to make this one of the most extreme machines Woking has ever offered to private customers. Whether it's faster than the F1 GTR, however, is another question – and one which we'd pay good money to see answered, or better yet, answer ourselves. In the meantime we're looking forward to seeing McLaren take the wraps off its new track machine at the Geneva show.
