McLaren's entry-level P13 will be called Sports Series
Thu, Nov 6 2014McLaren is dropping its alphanumeric model-naming scheme when it comes to its upcoming model to slot into the bottom of the brand's supercar lineup. Unlike the 650S or P1, the vehicle previously known as the P13, is now rechristened with an actual title as the Sport Series. The announcement comes in conjunction with a somewhat bizarre new teaser video that compares the future supercar to a black swan. It's the, "symbol of a moment that challenges beliefs and turns thinking upside down," according to the clip. That seems like a pretty big promise, but McLaren also confirms that the Sports Series is primed for a global unveiling in the second quarter of 2015 with a carbon-fiber chassis and mid-mounted V8. Hard facts about the supercar haven't been easy to come by. Company spokesperson Wayne Bruce confirmed to Autoblog this year that the price would be "around two thirds of what a 12C would cost you today." Multiple body styles have also been suggested, including a coupe, convertible and possibly even a larger GT version. Earlier rumors also indicated that the turbocharged V8 might be detuned down to around 450 horsepower, compared to 641 hp from the 650S. The switch to using a real name for the model rather than a mix of numbers and letters certainly signals it as something different from the rest of the brand. Scroll down to read the McLaren's announcement and check out its rather weird teaser clip. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. 1997 McLaren F1 GT Longtail extends itself to Geneva
Tue, Mar 3 2015McLaren arrived in Geneva this year with not one, but two new variants of its superlative supercars: the track-bound P1 GTR and the new 675LT. But lest you forget that the latter is not the first long-tailed model to roll out of Woking, it also brought along an example of the original. The long-tailed McLaren F1 GT – and no, we're not missing an R at the end – was developed as a homologation special so that McLaren could field similarly extended F1 GTRs on the racing circuit. Only three examples were ever made: 54F1GT currently resides in Brunei. 58F1GT lives in Japan. But the final one – bearing the designation 56XPGT – was kept by the factory. That's the one you're looking at here, resplendent in dark metallic green and making a rare appearance at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. 18 McLaren F1s gather for owners club meet in Tuscany
Mon, Jun 2 2014It's not every day that you see a McLaren F1 on the road. Seeing two in the same place is the approximate automotive equivalent to seeing a leprechaun riding a unicorn. But eighteen? We were recently at the McLaren factory in Woking, and while there were a few notable examples on display or hidden in this corner or that, we still didn't see that many of them there. That's what makes this video so remarkable. Shot in Tuscany during a meeting of the McLaren F1 Owners Club, this video shows a dozen "standard" F1s, joined by an additional six F1 GTRs. Together that makes for one in every six McLaren F1s ever made. And as if that weren't enough, a couple of new P1s joined in, with a few examples of the 12C and 650S tagging along in a – get this – support capacity. Now you know it's a special event when you've got McLarens serving as support cars. Scope out the footage below. This content is hosted by a third party.
