McLaren profits could quadruple on strength of P1

McLaren has had success on the track for the last 50 years, but its recent move into also building road cars full time is paying big dividends. The British automaker says that it expects revenue to double this year and pre-tax profit on deliveries to be four-times higher, thanks in no small part to selling out of its million-dollar P1. "It's the main year in which we deliver McLaren P1s. You can expect quite a strong impact on our turnover and profits," said McLaren Chief Financial Officer Paul Buddin to Bloomberg. The business announced in November 2013 that it had sold the entire 375-car production run of the P1 sooner than it had originally planned. Since launching the MP4-12C, McLaren has made it no secret that it wants to keep its product fresh by launching a new model each year. It initially followed the 12C coupe with the 12C Spider and P1, and this year, it has the 650S, while the 12C is reportedly being phased out. Next year's introduction is expected to be the Porsche-fighting P13. P14 and P15 models, plus a more powerful 650S, are rumored to be even farther down the track. In just a few years of building production cars, McLaren has shown that it can already construct a vehicle with world-class performance. Its next step is growing the company's sales further. It hopes to move around 4,500 units annually in the next two or three years. With over a hundred grand prix wins in its history, the team is showing it's got a good shot at translating racing victory into financial success. McLaren confirms Sport Series Spider for 2017, another bodystyle due [w/poll]

While famous in motorsports and for the F1, McLaren is still building a name for as a major producer of modern supercars. Every year, the company just keeps adding more variants to the lineup, and now we're getting the scoop on some of the coming developments. In a recent latest financial announcement, McLaren tips its hand that two, new bodystyles for the Sports Series models are on the way for 2016 and 2017. Currently comprised of the 570S (pictured above) and 540C coupes, the Sports Series models are meant to challenge rivals like the Mercedes-AMG GT and Audi R8. Adding a convertible to the range isn't really a surprise, but now McLaren is verifying that's the case. "I can tell you that the new bodystyle for 2017 will be a Spider," spokesperson Wayne Bruce confirms to Autoblog. However, McLaren is clear in its announcement: "a second body-style will be introduced in 2016 followed by another in 2017." So what could next year's model be? Rumors suggest that the company might be working on an odd combination of GT and shooting brake for the Sports Series. While it isn't confirmed, leaks claim that the variant has a larger luggage compartment that runs on top of and possibly behind the engine, and this is somehow accessible from the side. Maybe the shape looks better in reality, than the description implies. Of course, that's not the only option. It's not hard to imagine McLaren doing a hardcore version of the 570S, like the relationship between the 675LT and 650S. Although for all we know right now, the company could even have a hyper hatch or tiny pickup to take on Australia's high-performance utes in the works. It's certainly fun to speculate. McLaren P1 crashed by 27-year-old driver a day after he bought it

There's one fewer McLaren P1 spitting fire on the world's roads after a 27-year-old driver wrecked his $1.15-million supercar in Dallas, TX, just a day after he picked it up from a local luxury car dealer. According to KHOU local news, police were responding to the crash site by 7:41 AM the next day. The 903-horsepower P1 allegedly hit a wet patch of road and spun, slamming the car into a guardrail. Judging by a photo obtained by KHOU, the hit did serious damage to the back of the supercar and bent the driver's side rear wheel into the body. The McLaren was the only vehicle involved in the crash, though, and the shunt sent both the driver and a 24-year-old passenger to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
