Modified 1985 Mazda Rx7 on 2040-cars
Winter Park, Florida, United States
The reason a first generation Rx7 was chosen for resto-modification was
simply because it's one of the last Japanese rear wheel drive sports
cars still available today that can match or better the performance of
the many newer cars being offered. For example, there's the Scion FR-S and
Subaru's BRZ, the Older Rx-7 performance numbers weren't really
competitive when compared to these examples right out of the box, but
with minor modifications it became capable of outperforming or matching
them and at a fraction of the cost. With huge aftermarket support
from available from companies like Racing Beat and Mazdatrix increasing
the performance levels wasn't that hard of a task. These companies have
specialized in increasing performance out of rotaries for decades. I
was lucky enough to find an unmolested,one-owner car with low miles out
of California that showed no signs of rust or abuse. It even had the
original bill of sale and the owners manual in the glove box. Another
big plus was that it was a GS model, which meant it was equipped with the
more reliable 12A rotary and weighed less than the more powerful GSL-SE
model by at least 200lbs! It was the perfect starting point. To become
competitive in the modern sport cars market the braking and handling
was to be improved. This was accomplished by installing the bigger more
powerful braking system out of the high Performance model(GSL-SE)
which added rear ventilated disc Brakes and LSD (limited slip)along with
thicker sway bars and a more useable wheel bolt pattern. Another
Notable upgrade was the installation of stiffer springs and shocks and
the replacement of all worn out rubbers and endlinks, including motor
mounts. Once all component were installed a better wheel and tire setup
was chosen, authentic Volk Racing TE37's and BF Goodrich Comp2
tires. This combo really increased traction and gave it a more aggressive
stance. It now seemed like the car begged to be driven harder from the
second you get behind the wheel and turn the key. With the handling and
braking improved, it was time to focus on power and reliability.
Starting with a complete tune-up and changing the hoses, belts, and
fluids. Servicing the A/C and replacing the oil pan gasket. Then I
installed a Racing Beats Header and exhaust system combo and dropped in
a K&N air Filter over the factory Carburetor. I didn't de-smog the
engine because the car came from California and I didn't want the new
owner having any issues with emissions. Once completed the difference
in performance and sound was huge.Giving it similar performance of the
larger fuel injected Motor(13b) provides and while shedding additional
weight. (About 35 ILBS). With the car running strong I then moved on to
improving comfort and curb appeal and removed and replaced all rubber
seals and trim pieces to have the car Painted Matte Red. As for comfort
the seats were replaced with new leather seats and the original radio
and speakers replaced with newer and better sounding components that
provided modern touches like Bluetooth Connectivity without bogging the
vehicle down with unwanted weight. I drove the car for two months daily
searching for weak points needing improving. I came across a minor
issue with night time visibility and addressed that problem by upgrading
the headlights with modern Led Projector units. This car is lots of fun and its seems like I'm always looking for a reason to get behind the wheel
and drive. I hope the car
finds a new owner deserving of the work and effort I've invested into
making this classic fun again.

Here's what you had to say about the Tokyo Motor Show
Fri, Oct 27 2017We obsessively covered the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. You, our readers, provided the color commentary. Read on and, of course, leave your comments below. Subaru Viziv Performance Concept: Remember the WRX concept they showed in 2013, and what the production version looked like in 2015? Pepperidge Farm remembers. wooootles 2 foot high wing on the trunk or gtfo :) sc0rch3d Mazda Kai Concept : Dear Honda, this is how you dynamically style a hatchback. Thank you. Dfelix70 Kudos to KODO design. There are so many things I love about this "Kai" car: the awesome split panoramic sunroof, the Jaguar-esque tails (sporting an "eyebrow up"... ala The Rock), a sleek family resemblance to the already beautiful CX-5 and CX-9. Seems suspiciously close to being a production ready Mazda3 — save for a few fanciful bits (door handles, mirrors etc). If it doesn't get too watered down by the time it hits the streets ... take my money! Randy Ross Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept: As an 06 IX and 12 X owner, this is so upsetting. I will never buy this or care to give it another look. Hope you are glad you killed my favorite track-ready car to produce this electric junk. AcidTonic Picture the GT-R going away for a few years and coming back as an SUV. This is ridiculous. Surely someone in marketing could've came up with another cool name. Evo The Evo sedan is dead, whether this exists or not. I don't mind. Lada1200 Honda Sports EV Concept : I sure would like to see this "less is more" design aesthetic spread to their gas-powered production line. RustyShackleford Love it. I see glimpses of late 1970 Scirocco with Honda flair. Gintonics I just want ONE question answered in the affirmative, and that is... "RWD?" Henadenk AND A FEW FROM FACEBOOK: Toyota's press conference: Wake me up when they talk about the Supra. David Levinson Yamaha Cross Hub Concept: All I can think is modern day Brat, which has its own kind of charm. I'm assuming that it's a unibody design, but it seems happy to be its own thing rather than that crossover pretending to be a pickup called the Ridgeline. Would definitely take the Yamaha over the Honda, although I doubt it'll come to the states. Cole Henry Mazda Vision Coupe Concept: Face: KIA K7, Tail: Aston martin. Harold Shin A bit British, no? Mazda expands scope of vehicles affected by Takata airbag recall to 330k
Fri, Dec 12 2014Earlier this week a Reuters report indicated that Mazda was considering a nationwide expansion of its recall for vehicles equipped with Takata airbag inflators. The company has now confirmed said expansion, with the vehicle count jumping from 86,770 to 330,000 affected in the US. As before, the affected vehicles are Mazda6 and RX-8 cars from the 2004 to 2008 model years. Mazda reports that Takata has tested a "large number of inflators removed from Mazda vehicles" and not found any to be "non-compliant" as of yet. With that said, the company also reports in its statement that one 2005 Mazda6, located in Florida, has been identified as having had an "abnormal" deployment of the driver's side airbag. For what it's worth, though the company's statement references the Takata inflator issue as a proper recall, it is calling its own program of notification a "Safety Improvement Campaign" for the moment. Find the full, if brief, Mazda press release in the form below. UPDATED MAZDA STATEMENT REGARDING TAKATA AIRBAGS Dec 11, 2014 WASHINGTON, DC (December 11, 2014) – In addition to the actions announced on December 4, 2014, as discussed in a separate document, Mazda today announced the following steps in the Takata recall: Mazda will institute a nationwide Safety Improvement Campaign of 2004-2008 model-year Mazda6 and RX-8 models equipped with certain Takata airbag inflators. The nationwide Safety Improvement Campaign will cover the driver's-side airbag inflator, as Mazda has not made a safety defect determination at this time. This action will support us to gather additional parts for examination and to promote customer satisfaction and safety. There are approximately 330,000 vehicles included in this Safety Improvement Campaign in the United States So far, Takata has tested a large number of inflators removed from Mazda vehicles, and NONE have been found to be non-compliant at this time One vehicle – a 2005 Mazda6 located in Florida – has been identified as having experienced an abnormal driver's-side airbag deployment. Mazda has worked closely with NHTSA on this situation Mazda will participate in the independent, industry-wide joint testing program for Takata airbag inflators For history, on December 4, 2014, Mazda announced: It would expand the area of the high-temperature, high-humidity region recall to include the Gulf Coast states.
Mazda recalling 18k Mazda6 and RX-8 models over airbag inflators
Fri, 25 Jul 2014Faulty Takata airbag inflators keep taking their toll on automakers. Mazda is the latest to be affected in the US by announcing a recall covering 18,050 Mazda6 and RX-8 models to replace the front, passenger-side airbags. Specifically, the campaign covers 18,000 Mazda6 units from the 2003 and 2004 model years built between May 29, 2002, and March 4, 2004, and 50 RX-8 vehicles from the 2004 model year made between June 25, 2003, and June 30, 2003.
As with the rest of the vehicles with these faulty inflators, it's possible for the part to rupture when deploying the airbag and potentially spray shrapnel at the occupant. Mazda's defect notice goes into a bit more detail than most about the problem saying: "some propellant wafers have been produced with an inadequate compaction force, or may have been exposed to uncontrolled moisture conditions (those wafers could have absorbed moisture beyond the allowable limits)."
This isn't Mazda's first difficulty with Takata-supplied airbags this year. The company was among the seven automakers that recalled vehicles in hot-weather states over the inflators. It also had to recently fix 42,000 Mazda6 vehicles in China over the issue.
