I originally bought this 93 RX7 in October of 2012 with the intention of working on it over time to turn it into a track car, but as life would have it I have had little free time and haven’t touched it since I bought the car.

I bought the car from its previous owner in Northern California with a 120k on the chassis and (an unconfirmed) 50k on the powertrain. I test drove the car and found that it drove well and looked nice in person so I bought it and had it shipped to Phoenix, Arizona (where I live and where the car is located now). Since the shipping company dropped off the car it wasnt running, but it turned out to be a loose ground on the starter motor which has since been fixed. I have not driven the car in over a year, but it starts up and settles down into a nice idle after a minute or so.

I am not sure what engine swap kit was used or what donor car the LS1 was harvested from. The car has a clean car fax with no accidents.

Here is a list of known issues:

1. The body is in overall good condition, but there are paint chips along both front fenderwells (see pictuers), as well as a couple poorly repaired scratches on the driver’s side fender. Also, the driver’s side headlight cover is a different shade of red than the rest of the car. Driver's side exterior door handle doesn't open the door when it is locked, which is a well known issue with the FD chassis RX7. Also, fuel door sometimes sticks.

2. Electrical: this is the one area where I think the car needs the most attention. Just from looking under the dash, the wiring isn’t labeled and the connections were done with taps and splices. The car would really benefit from a new harness (as can be purchased from Jordan Innovations). The car currently has no radio or A/C. During my test drive, the speedo was not working as car needs dakota digital signal converter.

3. The interior panels are in good condition. The original seats are not included; instead there are momo seats and steering wheel, as well as a roll bar which has been bolted in. I have the interior panels stored and bagged, and these will be included with the car (I removed these interior panels to inspect the condition of the body of the car).

4. Suspension: car is on D-1 drift spec coilovers with no apparent issues

5. Wheels/tires: XXR 527’s are brand new, tires are Falken RT-615’s with >50%  treadlife left

6. The car currently is running, but hasn't been driven in over a year.

My honest estimation is that with some attention to the electrical system and TLC to the details, this car can be a very nice LS swapped RX7. I am not in a rush to sell nor do I need to sell, but it makes little sense to hold on to the car when it is just gathering dust.

Please note the following:
-I will not be replying to any offers of cars in trade; I am looking only for an outright sale.
-I have the clear title in hand. I will sign title over to the new owner once car is paid for in full.
-Buyers who have demonstrated the ability to afford the car through a cash statement or pre-qualified loan letter are welcome to inspect the car in person in Phoenix, AZ.
-Buyer to arrange and pay for the cost of shipping.

Alfa Romeo takes Spider in-house, Mazda-Fiat roadster partnership not dead

Sat, Dec 20 2014

It's officially off. Following a report in March of this year that the marriage of Mazda and Alfa Romeo to produce a MX-5-based Spider was in trouble, the Italians have confirmed that it will take development in-house. "As far as the Spider goes, the final version is of course no longer the two-seater FCA co-developed with Mazda but a derivative of Project Giorgio," Maserati and Alfa Romeo brand boss Harald Wester told Car. For those not in the know, Project Giorgio is Alfa's codename for the rear-drive platform that will underpin the next-generation Spider, not to mention the replacement for the 159 sedan and a few other products. All is not lost for the Japanese-Italian partnership, though. "The Far East import will probably find a new home with Fiat-Abarth," Wester told Car. Yes, you read that correctly, Mazda is still working with FCA, and the result will eventually end up with Abarth's scorpion badge. If anything, we're more excited over this news than the idea of an Alfa MX-5. But we want to know what you think – would you rather Alfa build a new Spider on the Miata's bones, or does an MX-5 Abarth sound like more fun? Have your say in Comments.

Mazda keeping non-hybrid, non-electric Skyactiv strategy

Tue, Mar 29 2016

Mazda still thinks that it can buck the trend of adding those fancy batteries and electric motors to its cars. At least for a little while longer. Hopefully. Speaking to Auto Express recently, Mazda's European boss, Jeff Guyton, said that he expects his company's cars to be able to get a lot more efficient without resorting to any of that fancy electrification stuff. "I think there's at least 20-30 percent better fuel economy by the end of the decade," he said. He said that he expected to get to Europe's low target of 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer, "without any significant deployment of electrical drive." This part is all in line with Mazda's long-term Skyactiv strategy, as laid out back in 2011 and first mentioned publicly in 2010. Remember, this is the company that once proudly proclaimed, "Not Electric. Not Hybrid. Not A Drag To Drive." As explained back in 2011, Mazda hopes to wait until other automakers have done all of the heavy lifting on developing plug-in and hybrid tech so that when Mazda enters the market, things will be cheaper. Of course, Mazda has been quietly testing all-electric vehicles and Guyton said that there may be an Mazda EV at some point. "We are interested in electric technology and it will be in the distant future when it will be quite important," he told AE. "But we think it will take some time to be commercially attractive without tax payer-funded incentives." How much of a delay? Well, there is a gas-electric Mazda 3 hybrid available in Japan that uses some powertrain parts from the Toyota Prius, and we all know that the Prius has been around for ages. Maybe in 2025, Mazda will come out with a Leaf-based Mazda 2. Related Video: Green Mazda Fuel Efficiency Electric Hybrid skyactiv mazda skyactiv

MotorWeek checks out two sides of the '90s Japanese car scene

Sat, Feb 6 2016

MotorWeek's Retro Reviews let you feel nostalgic about a huge range of classic cars, and the latest two releases offer a look at two very different sides of the Japanese car market in the 1990s. The video above shows off tuned examples of the Mazda RX-7 and Nissan 300ZX. Check out the clip below to remember the 1997 Honda CR-V, if you want to reminisce about something a little more utilitarian. The RX-7 and 300ZX were among the era's best Japanese sports cars, and these examples' suspension and engine overhauls gave them an extra boost. Peter Farrel Supercars tunes the Mazda, and the vibrant yellow paint and body kit make it look ready for an episode of Initial D. The updated powertrain stands up to the mean styling and gets the RX-7 to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. The Stillen 300ZX GTZ sports a giant wing, and new turbos take the output to 465 hp. It sprints to 60 in 4.9 seconds. The CR-V sits on the opposite end of the automotive spectrum as the tuned RX-7 and 300ZX, but it's even more important in a historical sense. The Honda (along with the Toyota RAV4 and others) was among the progenitors of today's mega-popular compact crossovers. These early examples set the foundation for offering buyers a utilitarian vehicle in a comfortable package with good fuel economy at an affordable price. The CR-V had some quirky charm, too, like the removable picnic table hidden in the cargo floor. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences.
