Reason for Selling: I have found that I'm the type of enthusiast that really enjoys building cars and driving them for a short time before getting interested in another project. I have since put a deposit down for an 818 (kit car) from factory five racing.
The swap was performed by PTuning in Manassas, VA using Hinson swap parts (subframe, trans mount, torque arm, cooling system, etc.). The torque arm has since been removed and replaced with Samberg differential mount, which is a much better design. The previous owner owned the car for around 8 years and just used the car as a cruiser.
Engine:
-LS1 engine and T-56 6-speed transmission from 2002 firebird
-LS6 intake manifold
-Hinson longtube headers 1 7/8" collectors
-Hinson Subframe – powdercoated black
-High flow cats x2 (1 on each side)
-Apexi shotgun style catback – Any rx7 catback exhaust system will fit with the positioning of the hinson headers.
-Setrab 25 row oil cooler in passenger front ducting
-Oil thermostat set for 185*
-Canton 3 qt Accusump with electronic psi regulator – below 35 psi oil pressure the accusump will send oil to the engine and above 40 psi the accusump will regain and maintain pressurized oil reserves. System has a hard switch to turn it off for street driving.
-Improved Racing oil pan baffle
-Oil: Amsoil 5w-40
-Transmission: Mobile 1 synthetic ATF
-Differential: Mobile 1 75w-90
-Fluids changed within 500 miles
Suspension:
-Quantum Motorsports coilovers - not adjustable and not overly stiff for street driving
-New Pillowball bushings x6 (less than 500 miles)
-New powerflex bushings: Rear upper/lower control arms, Front upper/lower control arms, and Sway bar mounts.
-Nylon differential bushings
-New improved racing rear sway bar endlinks
-New Mazda front sway bar endlinks
-Samberg differential mount
Brakes:
-Calipers all painted red – Front calipers have white "Mazda".
-New open slot rotor rings on front racing brake 2-piece rotors
-Slotted rear discs
-Stainless brake lines all around
-Motul 600rbf flushed within 500 miles
-Front and Rear brake pads are street pads with lots of life left.
Body:
-99 Spec Front Bumper
-New OEM lip
-Mazdaspeed replica side skirts
-Replica Rear Diffuser
-New OEM Front Splash Gaurds.
-Rear wiper has been deleted
-Antenna has been shaved
Paint:
-Car painted Ferrari Red for 2004 color code – During paint all windows/trim were removed as well as the engine.
-Car has been detailed by myself with no expenses or time spared and it shows.
Wheels:
-BBS RGR Wheels –
-Front 17x8.5 with 245/40/17 Dunlop Star Specs with a lot of tread left
-Rear 17x9.5 with 265/40/17 Dunlop Star Specs with an equal amount of tread left
-No curb rash on the wheels. They're in mint condition and have been sealed inside/out periodically with Klasse AIO to keep them protected.
-No signs of camber wear on tires. Alignment specs were mild for street driving with only -1* camber, 0 toe for prolonged tire life.
Interior:
-Authentic Bride Gias Sport Seats – Has the correct tags and certificates of authenticity. I ordered these from Ravspec.
-Authentic Bride Rails – sliding and adjustable
-Berber floor mats specific to the car – very high quality
-Prosport oil temp, coolant temp, and oil pressure gauges in triple dash pod from prosport.
-Kenwood Headunit with USB and aux port
-5x7 Speakers – Rockford Phosgate
The car has been to Summit Point Main 2x – once in November of 2012 and once at Hyperfest 2013 in June 2013. Both times the car performed beautifully without any off track incidents, temperature issues, or anything else out of the ordinary. Before the car ever went on track the necessary precautions were taken to make sure the car would remain reliable and happy. I am currently in HPDE2, which means I'm still learning how to drive. At this point I don't have the skills or desire to push the car to its limits. See below for modifications specifically made for track driving.
Track Upgrades:
-All fluids were changed before both track days. The improved racing oil pan baffle, accusump, and oil cooler are all recommended modifications before tracking an LS engine. While tracking the car oil pressures have remained constant and oil temps peaked at 220* on an 80* day while running for 25 minute sessions.
FAQ:
Does everything work as it should on the car?
-The only gauge (stock or aftermarket) that doesn’t work is the OEM oil pressure gauge. It probably could be returned to working status. However, I never hunted down why it wasn’t working since I bought the car.
-Yes, the car does have working a/c. Tends to struggle a bit on really hot and humid days. But anytime it’s below 90* the car stays cool.
-The heat does not work. I never had a problem driving the car during winter without heat. Although I wasn’t driving the car in anything other than sunny.
-Power windows, locks, etc. all work.
-Radio feature does not work due to the shaved antenna. I did purchase an antenna designed to be stashed under the dash. However, I haven’t installed it. The rest of the headunit works flawlessly.
The Bad: There is no such thing as a perfect car
-There is an ~1 inch crack in the bottom of the front bumper – it lines up perfectly so is only seen when there is pressure on the front bumper like when you’re washing it.
-The interior plastics around the cockpit (gauge surround, shifter surround etc.) are starting to show some age. Cheapest solution would be to wrap them with a flat black. Or you could have a body shop skim them with filler and then paint them with something glossy.
-There is a small 1" hole in the leather shift boot. A redlinegoods shift boot would solve that problem.
-I've found that the interior passenger door handle is loose. This is common with these cars. An aftermarket replacement from SakeBomb Garage would fix this 100%.
Overall:
-The car is a pleasure to drive. It performs flawlessly on the track (as seen in my video) and rides as it should. The car gets a lot of attention from all sorts of car enthusiasts. The rx7 is a truly timeless design that has been maintained to the highest degree. The car has been stored in a garage without exception since I’ve owned the car and has not been driven in the rain or snow. This car was just a fun nice day car.

2014 Mazda6: June 2013
Mon, 15 Jul 2013The 2014 Mazda6 is our most recent addition to the Autoblog long-term fleet, and we spent the month of June getting to know our Soul Red tester, generally enjoying the honeymoon phase of this twelve-month relationship. During June, the Mazda6 spent the majority of its time with director of photography Drew Phillips, who in addition to putting together this pretty gallery of our rakish long-term car, had a lot to say about it as a daily driver.
You see, not too long before Mazda delivered our long-term 6, Drew bought a 2014 CX-5 crossover to support his growing family. The CX-5 was the first vehicle to use Mazda's full suite of Skyactiv technologies, and we've generally enjoyed the good-to-drive CUV. A lot of that CX-5 goodness lies beneath the more shapely lines of this sleek Mazda6 sedan, so it's only fitting that Drew had a lot of comparisons between Mazda's two housemates during his month behind the wheel.
Live pics of 2014 Mazda3 from NYC, sedan on its way
Wed, 26 Jun 2013Here it is, ladies and gentlemen, straight from the memory cards of our own cameras. As you can see, the only version of the 2014 Mazda3 that the automaker is showing off at the moment is the hatchback, but we've gotten confirmation from Mazda that the sedan version will be shown sometime within the next five weeks.
So far, Mazda isn't commenting on whether or not we can expect a higher-performance Mazdaspeed3 version of the car, but we've got our fingers crossed. In any case, we're quite drawn to the appearance of this new hatchback from Mazda, with its flowing lines and character creases setting it apart from the rest of the compact segment in which it competes.
We also appreciate the sound engineering that went into the new 3. Despite boasting a wheelbase that's longer than the car it replaces, we're pleased to see that Mazda has kept its exterior size in check - it's actually shorter overall than the last-gen model - while also reducing weight by about 200 pounds. That's bound to be good for the new 3's dynamic properties.
2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata design walkaround
Sat, Sep 13 2014By now, you've likely read what we think of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata's new looks both inside and out, and you've probably poured over the available photos and started to make up your own mind about the roadster's radically more aggressive new appearance. More than likely, however, you haven't heard much from Mazda itself about its new design, and we're here to remedy that. Join Autoblog as we go over the new Miata from tip to tail with Derek Jenkins, Mazda North America's director of design. Jenkins, a veteran of both Audi and Volkswagen design studios, has been with the Japanese automaker for nearly four years, and he's kept a close eye in the ND Miata program along with his team in Irvine, CA. Check out our video to see Jenkins explain his team's exterior and cabin handiwork and to learn a little more about why the new model graduates from the Miata's historically cute and friendly aesthetic to something altogether more assertive.
