2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition coming to Chicago

While most people in the auto industry are fixated on the Detroit Auto Show just around the corner, Mazda is getting ready for the Chicago show next month. The company will celebrate the anniversary of the reveal of the original Miata there with a 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata 30th Anniversary Edition. Mazda released a single teaser image of the car, and it took us a minute to realize it really was a photo of a car. Looking closely, you'll be able to make out the roofline of a Miata RF in bright red. It also appears to have some gunmetal metallic wheels. Based on those details, the car sounds similar to the 25th Anniversary Edition Miata. That model featured a special white leather interior and a matching Tourneau watch. Mazda seems to like giving out watches with its anniversary Miatas, having provided Seiko watches with the 10th Anniversary cars. Those were painted in a special blue with a matching blue top and blue and black leather interior. The new-for-2014 Mazda6 sedan is more than just a pretty face. For Mazda, it marks the company's best effort yet at competing in the highly competitive midsize sedan segment, all the while staying true to the brand's core value of offering high levels of driver involvement above all. We certainly came away impressed after our first drive of the sleek Six in France last fall, and we knew right from the start that this would be a car we'd want to spend a lot of time with back here at home.
So with that in mind, the folks at Mazda graciously agreed to loan us the fully loaded Soul Red tester you see here for a one-year stay in the Autoblog long-term garage. Because of how important this car is to the segment, and to Mazda as a brand, we know there's going to be a lot to talk about it over the next 12 months. Right now, though, allow us to introduce you to the newest member of our long-term family.

Mazda6 AWD: More evidence surfaces

Last month, we learned that Mazda was seriously considering adding all-wheel drive to the Mazda6 line-up due to high demand. Now, more evidence has surfaced that an all-wheel-drive Mazda6 could be coming sooner than later. As first reported by Motor Trend, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website has listings for both the 2018 Mazda6 with the standard front-wheel-drive powertrain and a 2018 with all-wheel drive. Clicking on the all-wheel-drive link reveals that it has the exact same safety ratings and features listed as the front-wheel-drive model. Both pages also have links to the same technical data sheets, all of which are for the 2016 Mazda6. This is the case with the 2017 model listed on the NHTSA site, too. Naturally, this by no means confirms that Mazda is bringing an all-wheel-drive version to the United States. It's possible the inclusion was a mistake, or someone might have even typed an "A" instead of an "F" when creating that page. But also considering Mazda's interest in offering all-wheel drive, the existance of all-wheel-drive Mazda6 variants overseas, and the likely minor technical hurdles to overcome, we'd say the odds are pretty solid that we'll see four driven wheels in a Mazda6 in the near future, even if not this model year.
