1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE ChumpCar or LeMons Racer
PROVENANCE: "This is my 1985 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE ChumpCar racer. It finished 8th of 32 cars at the 24 hour ChumpCar race in 2010 at the Iowa Speedway in Newton and 14th of 65 cars at the 25.5 hour Championship race at the Iowa Speedway in 2011."
The RX-7 has 190,000 miles on it. It is a 13b fuel injected twin rotary engine with 5 speed manual transmission.
SAFTEY: • Autopower 12 point bolt in cage with a front welded re-enforced bar across the front dash. (worth about $1100 by itself) • Autopower Window Net • RCI 5 point racing harness • RCR Racing Seat (adjustable back and forth to accommodate different driver heights) • Fire Extinguisher • Rally Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel • Killswitch & Push button Start inside • Killswitch Outside • Tow Hooks MISC: • All Gauges work with exception of the fuel gauge (I have new sending unit) • All Lights and Defrost works (great for rain races) • Cross drilled and vented rotors with Ceramic Pads • Unique 15" Steel Wheels (2 sets) • Two 5 gallon fuel jugs • Lots of extra parts THE GOOD: This is a very solid car. I bought it from a guy in Madison, WI who had it stored from 1999 till I bought it in 2009. It has a title and is even has License plates registered to it in the State of Iowa. This is a remarkable well handling car. At the Iowa Speedway we could take any line into any corner and it stuck like glue. On the oval portion of the 25.5 hour race, it turned 29 second lap times and you only had to breathe the throttle going into turn 2. This car ran thru downpours without a single issue. You could steer the car easily with the gas due to the limited slip differential. Remarkable and solid braking performance. Not a ton of torque from the rotary but great high rpm power. This car is easy and a blast to drive! THE BAD: Has new 60k mile motor (questionable). The rear seal blew on the old motor getting it ready for a race last year. Everything is installed. Still working on getting the fuel pump and ignition to work. Needs exhaust pipe run from manifold to rear. THE UGLY: Has some dents from the last race thanks to overzealous drivers in an Acura Integra, Porsche 944, BMW 325i and a Subaru Imprezza (thanks guys!). It's only cosmetic and most dents will pop out. But it's a ChumpCar or LeMons racer and should look pretty to begin with. BONUS: Will thru in my Black RCI medium one piece Race Suit, RCI Race Gloves and size 9.5 Race Boots. Also have extra set (8 total) of P205/50R-15 tires and 15' Unique wheels too! If seriously interested, I would highly recommend calling me to discuss any concerns or questions. I will also be more than glad to send any pictures of anything you want to see. I love this car and have lots of great memories with her, but I have too many other toys and not enough time. . .
Thanks for looking!

Mazda3 diesel under consideration for US, hybrid not so much
Thu, 27 Jun 2013It's been a long time coming, but we finally clapped our eyes on the real deal, officially official 2014 Mazda3 in hatchback form yesterday. Yet there's a lot more to learn about this next-generation version of what has always been one of our favorite compacts. We know that the US version will come with one of two Skyactiv engines, but what about alternatives? Will there be any... or will the gasoline-fed four-cylinders be powerful and frugal enough to carry the day?
According to Automotive News, the answer is a definite maybe. Mazda North America CEO Jim O'Sullivan has told the trade publication that his employer will consider adding the company's well-liked 2.2-liter Skyactiv diesel powerplant to the model down the road. However, the company first wants to see how the engine fares with American consumers in its big-brother Mazda6 sedan, a model that goes on sale later this year. As for a potential Mazdaspeed3 successor, mum is still the word.
Anything else? Uncharacteristically, Mazda will build a hybrid model of its new 3. We say "uncharacteristically," because the Japanese independent has long shied away from gas-electric powertrain tech. In fact, it's gone so far as to boldly announce its aversion to the technology, with auto show banners proclaiming "Not Electric. Not Hybrid. Not A Drag To Drive." Despite all that, this new generation of Mazda3 will in fact be the company's first full hybrid production model. According to AN, however, O'Sullivan says that the company has "no plans" to sell it in the US.
Recharge Wrap-up: Mazda, Toyota earn environmental awards
Tue, Nov 10 2015Electric mobility nonprofit Drive Oregon has launched a campaign to invite the electric car industry to perform testing in the state. The campaign tells companies to, "Test Drive the Future in the Living Lab," citing Oregon's density of EV owners and charging infrastructure, varied terrain and climate, funding opportunities, and the state's technological reputation as the "Silicon Forest." Plus, as Drive Oregon Executive Director Jeff Allen, points out, "if you really screw things up here, it doesn't make as much noise as it would in California." Already, Jaguar Land Rover has announced plans for an Innovation Incubator in Oregon. Read more at Green Car Reports. Mazda's new paint system has won the Prime Minister's Award in the category of Manufacturing and Production Process at the 6th Monodzukuri Nippon Grand Award ceremony. Mazda's Aqua-tech paint system significantly reduces emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and CO2. The Aqua-tech system uses a water-based color basecoat and a urethane clear coat to reduce VOC emissions by 57 percent. It consolidates the painting process and reduces energy in paint-booth air-conditioning and flash-off processes to reduce energy consumption. It also allows Mazda to create such colors as Soul Red, which looks quite nice on the MX-5 Miata. Read more at Green Car Congress, and learn all about the Aqua-tech paint process from Mazda. The Toyota Mirai has received a 2015 Environmental Award from Austrian automobile club ARBO. The hydrogen fuel cell car took the prize in the category of Current Innovative Environmental Technologies. "At Toyota, we believe that various technologies will co-exist, ranging from EVs to hybrids to the most innovative of all, the fuel cell car," says Gerald Killmann, Vice President R&D of Toyota Motor Europe, in a comment thanking ARBO. "Mirai is a core component of Toyota's vision for a sustainable mobility society, one that allows us all to move freely in comfort and safety in an environmentally friendly, sustainable manner." Mazda2 with extended-range hybrid rotary tech shown
Mon, 23 Dec 2013Every story dealing with a new rotary engine from Mazda lands in a different place on the matrix of possibilities between "Coming soon!" and "Never gonna happen!" In 2011 it was speculated that the rotary engineering program would be shut down with the demise of the RX-8, in 2012 the program was still alive and taking lessons from the SkyActiv engines, in August 2013 a Mazda insider said a rotary engine called 16X would be here in two years, in November the CEO said the only way we'd ever get a new rotary is if Mazda could sell 100,000 of them per year. Meaning that, for the moment, you can forget about it.
And yet, last month Mazda was putting journalists in a Mazda2 RE Range Extender, an electric car using a 0.33-liter rotary to power its lithium-ion batteries when the charge runs down. With a 75-kilowatt, 100-horsepower electric motor turning the front wheels, the Wankel generator and its 2.6-gallon gas tank living under the trunk double the range of the electric-only Mazda2 to 250 miles.
There's been talk of using a rotary to assist an alt-fuel vehicle for at least seven years, with Mazda pairing an electric motor with a rotary that ran on gas and hydrogen in a Mazda5 in 2007. Since then, almost all of those stories debating its return or demise also spoke of the oddball motor's advantages, such as compact size and ability to run on various fuels, as an aid in an unconventional powertrain.
