I have up for auction a very nice example of an unmolested Mazda Protege Mazdaspeed with the 2.0 Turbo 4 cylinder engine.  This is not the typical modded out ragged on version that you see of these cars and is in amazing condition.  I bought this car on a whim for my 13-year-old son to work on and tune a little so he would have a car to drive when he turns 16.  You know, that father-son project that would be fun to work on over a couple of years.  He is not crazy about the color and would rather have a 4x4.  Soooo I am looking to sell it and get him involved in the next purchase.

The guy I bought the car from bought it from the original owner in 2007 with 40,000 miles on it.  He drove it, daily, 100 miles to work and back.  He put the carbon fiber hood on it to give it the tuner look and also put the wheels on it that you see pictured.  He ran only synthetic oil, changed it regularly and always did whatever service was necessary.  The only mods that this car has is billet aluminum engine mounts, billet aluminum turbo wastegate, carbon fiber hood, cat-back exhaust with can, aftermarket wheels/tires and a really nice aftermarket double DIN touchscreen stereo.  He had a subwoofer box in the trunk but had removed it and the amp prior to sale.  I believe all the wiring is there including the RCA inputs from the deck.  There have been NO engine mods, turbo mods, airbox mods, injector mods or other tuning done to this car.  It is a very reliable and excellent running and looking car.  A great car to drive as-is or tune it to the max.

The car had a recent complete paint job.  He hit a deer and did some minor front-end damage and decided to spend a little extra money to repair some minor rust that was starting to show and repaint the whole car.  The shop did a very nice job overall.  I would rate the paint a 9 out of 10.  there is a little overspray in the door jambs and one run that I found by looking really close, but it is as sharp as it looks in the pics.  The color is not a bright yellow, but a more muted color yellow with fine metal flake.  The carbon fiber hood looks a bit weathered and has some cracks, fading and clear-coat that is peeling.  I would think another coat of clear would make it look really nice.

The tires have about 50% tread and the wheels are a bit weathered.  They could use a good polish or a good sandblast and powdercoat.

The interior is very clean with very little wear.  The seats are all good and firm and the carpets are better than you would expect with this many miles.  There were a couple of interior panels that he had painted while the body shop was at it and they look great.

This car starts, drives, shifts and stops great.  The clutch works very well with no clatter and the gears hold without issue in all positions.  The engine sounds great, very quiet with no chatter or questionable sounds.  The A/C blows cold.  The stock muffler was removed and a cat-back exhaust installed in it's place with a can at the tip.  Not overly loud and obnoxious.  I have driven this car a few hundred miles and get 30+/- m.p.g.  I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere.

The only issue that I can find that would need to be addressed on the whole car is the e-brake cable is broken.

Extras included:  OEM aluminum hood, front driver and passenger window glass, motors, regulators and controls, OEM wheels without tires and a few other odds and ends.  (He bought two rust-free doors and put them in place of the original doors when the car was re-painted)

Feel free to call with any questions or to schedule a personal inspection and test-drive.  Let me know if you would like to see some additional pics.  I am not interested in any trades.  My reserve is set very low and I would expect it to be easily met.  Please plan on sending $500 by paypal when the auction ends and pay the rest in CASH upon pickup.  If you would prefer to wire the money ahead of the pickup, that would be fine, but I need it to be paid in full and all funds cleared prior to or upon pickup.  Thanks -- Mark @ 231-250-4790.  The car is located in Greenville, Michigan, 48838.  I can assist in a fly-in and drive home if you want to fly in to Lansing, MI or Grand Rapids, MI.  Clear title will be in hand.

China's FAW now building all three Mazda6 generations

Tue, 13 May 2014

The Chinese auto market is one of the most interesting in the world to look at. Its automakers appear to still be figuring things out and remain open to experimentation. For example, at this moment, you can buy new copies of all three generations of the Mazda6 from showrooms there.
Mazda joint-venture partner FAW recently introduced the latest generation to China as the Mazda6 Atenza, according to Just Auto. Yet buyers still have the option of getting the previous generation as well, which is sold as the Mazda6 Ruiyi. Obviously, that isn't too remarkable - companies in the US have briefly sold two generations of the same nameplate simultaneously for brief points in the past, and the practice is much more common in developing markets. However, Chinese consumers still have the third choice, too - the first-generation model that dates back to the early 2000s, is still on offer, known simply as Mazda6.
While it would be hard to imagine selling three generations of the same models at once in the US, the idea is an interesting one. We enjoyed our long-term test of the latest generation, and the previous models weren't bad cars either, so provided there's a healthy difference in pricing and marketplace confusion is limited by differing names, we can see it working. If nothing else, it's a fascinating illustration of how broad China's developing auto market really is.

Mazda engineers urging execs for more RWD models

Wed, 02 Oct 2013

According to Edmunds, Mazda engineers are pressuring the company to create more rear-wheel-drive models, in an effort to better differentiate itself from its rivals. This push is reportedly coming from middle and senior engineers within the company, and these folks at Mazda believe this rear-drive strategy would allow the automaker to produce more distinctive, fun to drive cars. Mazda discontinued the rear-drive (and rotary-engined) RX-8 a few years ago, leaving the MX-5 Miata as the company's only RWD offering.
As enthusiasts, we're fully on board with Mazda offering more rear-drive cars, but unsurprisingly, the company's top management isn't exactly keen on the idea - and with good reason. First and foremost, the cost associated with redesigning fresh architecture for new models would be very high, and considering the fact that Mazda hasn't exactly been raking in the dough lately, an expensive new venture like this doesn't make a whole lot of sense. What's more, Mazda's latest front-drive models - the Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 - have been very well-received, and are helping the company gain sales momentum.
But that doesn't mean there aren't other options. Edmunds reminds us that Mazda is already partnering with Alfa Romeo on the next-generation Miata, and if this collaboration is successful, perhaps the relationship could bear additional fruit. After all, Alfa Romeo is said to be working on returning to its rear-wheel-drive roots, so Mazda's engineers might be able to make a case for more RWD goodness after all.

This California rally is vintage Japanese car heaven

Wed, Apr 13 2016

What's so good about the future? This is what I was thinking when some folks at Mazda invited me and a handful of other journalists to join them on the second-annual Touge California. It's a rally for classic Japanese cars that covers a huge chunk of Southern California's twistier roads, where fans get to test their beloved machines. Oh, and it attracts swarms of admirers with cameras. "It is not a race. It is a vintage touring rally," said Ben Hsu, editor in chief of Japanese Nostalgic Car, and one of the coordinators of the event. "In Japan, touge most definitely refers to racing, whether timed, in touge battles, or drifting antics. Touge California was created to give drivers of Japanese classics a taste, as close as possible, of the types of roads their cars were forged on." Touge California was created to give drivers of Japanese classics a taste, as close as possible, of the types of roads their cars were forged on. We started the day on a mundane stop-and-go freeway drive from Mazda's Irvine headquarters to Escondido, me riding shotgun with my journalist co-driver in a 2016 Miata. But Mazda also brought along three heritage products on this trip – a 1985 RX-7 GSL-SE, a 1978 GLC three-door hatchback, and a 1975 REPU (rotary engined pickup) – serving as reminders of the company's history in the U.S. The group of Mazdas was joined in Escondido by many more Mazdas. And Toyotas, Hondas, Datsuns – so many 240Zs – and the odd Subaru and Mitsubishi. In total, 28 cars were at the start line. "We doubled the field this year, and made the route longer – 200 versus 120 miles," Hsu said. "We separated the cars into two run groups based on speed and a mix of makes and models." I spent the first part of the rally in the Mazda pickup to get a taste of rotary power. It was my first experience behind the wheel of a Wankel-powered vehicle, my first time driving a small Japanese truck from the '70s, and my God that thing has a lot of power. I had a few scares when I had to stand on the brakes, and I found the shift throw's immense length disconcerting – it felt like third gear engaged somewhere in front of the dashboard, with fourth somewhere in the bed. The truck was a great introduction to the rotary, however, and to '70s Japanese cars. Especially in Southern California, old Japanese cars aren't as novel to casual observers as they might be in other parts of the country.
