The facts-
Yellow 2002 Mazda Pretege5 for sale roughly 118K miles. 5-speed. Power Everything. All-Weather Kuhmo ecsta tires. seeking $3349, WELL below the Kelley Blue Book, will entertain other offers. NO TRADES. Clear Title, clean carfax (it was in 2007 when I bought it and I haven't been in any accidents).

The Good:

No major mechanical issues, have never had to do any work on the motor/drivetrain.

AC blows very cool, heat blows very hot.

Radio works, speakers were replaced with expensive component Blaupunkt 6.5s in the front, Orions in the back.
Vehicle previously had an aftermarket deck and amps installed, I will include the deck mounting kit and wiring harness from that installation in case you want to replace the deck.

Front brake pads and rotors replaced in February.

Alternator belt and serpentine belt replaced this past spring as well.

Cruise, power locks, power windows, power moonroof and keyless entry all work perfectly.

No rips, tears or stains in the interior upholstery.

Clutch is still springy, transmission is very responsive.

Oil changed last week.

Tires are a year old with plenty of tread life left.

I have at least 90% of the service records for the cars life.

I have the roof racks (not pictured) for the car and will obviously include them. I took them off because I did not find them very useful.

The Issues:
Car had some rust develop in the wheel wells, as Japanese cars of this age tend to do.. I blew the rust off, primed and painted the area, but i did not grind the area down or do any professional body work so you can see the texture/paint color mismatch there (see images).

Last summer someone cut my exhaust pipe to steal the catalytic converter. So the good news is that the Catalytic converter is about a year old, unfortunately they cut the exhaust manifold to get to it and my mechanic had to make the connection without the stock fittings. it works fine, but you hear a slight rattle at higher RPMs sometimes. does not affect anything, just a slight noise. Cannot even hear it with the radio on.

Car is 11 years old and a very bright color so it has its fair share of dings and marks throughout the body. The most major one is on the front right bumper where someone swiped me in a parking lot. I painted it (see photo) so there is a slight paint mismatch.

Just noticed as I was cleaning it that the cap came of the front left foglight leaving it exposed... Im sure a replacement could be ordered from Mazda. Light still works (I usually leave them off unless it is foggy).

Thats it for issues, really runs like a dream for a car of this age and price.

That is about it, email me with additional questions. I have owned this car for over 6 years (I am the 3rd owner) and I have loved it the entire time. It is extremely fun to drive, gets great gas mileage (about 30 MPG) and is extremely practical. I am only selling because I have moved to NYC and will be relying on public transportation.

Thanks!!!

Mazda patents show rotary engine for range-extended EV

Fri, Mar 17 2017

Two years ago, Mazda introduced a fascinating range-extended electric car called the Mazda2 RE Range-Extender. It took an electric Mazda2, and dropped in an itty-bitty 330cc rotary engine. It wasn't the rotary-powered sports car we had hoped for, but it seemed like a unique way to keep the quirky engine alive and kicking. But not long after the car's reveal, it seemed to disappear. Now the basic idea has resurfaced with a few modern updates in a couple of US patents. The first patent is pretty straightforward and describes a range-extended EV similar to the BMW i3. At the front is an electric motor driving the front wheels. At the back is an internal combustion engine that powers an electric generator. In the middle is a lithium-ion battery for storing and delivering electricity. It's the same set-up as that Mazda2. The second patent is for an engine start-and-stop system, but specifically for rotary engines. The system is designed to shut off a rotary engine when not needed, much as modern piston engines do. It also stops the rotor in a position that closes the intake port to ensure no fuel or exhaust emissions slip out through the intake tract. This is necessary since there are no valves in a rotary, and air and exhaust come through ports that are "opened" and "closed" by the rotor itself. The patent also describes the possibility of firing a spark plug after the fuel has been cut to eliminate any leftover fuel emissions. This system would theoretically improve a rotary engine's fuel economy and emissions significantly, which would be a boon as those are two of the rotary's major weaknesses. The rotary-engine patent also includes the same range-extended powertrain drawing as the first patent. It's there as a description of a possible application. And in such an application, where the rotary wouldn't have to run all the time, the system could take advantage of the rotary's inherent strengths. Weight can be kept low thanks to the engine's small dimensions, which should help in keeping the car sprightly and efficient. Rotaries are renowned for smoothness, too, so it shouldn't need too much refining and sound deadening, the latter of which adds more weight. The small size would also help with packaging, leaving more space for people, cargo, or possibly batteries. And since it has been patented, the company may be looking to bring the system to market.

Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo reshapes a winning form [w/video]

Fri, Dec 26 2014

In the history of endurance racing, there's only ever been one Japanese automaker to win the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, and as you might have guessed, that was Mazda in 1991 with the 787B – which was, incidentally, the only one ever to win the race under rotary power, or really anything other than a conventional piston engine. That racing success is something Mazda can be proud about, even over two decades later, and it's a badge of honor the automaker is revisiting with the LM55 prototype you see here. Only instead of unleashing it on the Circuit de la Sarthe – or really any actual race track – the Mazda LM55 Vision Gran Turismo is bound only for PlayStation. The latest addition to the Vision Gran Turismo lineup, the LM55 takes inspiration from the aforementioned 787B but gives it a modern KODO design theme. The result is pretty stunning, taking a more radical approach than the Skyactiv Prototype the company is fielding in the United SportsCar Championship or even the dearly departed, head-turning Furai concept. But unlike that diesel prototype and the Wankel-powered 787B, Mazda hasn't specified any kind of novel powertrain for the LM55, fictitious or otherwise - saying only that it has "advanced drive train technology that offers the epitome of power, efficiency and durability and the result is an exceptional power to weight ratio exceeding that of most cars in its class." Just what that class would be we'll likely never find out, but if you don't have a PS3 loaded with GT6 (or, for that matter, even if you do), you can scope out the virtual action in the slideshow above and the rather Christmas-y video below. Will the new Mazda Miata be available with multiple engines?

Mon, 01 Sep 2014

At this point, the countdown until the launch of the all-new, fourth-generation 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata can be measured in hours until its September 3 unveiling as easily as it can in days. With the debut of such a highly anticipated model so close, the rumors about the new sports car are starting to boil over.
We recently heard that the new Miata would likely get a 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder with a six-speed manual, plus a decent drop in weight compared to the current gen. There's even the rumored possibility of a fastback coupe version sometime in the future.
Now, Australia's GoAuto is adding another dollop of speculation into the mix with the claim that there could be "potentially more engine options," according to Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders to the website. The more potent option would still be the 2.0-liter Skyactiv with a power bump from its current 167 hp to closer to 200 ponies. The other possible powerplant option would be a 1.5-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder taken from the upcoming Mazda2 replacement. This version would also ditch some of the MX-5's more premium features to cut the weight and the price slightly.
