the MAZDA3 2012 continues to be available in both sedan and 4-door hatchback body styles. Buyers have their choice between i, s and new SkyActiv versions. The car was completely redesigned for the 2010 model year, so updates for 2012 are modest, but important. Styling has been updated slightly, with a redesigned grille and rear valence, but the biggest news is an all-new high-efficiency engine combination under the hood. The 3 starts with a 148-horsepower 2.0L 4-cylinder engine when ordered with the i package. Order the s and you get a 2.5L 167-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. The all-new SkyActiv package features a special 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, making 155 horsepower. Finally, at the top of the range, the MazdaSpeed 3 returns with a turbocharged 2.3L 4-cylinder engine, making 263 horsepower. The i comes equipped with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission, while 2.5L models get a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic. SkyActiv buyers have their choice of manual or automatic 6-speeds, and the MazdaSpeed 3 is only available with the performance-oriented 6-speed manual. Mileage figures come in at 25/33 mpg for the manual-equipped i, while the manual s is rated at 20/28 mpg. Automatic SkyActiv versions achieve an impressive 28/40 mpg, according to Mazda. The new SkyActiv package works via a lighter combination of parts (4.4 pounds lighter than the 2.0L engine), special multi-port fuel injectors for better fuel spray inside each cylinder, specially designed pistons that allow shorter combustion times and dual sequential valve timing. Mazda says the new engine features a new drive control system as well, which helps to let the engine and transmission work better as a combination, giving the car much better reaction to driver input. The i comes in SV, Sport and Touring trims, while the s sedan and hatchback can be fitted in Touring or Grand Touring trims. SkyActiv is available in both hatchback and sedan body styles. Overall, the 3 continues to be practical small car, with enough room for four adults when required.Standard safety features include advanced front airbags, side-impact airbags, side-curtain airbags, stability control, and traction control. An optional blind spot monitoring system is available as well, but only on Grand Touring models fitted with the Technology Package. Base models come with cloth upholstery, power mirrors and windows, tilt/telescopic steering column, 60/40 split folding rear bench seat and AM/FM/CD stereo. The i Touring adds niceties like air conditioning, cruise control, power locks, keyless entry, and electronic stability control. The s Touring and s Grand Touring come equipped with a sunroof and 10-speaker Bose audio. The Technology package consists of in-dash navigation, satellite radio, rain-sensing wipers, Bluetooth, HomeLink garage door opener, keyless entry and starting, and bi-xenon headlamps that turn with steering input.

Mazda MX-5 Miata goes Head 2 Head with Subaru BRZ

Wed, Aug 5 2015

It's a battle that's been in the making for some time now: the Subaru BRZ versus the Mazda MX-5 Miata. And now that the new Miata has arrived – and in Club spec to boot – that's exactly what Motor Trend has lined up for its latest episode of Head 2 Head. Now before you go screaming that one's a coupe and the other a convertible, take a few commonalities into account. Roofs aside, both feature a 2.0-liter four mounted up front, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Both are made by Japanese automakers and cost around $25-30k, give or take. Both produce around the same amount of torque, and while the Subaru may be more powerful, the Mazda's considerably lighter. To create a more even contest, then, you'd have to line a BRZ up against a Scion FR-S, or the MX-5 against the upcoming Fiat version of the same. Of course, being that close on paper doesn't mean that it's a draw. One has to come out on top. And after taking both along country roads and the Streets of Willow racing circuit, our friends at MT have picked one over the other. You'll want to watch the 22-minute video above (or at least skip ahead to the end) to see which came out on top, but if you're as enthused by a purist driver's car as we are, you'll enjoy every minute of it. Mazda MX-5 breeds upgraded Roadster RS in Japan

Mon, Oct 5 2015

Fans of the new Mazda MX-5 Miata looking for something a little more performance-focused may be enticed by the new RS model. Unfortunately they'll have to go all the way to Japan to get it. Because Mazda will only be offering this particular version back home. The new RS version of the Mazda Roadster (as it's known in Japan) features a number of performance upgrades, although none of them specifically affect the engine or its output. The Roadster RS features Bilstein dampers and front suspension tower brace for better handling, along with bigger brakes for added stopping power, a retuned steering rack for sharper turn-in, and upgraded exhaust for a better sound. Inside it's also been treated to heated Recaro seats with Nappa leather and Alcantara trim and a nine-speaker Bose audio system. It also comes equipped with adaptive front lighting and high-beam control as well as lane-departure and blind-spot warning systems. Feeling left out yet? Don't be too disappointed, or book that ticket to Tokyo's Natita International Airport just yet. The Mazda Roadster RS only comes with the smaller 1.5-liter engine that produces 129 horsepower, which is significantly less than the 2.0L we get here at 155 hp. It does, however, come with the six-speed manual instead of the automatic. So while this may not be the most powerful version of the Miata, it may be the enthusiast favorite – at least in the JDM. 2017 Mazda CX-9 Prototype First Drive

Tue, Nov 24 2015

If you read our coverage from last week's Los Angeles Auto Show, you'll note that we were extremely fond of the new Mazda CX-9. We like the look of the thing, inside and out, and it promises to be the best-driving entry in the three-row crossover class. We agree wholeheartedly with that claim. You see, we already drove it. Full disclosure: Our test of the camouflaged CX-9 prototype you see here was short, and while we were able to get a good handle on the CX-9's basic driving dynamics, it'll take more than a 30-mile session around the outskirts of LA to uncover the finer details. What's more, these vehicles are not production ready. In fact, according to our handlers at Mazda, the CUV we tested was actually at the stage before pre-production – so basically, a pre-pre-production car. That said, all the details about the engine, transmission, suspension, and steering are "largely final." As you can see in the gallery, the cars we tested were heavily camouflaged both inside and out. As for styling, we love it – see the undisguised pictures from the LA show for more views. And as for inside, we can say leather seats of our Grand Touring model were comfortable and supportive, and the smallish steering wheel felt natural in the hand. Even in pre-pre-production state, the CX-9 was impressively quiet. An extra 53 pounds of under-floor sound deadening, thicker windows, and active noise cancellation all contribute to what Mazda claims will be "among the quietest vehicles in its class." It's worth noting that the good sounds, like the throaty, whooshy noises of the turbocharged engine, found their way into the cabin just fine. The 2.5-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine – Mazda's first force-induced Skyactiv engine – is an excellent piece. The 2.5-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine – Mazda's first force-induced Skyactiv engine – is an excellent piece. It uses a variable geometry turbocharger, which the company calls a Dynamic Pressure Turbo. Here's how Mazda explains it: Imagine a normal garden hose. Put your thumb over the nozzle, and the force of the water increases dramatically. That's the DPT at low rpms. It features three small exhaust ports to direct exhaust gases into the turbo, making for 17.4 quick-spooling PSI at low rpms. As the revs climb, a flow control valve opens up, redirecting the gases to a trio of larger ports – removing your thumb from the hose, if you will – and keeping the boost up.
