Finalists for 2014 Green Car of the Year announced
Thu, 17 Oct 2013The list of finalists for the 2014 Green Car of the Year has been announced, and in a genuinely bizarre twist, there's only one hybrid and no electric vehicles among the five contestants, despite the arrival of cars like the BMW i3 and Tesla Model S. Taking the place of the EVs are a pair of diesels, repping a technology that last won a Green Car of the Year award in 2009, when the Audi A3 TDI took the title. No diesel was in the running for last year's award.
Naturally, both of the diesel finalists are fielded by the Germans - with BMW's 328d and Audi's A6 TDI getting the nod. In the case of the 3 Series, BMW installed a 2.0-liter, turbodiesel, capable of delivering 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while returning 45 miles per gallon on the highway. Audi and its larger, 3.0-liter, V6 turbodiesel produce quite a bit more grunt, with 240 hp and 428 lb-ft of grunt, but net a very impressive 38 mpg on the highway in the A6.
Finalists for this year's awards include two diesels, three gas-powered cars and a plug-in hybrid.
Mazda will decide who gets the MX-5 RF Launch Edition, like it's Ferrari or something
Thu, Aug 18 2016When Mazda introduced the 2017 MX-5 Miata RF at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, the vehicle came as a surprise. Everyone was expecting a new Miata variant, but no one thought it would be a retractable fastback, especially one that looks this good. Mazda listened to all of the positive feedback and decided to offer the same vehicle from the auto show as a limited-edition model. But you can't just go down to the dealer and place an order, at least for now. It's called the MX-5 Miata RF Launch Edition, only 1,000 of them will be made, and they'll go only to Mazda's "valued customers." Instead of opening up orders to anyone, Mazda took a page out of Ferrari's book and is extending invitations to customers through email. The chosen few will have a specific amount of time to preorder the limited-edition model before the automaker gives everyone the opportunity to buy one, assuming there are any left. You might remember that Mazda did a similar thing with the first ND Miata roadsters – the 2016 MX-5 Launch Edition went to the first 1,000 customers that placed orders on www.longlivetheroadster.com. The Launch Edition is painted Machine Gray with a black roof panel and has Auburn Nappa leather on the inside – the same combination as the debut car. Future MX-5 RF models will be available with the same paint and leather, but will miss out on the black roof and special badges. Launch Edition buyers will also get a numbered Tourneau watch with the vehicle, and will only have just one choice to make – manual or automatic transmission. (We know which we'd choose.) Pricing for the RF Launch Edition has not been released, but we expect the regular RF to come in a little higher than the roadster's $25,750 base price. The MX-5 RF will go on sale early next year. Mazda3 celebrates 10 happy years
Tue, 25 Jun 2013Mazda is on the cusp of unveiling an all-new Mazda3, but the compact will mark an important milestone before that happens. The very first Mazda3 rolled off of the assembly line on June 25, 2003. A decade later, the little car has snagged some 136 awards. The first generation sold 2.2 million units over the span of six years, and the second has smiled its way into the hearts of 1.4 million buyers since 2009. Mazda notes the machine even took the honor of being the top-selling passenger car in Australia in 2011 and 2012.
So, what will the future bring? The Japanese automaker is keeping the details to itself for the moment. From the spy photos we've seen, it looks as if the new design will fall under the company's new Kodo design philosophy. That same language brought us the perilously sexy Mazda6, and the new Mazda3 should be no less attractive. You can check out those photos here.
