1991 Mazda Miata Mx5 Special Edition Se British Racing Green Brg #3738/4000 Lsd on 2040-cars
Seneca, South Carolina, United States
If you are someone looking for the ultimate Miata time capsule, then you have finally found it. For all intents and purposes this is a one owner car; the original owner owned it from 1991 when she (a doctor's wife) bought it new and then they finally sold it near the end 2013. The owner kept EVERY single receipt. I even have the original window sticker, car magazine articles from the era, the "Miata Book", the letter from Mazda to the original owners of the BRG SE Miatas, and various other memorabilia that a true Miata aficionado will appreciate. A rare find for sure. Car has spent almost its entire life on Hilton Head Island in SC where it was used primarily as transportation to and from the golf course and pleasure cruising, thus the low miles. Lovingly garaged its entire life, and it shows. Those who have looked at these cars know how rare it is to see the OEM Mazda soft top intact, let alone in phenomenal shape like this one. Even the factory paint markings on the bolt heads are still visible underneath the hood and on the bottom of the chassis. All body panel VIN tags in place and un touched. OEM floor mats look brand new. Car is equipped with the highly desired limited slip differential, leather interior, and power windows.....basically all the goodies you could get in 1991. I have the factory tonneau cover, top boot, owner's manual, factory front license plate mount (never installed), factory ash tray for the center console, factory cup holder, etc. Nothing, and I mean nothing is missing here. Brand new tires all around.
Now with all that being said, I want to start by saying I'm a perfectionist so a lot of things I see as faults the average guy wouldn't even care about or notice. But regardless, I try to be as up front an honest about a car's condition from my point of view. So the only flaws that I see are:
1) Light bolster wear on driver's seat edge
2) Paint on top of dash is degrading, just like any Miata with the black painted dash from this era experiences. On cars receiving black dashes from the factory, Mazda simply sprayed the tan plastic dashes installed in all vehicles black. Over time, the paint gets "tacky" and starts to degrade. Very common "issue" if you search. Personally, I didn't find it to be an issue at all. Definitely wasn't worth pulling the dash just to paint the dash top.
3) Original owner replaced the factory head unit with a Pioneer CD player. She did not keep the OEM unit so unfortunately I don't have it. Again....wasn't a big deal to me, but I realize that it's a detail that could be important to some.
3) As well preserved as the factory paint job is, I don't want to give the impression that it is perfect or showroom condition. There are some scratches and a ding here and there, most notably on the driver's rear quarter panel. Looks like where a belt may have scratched it from the driver leaning over to put up the top. Looks like there was one on the right front fender as well that has been fixed with touch up paint.
So there you have it. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a Miata this complete, this original, with this low of mileage from this era. Happy bidding.

R&T chases down a burglar in the million-mile Miata
Mon, 04 Aug 2014Is the answer always Mazda Miata? We discussed this in passing on the Autoblog Podcast earlier this week, and most assuredly the answer is "no." For example, the little MX-5 would be a terrible people carrier, and it'd be useless off road. You can't really tow anything of substance with it, either. Still, if push came to shove, it's satisfying to know that the diminutive roadster could eke out a career as a chase vehicle for the police.
That fact was proven when Road & Track editor Chris Cantle did something that he himself recognizes as "stupid." Upon returning home, Cantle discovered a "twenty-something" actively burgling his home. The resulting story is easily one of the more entertaining episodes to come out of the 1990 MX-5's service to the team at R&T and, we're guessing, will be one of the highlights of the Million-Mile Miata challenge.
Be sure to head over to Road & Track for a full retelling of the chase from Cantle, as well as a follow-up on the saga.
2016 Mazda2 gets EPA-rated 43 mpg highway
Fri, Apr 10 2015To paraphrase the famous quote from astronaut Neil Armstrong, that's one small step for man and one giant leap for the Mazda2. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has weighed in on the new Mazda2 version, and says it gets a fuel-economy rating of 33 miles per gallon city and 43 mpg highway with a six-speed automatic transmission. Stick-shift gas-mileage figures are 31 city and 42 highway, which are still substantially better than the 29/35 rating from the most recent iteration of the model. That's about a 15-percent jump in fuel economy, people. More importantly, the Mazda2 beats out competitors such as the Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio Eco and even the Honda Fit in terms of fuel efficiency, which is pretty good company. The Mazda2 boasts a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. But it is the upgrade to six-speed transmissions in both manual and automatic versions that seem to be making the biggest difference in the ratings. Mazda started unveiling details about the next-generation Mazda2 last year, and last fall began production of the model at Mazda's new factory in Salamanca, Mexico. At that time, the Japanese automaker had already sold more than 2.4 million Mazda2 vehicles since the model's introduction in 1996. Related Video:
eBay Find of the Day: 1990 Mazda Miata with just 27 original miles
Wed, 14 Aug 2013Some cars have low mileage, and others have close to no miles at all. This 1990 Mazda Miata, currently listed on eBay Motors and located in Kingman, Arizona, falls into the latter category with only 27 miles on the odometer, according to the seller. But we have to wonder: how did one of the best-driving, most influential sports cars of the past two decades sit without being driven for 24 years? Consider it the seller's loss on this one.
The seller says he bought the car with 20 miles on it, and explains 6.9 miles were added when the car was towed home on a car dolly. It was never registered. Furthermore, the seller says the car didn't come with a set of keys, so he had to have a set made. Though the paint is clean and shiny, the Miata didn't escape minor cosmetic damage over the years, with scratches on the hood, the trunk and the factory hardtop that is included with the car. The front, right fender has a small dent as well, which can be seen in a picture. The seller says the car was stored in a building with windows, so the paint is faded a bit in some places. It's missing its antenna and the battery, and the only non-original parts on the car are the windshield wipers. The clear-title car comes with all paperwork, according to the seller, but, besides the owners manual, he didn't specify what other documentation would be included.
With bidding currently at $10,300 and the reserve not met, this Miata definitely isn't the deal of the century, and we have to question where the value is in this one. The way we see it, it's hard to justify the money if it can't be driven as-is (come on, no battery?), has questionable history, isn't rare and sat in storage for its whole existence. The "weather cracked" tires are probably just the first rubber parts on the car that need to be replaced before it can be driven, but at least the spark plugs were removed and the cylinders were filled with Marvel Mystery Oil prior to storage, which helps to prevent rust and corrosion from forming in the engine.
