1989 Mazda Rx-7 Convertible Convertible 2-door 13b Rotary Engine on 2040-cars
Crestview, Florida, United States
I am helping my father sell a 1989 Mazda RX-7 Convertible automatic in Blue with a FC 13B Engine for $1500 obo. The 13B Injection is stamped into the top of engine. I will do my best to describe this based on what he has told me and what I see. He purchased this as a project car and is just not going to be able to do what he wanted. First, I will say the engine and transmission appear to be in good working order. The engine starts right up and sounds pretty good from what I can tell. There are no check engine lights that come on when I ran it. The battery is brand new and the tires have less than 1500 miles on them. There is a ding in the right front corner fender, a few scratches on the front right of the hood area where a little rust has formed. I could not find any rust on any of the wheel wells, doors fenders or trunk. There is some rust on trim of the windows. There is two spots with a tar like substance on the body on the driver side. The power headlights open and close without any problems. The convertible works well and he does have the boot (cover) for it as well. The convertible will need to be replaced due to tears. The paint on the hood and trunk have faded as would be expected. The interior needs work throughout. He tells me the motors to the power windows work, however the switches need to be replaced. The radio works but needs a new antenna. I do not know if the security system, CD player or cassette player function. The oil pressure gauge does not currently work. The A/C does work and blows well but isn't ice cold. Beyond this I don't know any of the prior history of this vehicle.
This vehicle will need to be picked up in the Crestview, FL area within 7 days of the end of the auction unless other arrangements have been coordinated prior. We may be able to deliver the vehicle with prior arrangements within a short distance of Crestview, FL as well. Upon completion 10% of the purchase price must be paid within 24 hours of the close of the item. The remaining balance will be due upon receipt of the vehicle. Thank You for Viewing This Listing Overall, I believe this a good buy for a sporty convertible project car with a ton of upside, especially one that is running. *** A Little Additional Info about the Mazda RX-7 from wikipedia. Engine The Series 5 (1989--1992) featured updated styling and better engine management, as well as lighter rotors and a higher compression ratio, 9.7:1 for the naturally aspirated model, and 9.0:1 for the turbo model. The naturally aspirated Series 5 FC made 160 hp (119 kW), while the Series 5 Turbo made 200 hp / 205 ps (147 kW). Convertible Mazda introduced a convertible version of the RX-7 in 1988 with a Naturally aspirated engine -- introduced to the US market with ads featuring Hollywood actor James Garner, at the time featured in many of Mazda's television advertisements. The convertible featured a removable rigid section over the passengers and a folding textile rear section with heatable rear glass window. Power operated, lowering the top required unlatching two header catches, power lowering the top, exiting the car (or reaching over to the right side latch), and folding down the rigid section manually. Mazda introduced with the convertible the first integral windblocker, a rigid panel that folded up from behind the passenger seats to block unwanted drafts from reaching the passengers -- thereby extending the driving season for the car in open mode. The convertible also featured optional headrest mounted audio speakers and a folding leather snap-fastened tonneau cover. The convertible assembly was precisely engineered and manufactured, and dropped into the ready body assembly as a complete unit -- a first in convertible production. Several leading car magazines at the time also selected the convertible as one of the best rag-tops available on the market (see Automobile Magazine/January 1988, Performance Car Magazine/January 1989). Mazda exported approximately five thousand convertibles to the United States in 1988 and fewer in each of the next three model years, although it is difficult to confirm these figures, as Mazda USA did not keep RX-7 import records by model type. Production ceasing in 1991 after Mazda marketed a limited run of 500 example for 1992 for the domestic market only. In Japan, the United Kingdom, and other regions outside the US, a turbocharged version of the convertible was available. |

2014 Mazda6 earns Popular Mechanics' 'Car of the Year'
Tue, 12 Nov 2013Ring one up for Mazda. The Japanese brand's midsize offering, the Mazda6, has been named Popular Mechanics' Car of the Year. The 6 received a comprehensive reworking for the 2014 model year that saw it adopt sleek, sexy sheet metal; a clean, logical interior; and powertrain technologies that allow it to net some of the best fuel economy available in a gas-powered, non-hybrid sedan.
Popular Mechanics praised the 6's Skyactiv 2.5-liter, 184-horsepower engine, as well as its agility and responsiveness during testing. It also remarked on the functional, but well designed cabin, and the degree of available technology.
"The Mazda6 really impressed us with how well it delivers so many things modern car owners want: great mileage, fun road-handling, upscale features and looks - and remarkable value," said Jim Meigs, Editor-in-Chief of Popular Mechanics.
LA Design Challenge invokes biology for 2025 concepts [w/poll]
Wed, 13 Nov 2013Participants in the annual LA Design Challenge always manage to come up with edgy, wacky designs for future vehicles, but with a theme of "Biomimicry and Mobility: 2025" this year's crop of cars might be the quirkiest we've ever seen. As usual, automotive designers from around the world participated in this year's competition, and all the designs will all be unveiled next week during the LA Auto Show with a winner being announced on November 21.
Chinese automakers made a strong showing with Qoros, SAIC Motor, JAC Motors (the company responsible for the Ford F-150 clone) and Changfeng all bringing interesting takes on the biology, human intelligence and sustainability theme. One of the more innovative ideas among these automakers is the Qoros Silk Road System allows autonomous vehicles to drive in packs similar to how ants travel. Speaking of ants, the SAIC Motor Mobiliant (shown above) gets its design from the shape of an ant's body, and, like the insect, it can climb building acting as a personal elevator as well. The JAC Motors design also merges vehicle and building design, while the Changfeng LaBrea inspired by the design of muscle fibers.
Other entrants include Subaru and US-based design teams for BMW, Toyota and Mazda. BMW's duo of concepts mimic plant and animal life. The LA Subways concept acts as a submersible, single-person vehicle to take advantage of the LA river, with a shape similar to an Ocean Sunfish. The Sustainable Efficient Exploratory Device (SEED) imitates the shape of a seed pod, and uses propulsion methods inspired by a shark, dragonfly and a water bug. Mazda's Auto Adapt might be the most car-like concept of the bunch, while the Subaru Suba-Roo and the Calty-designed, Toyota e-grus are the most mind-blowingly awesome.
Mazda CX-5 in auto-brake accident on Japanese test drive
Thu, 14 Nov 2013As we slowly march towards a world where our cars will drive for us, there will be mishaps. Systems will act up, not behave has intended or we'll simply forget to turn them on. We all remember when Volvo tested the S60's City Safety system. Now Mazda has had an issue of its own.
During a test of a Mazda CX-5's Smart City Brake Support on a dealership lot in Japan, a prospective customer and a dealership employee were injured when they hit a urethane barrier used for testing the system. According to Bloomberg, which spoke with the Saitama Prefectural Police, the impact with the barrier left the customer with an injured neck while the dealership employee suffered a fractured arm. Considering the injuries, we imagine this wasn't a small barrier.
"For any safety function, it's impossible to be 100-percent free of accidents. These technical functions aren't always the easiest to understand," IHS Automotive auto parts analyst, Hiroshi Ataka told Bloomberg.
