1959 MGA Twin Cam Coupe.
YM3-2059 The car has been
completely restored with a focus on vintage racing but with a minimum of
modifications to avoid the inability to make the car appear totally original
and street usable. It is being offered
for sale because my vintage racing focus has changed. The restoration started with a car that had been stored for more than 30 years in a dry barn. No rust repair but the firewall (thanks, Pat!) was replaced due to mouse and rat residue damage. Original parts were rechromed and reused whenever possible including rechroming the front and rear windshield moldings. The frame was sandblasted and powder coated as was the rear axle, rear springs, gas tank, transmission tunnel and front suspension and all related pieces. New floorboards. New windshield and front and rear window gaskets. A new OEM driver side door latch mechanism was found on eBay and installed so that the door closed as new.. Sockets for roll bar mounts were attached to the frame before powder coating and body installation. The body was sandblasted and repainted inside and out with Old English White (new Mini Cooper OEW) as per original. Black leather competition seats with white piping as per original were installed. Pictures show racing seat installed from last race because it is easier for me to drive with my long legs. The driver’s seat which matches the passenger seat goes with the car and will be installed prior to shipping the car. New proper style fasteners from Todd Clarke were used throughout with aircraft grade 8 fasteners used in the front suspension. All gauges were rebuilt. Vintage Vilem B Haan steering wheel. Vintage Talbot racing fender mirrors. The car has a 5 speed heavy duty (cast iron case) close ratio (Sierra) gearbox. Gearing approximates factory close ratio gears. Light flywheel with a Tilton Rally clutch. Engine (factory replacement block ID number) ( over bored .030) balanced and rebuilt with high performance lightened rods, billet crankshaft, JE high compression pistons (factory 9.9 compression ratio profile), slightly oversized valves (lightened tappets from Kent Cams running in a late sleeved head and Alfa shims) and mild race grind cams. Weber 42DCOE carbs on custom made intake manifold. 4.55:1 rear axle ratio and panhard bar. Car has been lowered 1” using lowering blocks in the rear and the spring pans were deepened 1” in the front. There are also ride height adjusters in the upper front spring holders. Engine was run on an engine dyno and produced 142hp with the Webers carbs. The engine revs very easily to 7,000 rpms. Custom deepened and baffled steel oil pan holds 7+ quarts. Factory installed oil cooler. Stock headers and down pipe Jet Hot coated. Spiral muffler installed to slightly quiet exhaust. MGB front suspension and calipers for strength and increased brake pad size (MGB-V8 pads-5.4” surface area instead of 4”). All new brake lines and fittings. Sleeved original brake cylinder with original cap. Sleeved clutch master cylinder. Brake discs cryogenically treated for durability. Adjustable lever shocks on all corners. Rims shown are 5” wide and are chrome plated (the 4" wide spare tire stock rim is painted). 5” wide powder coated rims (with a 5" wide powder coated spare tire rim) or 4” wide painted stock rims (with a 4" wide painted stock rim for the spare) can be substituted. The car was originally sold through the “Wacky” Arnoldt dealership in Chicago. Arnoldt usually ordered Twin Cams from the factory with all competition equipment. In the car’s past, inspection openings were made for the distributor and the carbs. These inspection openings were left in place during the restoration but cleaned up and covered with removable aluminum panels held in place by dzus fasteners. Easily removable powder coated roll bar. Fire suppression system installed. Front and rear bumpers, front valance, heater, oil pan and original front calipers and king pins go with the car. Participated in the August 2011 Monterey historic races and the September 2012 Coronado (San Diego) Speed Weeks. Yes, I know the grill is for a MKII! The car was restored to be used without worry of how hard or where it was being used and represents knowledge from 35+ years of MGA Twin Cam ownership and 30+ years of vintage racing at the Monterey historic auto races, the granddaddy and, (some would argue) the most exclusive of all vintage auto races. References will be provided upon request. Very reasonable price. Reasonable offers will be considered. California titled and currently licensed. Additional photos and information provided upon request.
The final auction price paid by the buyer includes FREE professional enclosed shipping anywhere in the Continental US. Will consider shipping out of the USA but any fees and or duties and overseas shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer and must be discussed prior to conclusion of auction.
