1959 Mga 1500 on 2040-cars
Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, United States
The car had a complete restoration in
1988 in Ohio and is still beautiful! As the car was being completed, it was part of a story in the
December 1988 ImportCar & Track magazine. After completion of the
restoration, the owner went on to show the vehicle on what seems to have been
a mission to get a first place at the Stan Hywet Classic Car show in OH (which I believe is now a Concours event). It seems he was pretty successful on the show circuit
for just short of a decade which is when there is a bit of a gap pertaining to
my knowledge on the history of the vehicle. Here's some of the award history
for the car:
Third Place: Stan Hywet Classic Auto
NORCCCA 1989 Other Awards:
First Place 1991: British Cars at
Hartwood - British Cars of Pittsburgh The vehicle is registered with NAMGAR (North American MGA Register). Prior to the restoration in the late '80's, the car was white (this is also consistent with the body tag #'s). I attached photos of the car prior to it being restored and you will see that it even looked nice back then. Prior to me becoming the owner/caretaker of the car, it was owned by a gentleman who's goal was to have the car as a reliable Sunday driver. I have over $14,000 in receipts for service and work that has been done over the past ten years or so. Needless to say, there is not much left to do other than enjoy this car. This car has proven to be very reliable and very fun to drive and if my wife had her way, I would not even be typing this email. Here are some of the many items that have been done already:
2013 - Complete brake overhaul, new carpet and detailing, headers and free flow exhaust w/stainless muffler 2011 - Alternator conversion for reliability (original generator
available), front disc brake upgrade 2010 - Rebuilt 1800 cc Engine, clutch, exhaust header, new gas tank 2009 - Rebuilt Transmission, shocks & many misc. items 2008 - Fuel pump 2007 - Wiring misc. 2003 - carbs and refinish Much of this work was completed by a very reputable MG shop near Milwaukee, WI that focuses their entire business on MGs. Based on conversations I had with them this summer, they indicate 'that car needs nothing but to be enjoyed'. Known issues: There is a hairline crack in the paint on the driver's door that will need to be addressed. This can be addressed prior to delivery with a Buy-it-now. I consider this a car to be a very high end driver that draws a lot of attention anywhere you go. As the cars sits now, I feel it is between a #2 and #3 car and would take very little to get it close to the very top end of a condition 3 vehicle. Hagerty prices for a Condition #3 1959 MGA 1500 Roadster is $21,000 and a condition #2 is $36,800. If you are not familiar with Hagerty's tool, check them out at Hagerty.com. The car comes with the
tonneau, an original convertible top (which is tucked away behind the seat) and
side curtains. I have only had the top up on one occasion and that was just
to try it out (and then it was tucked back behind the seat). I have not
attempted to install the side curtains because I have the wind wings installed on
both sides which would interfere with the curtains if not removed. It also
comes with five knockoff wire wheels, the original British radio (although you may noticed, I have a
radio delete plate installed), a car cover, many of the original parts
(generator, carbs, etc.), a big box of silver bowl trophies, a stack of plaques
and a few specialty tools. Well over 100 photos are available here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oza1hxpqlwrkxc3/jbkz9xvpLt
