1980 Lotus Eclat V8 No Reserve Auction on 2040-cars

Introduced in late 1975 a year after the polarizing Elite, the Eclat was designed to be a sportier version with a lower price point. Within a few years it had become the preferred version and it superseded the Elite completely. It was far better looking and was soon appointed the same way as the supposedly more upmarket Elite. This Lotus Eclat VIN #80010140U is one of only 20 imported to the USA in 1980. Rolls Royce the importer for Lotus in the USA in that year didn’t even sell all of them due to its $30,600 sticker price. It is also truly an example of the era that still turns heads with the undeniable look & sound of an ‘80’s supercar, bearing a strong resemblance to a Ferrari 308 GT4. The Eclat is perhaps the least common of any Lotus today with fewer than 500 ever imported during its eight year production run. This car’s original four cylinder engine was replaced after a stuck throttle grenaded it. As the engine bay was originally designed to take a doubled version of that engine, a Rover 3.9 V8 fit perfectly and actually weighed just over 30 pounds more than the four. It cruises well at 80 and gets there fast. A true long distance GT, I drove it from New Hampshire where I bought it, to my home through 14 states the first week of September 2012 and averaged over 22 miles per gallon! The car sounds like a NASCAR stocker and pulls as strongly as it sounds. It cruised at about 2,650 rpm in 5th at 80mph and has plenty of grunt to accelerate at that speed. It handles like a Lotus should, and it rides and drives comfortably and straight; as I said, it is a great road car. I am selling it now because I have moved to a new home and lost my ample storage. I only have room for my Seven and Elans. When I bought it I was impressed with the story told by the seller and thought it would be the perfect counterpoint to my older smaller Lotus cars. The reality is I haven’t driven it much and so with no storage space it is the one that has to go. Here is the seller’s story from the summer of 2012: “This car has been a labor of love over the last ten years. I am truly hoping the car will be purchased by someone who will cherish her as much as I have, and will be able to complete the small issues that will make her perfect. I have only put about 5200 miles on the car since its conversion, and have no idea how many miles were originally on the car since the odometer was not functioning when I got it. In the last ten years I have spent over $25,000.00 on upgrades. The Rover V8's torque is a vast improvement over the original Lotus slant four. I spent over $5,000.00 on the engine rebuild alone (not including the installation). The engine uses an Isky 621282 Cam, and Edelbrock 500 CFM Carb mounted on a Buick 215 four barrel intake manifold. The TKO 600 five speed transmission was over $2,000.00, not including the addition of the required electronic Speedometer to match it. I have replaced the fragile clutch cable with a hydraulic system, using a master cylinder mounted to a high performance floor mounted clutch pedal. The ignition uses an MSD 6 AL box, MSD Coil, Pertronix PE D175510 distributor, high performance cables, and an Optima red top battery (mounted in the trunk). The new exhaust includes stainless Magnaflow mufflers, and chrome tips. The V8 conversion was originally performed by George Squire, of "Former Glory Racing" in Connecticut, and additional upgrades were done by "Mom's Garage" in Manchester NH. The suspension includes Spax adjustable Coil-Over Shocks, and all new bushings. There are also four new Falken Ziex ZE-512 tires on the car.” That’s the story that sold me and I really have enjoyed the power and cruising ability of the car. Now for the not so good news:
Even with these shortcomings the car is still very usable and all these things are repairable by a good home mechanic except possibly for the A/C issue. The extra parts I am including are: Lotus Eclat shop manual, second set of original Lotus rims, Eclat Windshield, extra low profile air filter, used power steering rack (in the brown paper in the boot for buyer to have rebuilt), and brand new bumper covers, miscellaneous small parts including dash switches, and gauges, touch up paint, and extra leather dye. The car is being offered with the parts included. These parts are worth over $2,000.00 together and I have no interest in selling them separately as I know the car needs them. This car is a great deal for anyone who is mechanical and has time to work on it. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it back across the country today. |

Lotus drops Renault for Mercedes F1 engines
Tue, 08 Jul 2014With only three manufacturers supplying engines in Formula One this season, the teams have been fairly evenly split: Ferrari, Sauber and Marussia use Ferrari engines; Mercedes, McLaren, Williams and Force India run on Mercedes power; Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Lotus and Caterham employ Renault power units. But one important team is reportedly preparing to ditch Renault and switch to Mercedes for next year.
That team is Lotus, an outfit which has fallen off its pace the past few seasons but which has still been a vital partner for Renault. That's because until a few seasons ago, the team based in Enstone, UK, was owned by Renault and bore the company's name. The operation was founded in 1981 as Toleman, was rechristened Benetton in 1986, bought by Renault 2000, taking the company's name in 2002, sold to its current owners Genii Capital 2009 and adopting the black and gold Lotus livery in 2011. As Benetton, it ran Ford engines until switching to Renault in 1995, sticking with the French outfit ever since, but that decades-long partnership - which meandered through Renault ownership and back out again - is now apparently drawing to a close.
The departure of Lotus as a customer team ought to allow Renault to focus instead on its increasing ties with Red Bull, which has taken the Enstone team's place as Renault's principal team. It could prove a smart move for the Lotus team as well, as the Mercedes engines have been outperforming the Renault units this season by an order of magnitude: not only is Mercedes far outpacing Red Bull at the top of the standings, but each of Mercedes' customer teams is performing better than Renault's clients.
Lotus builds the final Elise, Exige and Evora
Thu, Dec 23 2021Lotus has closed one of the most important chapters of its history: It has ended production of the Elise after a 25-year run. It also built the final example of the Exige, which was closely related to the Elise, and of the Evora, which was bigger and more comfort-oriented. We knew that this day was right around the corner, Lotus announced Final Edition variants of the Elise and the Exige in February 2021, and the British company confirmed that it's keeping the very last examples of the three models for itself. Shown above, the last Elise is a Sport 240 Final Edition model in yellow. The last Exige is a Cup 430 Final Edition finished in British Racing Green, while the last Evora is a GT430 Sport model that wears Dark Metallic Gray paint. All three cars will join the carmaker's growing collection of heritage models. Lotus built 51,738 examples of the Elise, the Exige, and the Evora combined over the past quarter of a century. While that doesn't sound like much, not when Ford sold over 787,000 units of the F-Series in pandemic-ridden 2020, that figure represents nearly half of the cars Lotus has built since its inception. It's worth noting that this number doesn't include the Elise derivatives made for third-party companies; the original Tesla Roadster was built on an Elise-sourced chassis, and the Opel Speedster was developed and manufactured by Lotus. It sounds like the three nameplates have been consigned to the pantheon of automotive history — at least for now. Lotus isn't standing still, however. Funded by Volvo parent company Geely, it unveiled the Emira, a coupe powered by a mid-mounted engine, earlier in 2021, and it's planning to launch its first crossover in spring 2022. The soft-roader will be the first in a series of mass-produced electric models from the company. Looking much further ahead, Lotus will also release a sedan and an electric sports car developed jointly with Alpine.
Lotus proves it's alive and well by releasing its most powerful road-going car
Fri, Jul 26 2019The future hasn't always looked bright for Lotus, but the British company is skating on much thicker ice under Geely ownership now than it was in the middle of the 2010s. It continues to claw back from the brink by releasing a GT-badged evolution of the Evora that delivers a meaner punch than its predecessors, and comes with a list of options that nearly rivals Porsche's. The GT replaces the Sport 410 and the 400 variants of the Evora. Presented as the most powerful road-going Lotus ever sold in the United States, it's powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine supercharged to 416 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 317 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. Those figures allow it to hit 60 mph from a stop in a brisk 3.8 seconds, and reach a 188-mph top speed. It's still a little bit slower than the Evora GT430 released in 2017, but Lotus kept that model away from American roads. The Evora GT comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Enthusiasts not interested in using a clutch can select an automatic gearbox that they can leave in drive or shift manually with aluminum paddles mounted on the steering wheel. Torque goes up to 332 pound-feet when the six shifts through the optional automatic, but the Evora GT posts the same performance figures regardless of how many pedals are in its footwell. Lotus makes the Evora GT using carbon fiber to keep weight in check. Buyers can honor company founder Colin Chapman by adding lightness if they're willing to add dollars, too. Priced at $10,000, the Carbon Pack includes a roof panel, a tailgate, a front access panel, and a diffuser all made with carbon fiber. Ticking that box shaves 50 pounds; put another way, Lotus charges $200 per pound. Selecting the $8,000 titanium exhaust removes another 22 pounds. The Evora GT tips the scale at 3,104 pounds in its lightest configuration, but getting there requires paying for a Volkswagen Golf's worth of options. At least downforce comes standard, and the GT has more of it than its predecessors. The new GT designation doesn't bring significant exterior styling changes. It's the same story inside, where Lotus continues to offer the model as a strict two-seater, or with a pair of rear seats big enough for very, very small occupants. Every GT comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. On sale now, the 2020 Lotus Evora GT starts at $96,950. Deliveries will begin by the end of 2019.
