This is a classic British Lotus Elan +2 that is in great condition and completely drivable. It looks great, runs and drives great, has a fabulous interior and is generally in very good condition. This Lotus twin cam engine is the desirable Weber head with 2 DCOE 40mm carburetors. This also means that this car doesn't have the slightly awkward looking square bulge on the bonnet that the later cars had to clear their Stromberg carbs.
The chassis is in excellent condition. I can't find any rust or problems at all other than minor surface rust. Underneath the car looks very clean. The glassfibre body is also in excellent condition with no signs of accident damage or repair. I was told it was re-sprayed around 12 years ago but then sat unattended for a long time. It has quite a few small chips and touch ups in the paint, There is one large chip (about 1 1/2") just ahead of the boot where I'm told something fell on it while it was stored. Also there is a couple odd discoloured spots on the left front wing (see picture). Despite the flaws the car shines nice and still looks terrific. The re-paint was very thorough and under the hood looks very clean and nice and the door jambs are also very clean. The Glass is all excellent, all the seals are nice. The doors fit great and don't droop. The chrome front bumper is very nice but the rear has some flaking and rust spots. The Tyres are brand new Fisk classics. it has a good spare and the special tool needed for the center hub nut. The vacuum operated headlamps work great and this car uses vacuum to raise the lamps rather than the other way around like the later cars. The benefit being that the lamps stay down when the car is parked. Inside the boot (trunk) is very clean with all its carpet and plywood sub floor intact. The Interior is excellent. The wood dash is amazingly nice. This car has the nice early style dash with toggle switches rather than the federally imposed rocker switches. The dash top and trim pieces are all present and in great condition. The seats are all excellent front and back. The front seats are the earlier low back seats which means unlike the later style they can tilt forward without hitting the ceiling and you can actually get in the back. The carpets are great. The headliner too is excellent as are the door panels. The seat belts have been updated to something more modern and work perfect and are quite comfortable. It's missing the lenses for the two rear interior lamps but they do work. All the gauges and warning lamps work and amazingly it still has its original radio that still works! It also still has its original Colin Chapman signature steering wheel in beautiful condition. The heater controls all work perfect and this car has astoundingly good heat and defrost. The suspension is excellent. The steering is tight and precise. The brakes work perfect. The brake booster has been removed but this lightweight car really doesn't need it. This car has single circuit brakes so it only had one booster. The engine has good power and runs very nice. It idles nice and smooth. The cooling system works excellent and it has the early wider radiator (later cars rad is much smaller). The water pump was recently rebuilt (a common problem and a big job on the twin cam) It doesn't leak any fluids but it does burn a little oil and occasionally is a bit smokey usually when cold or when accelerating away hard from a stop. Twin cams have a reputation for this. It isn't terrible but it isn't perfect either. The oil pressure is great. The clutch is a bit abrupt to release but works great, just takes a bit of getting used to. The 4 speed gearbox is absolutely excellent with no issues at all. There are no drips or problems from the differential. The rubber donuts (rotoflex couplings) in the rear axles look a bit old but still function well. It can be a bit cold blooded to start on cold days but not hard once you learn the routine. It does have working chokes. The exhaust is in great shape, It has a sporty sounding glass pack muffler that some might find too loud but can easily be replaced. The 12V negative earth electrics are in very good order. All the lights, wipers, horn and even the glove box light works! The charging system has been upgraded to a modern internally regulated and cheap to replace GM alternator. It is not currently licensed but it does come with a clear title. Overall this is a great car in very good condition. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. If you'd like to chat on the phone send me a message and I'll give you my number. I highly recommend and encourage a personal inspection if possible. The Elan can be viewed by appointment in Granite Falls WA (near Seattle). Buyer is responsible for shipping costs and arrangements. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Lotus Exige S gets automatic transmission option
Sun, 26 Oct 2014A vehicle as light and agile as the Lotus Exige is all about driver involvement, but those enticed by the nimble sports car's handling and performance who aren't keen on working a stick shift now have another option at their disposal.
Lotus has just announced the availability of an automatic transmission on both the Exige S and Exige S Roadster. For an extra couple thousand euros or pounds sterling, customers will now be able to order a six-speed automatic transmission. The two-pedal setup includes paddle shifters and Sport or Race modes that optimize shifting for "a more spirited drive."
Equipped with the slushbox, the Exige S Automatic is just as quick around Lotus' famous factory test track in Hethel, and even pips the manual version's 0-62 time by 0.1 second, now down to 3.9. Unfortunately, since the Exige isn't available Stateside anymore, however, American buyers can't get their hands on either version.
Lotus Emira V6 First Edition finally being delivered to customers
Wed, Mar 13 2024In July 2021, Lotus revealed the Emira, its final ICE-powered sports car before flipping to an all-electric lineup. By the time we got to drive it in December 2023, our Zac Palmer wrote, "you can’t spend $105,900 on a single car that would be more fun than the V6 First Edition I drove. There just isnÂ’t another option out there that drives like the Emira, putting it in a class of its own for the enthusiast who wants the most unfiltered experience possible." The problem for Emira buyers reading that — the ones sitting on reservations more than two years old — was that none of them had their cars. Last March, Gator Motorsports' franchise Indy Lotus in Indianapolis sent a letter to reservation holders explaining the holdup as U.S. certification, specifically certification by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). At the same time, CarBuzz reported that Emira V6 First Edition units destined for the U.S. would land here last summer but wouldn't be released to customers until between mid-October and mid-December. Except Lotus dealers then had to explain to buyers in January of this year that cars here were getting a software update, likely for certification purposes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had given the Emira its blessing, but Lotus didn't want to deliver units that couldn't be registered in the 14 states that adhere to CARB mandates, so it held all of them (and perhaps prevented some car-flipping). At the end of last month, the Californians approved of what Lotus had done with its engine programming, freeing the Emira to head to good homes. At one point, Lotus planned to have cars here in time to get into the 2022 model year, now it's a 2024. On the Emira Forum, in a thread about USA and Canadian delivery that's grown to more than 500 pages, someone posted the CARB approval on March 2, page 461 of the thread. The first response from a forum member in Stage 4 of the Five Stages of Grief — mentioned just four posts earlier — was, "Is this legit? This isn't something you did as a joke on the forum?" It's no joke, other forum posters are reporting that they are receiving their cars. Nay, twas not a joke. What's also serious is a higher price for the eventual entry-level trim, the Emira First Edition powered by an AMG-sourced turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.
Radford Type 62-2 is rad, a coachbuilt sports car based on Lotus underpinnings
Mon, Aug 9 2021There’s a new coachbuilder out there, and the company calls itself Radford. Today, Radford revealed its first car — the Type 62-2 — and itÂ’s based on the chassis and underpinnings of the Lotus Evora. ThatÂ’s an extremely good place to begin building from. Plus, the company has some big names attached to it. F1 racer Jenson Button is the one who dialed in the carÂ’s driving dynamics. Mark Stubbs, formerly of Bentley, Bugatti, Aston Martin and more, led the design process. And Ant Anstead, now co-hosting "Wheeler Dealers," is handling the build/production work. There may be an Evora underneath all the new bodywork, but this vehicle doesnÂ’t look like one on the outside. Instead, itÂ’s meant to take after the original Lotus Type 62 race car. Take one quick look at both, and it appears as though Radford has done a standup job of getting it there. ItÂ’s even been revealed initially in livery worn by the old Type 62. WeÂ’ll note that there will be two cars with slightly different looks. The first is a “Classic” version without a wing and fitted with staggered 17/18-inch wheels. The other model is called “Gold Leaf,” and it has the Type 62Â’s wings, can be done in the livery you see here and features larger center-locking 18/19-inch wheels. Thanks to the aluminum-intensive structure of the Evora, the Radford Type 62-2 weighs just under 2,205 pounds. Radford saved additional weight by using all carbon fiber body panels. This lightweight body is propelled forward via the 3.5-liter Toyota-provided supercharged V6 used in the Evora. Its base tune in the Type 62-2 offers up 430 horsepower. However, upgrading from the Classic to the Gold Leaf brings an increase to 500 horsepower. Radford says it gets the extra power via upgraded pistons, connecting rods, camshafts and new electronic engine mapping. If you want the extra power in the Classic, Radford says you can still optionally have it. As you may already suspect, a six-speed manual transmission is available on the Type 62-2. Unlike the Evora, though, you can also spec a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. ItÂ’s the only transmission available if you spec the engine up to 500 horsepower, so pick your poison on that front — thereÂ’s no manual available for the high-power version. As for the suspension, Radford says itÂ’s lowered the car more and changed the suspension geometry a bit compared to the standard Lotus design — thanks, Jenson.
