This is a classic British Lotus Elan +2 that is in great condition and completely drivable. It looks great, runs and drives great, has a fabulous interior and is generally in very good condition. This Lotus twin cam engine is the desirable Weber head with 2 DCOE 40mm carburetors. This also means that this car doesn't have the slightly awkward looking square bulge on the bonnet that the later cars had to clear their Stromberg carbs.
The chassis is in excellent condition. I can't find any rust or problems at all other than minor surface rust. Underneath the car looks very clean. The glassfibre body is also in excellent condition with no signs of accident damage or repair. I was told it was re-sprayed around 12 years ago but then sat unattended for a long time. It has quite a few small chips and touch ups in the paint, There is one large chip (about 1 1/2") just ahead of the boot where I'm told something fell on it while it was stored. Also there is a couple odd discoloured spots on the left front wing (see picture). Despite the flaws the car shines nice and still looks terrific. The re-paint was very thorough and under the hood looks very clean and nice and the door jambs are also very clean. The Glass is all excellent, all the seals are nice. The doors fit great and don't droop. The chrome front bumper is very nice but the rear has some flaking and rust spots. The Tyres are brand new Fisk classics. it has a good spare and the special tool needed for the center hub nut. The vacuum operated headlamps work great and this car uses vacuum to raise the lamps rather than the other way around like the later cars. The benefit being that the lamps stay down when the car is parked. Inside the boot (trunk) is very clean with all its carpet and plywood sub floor intact. The Interior is excellent. The wood dash is amazingly nice. This car has the nice early style dash with toggle switches rather than the federally imposed rocker switches. The dash top and trim pieces are all present and in great condition. The seats are all excellent front and back. The front seats are the earlier low back seats which means unlike the later style they can tilt forward without hitting the ceiling and you can actually get in the back. The carpets are great. The headliner too is excellent as are the door panels. The seat belts have been updated to something more modern and work perfect and are quite comfortable. It's missing the lenses for the two rear interior lamps but they do work. All the gauges and warning lamps work and amazingly it still has its original radio that still works! It also still has its original Colin Chapman signature steering wheel in beautiful condition. The heater controls all work perfect and this car has astoundingly good heat and defrost. The suspension is excellent. The steering is tight and precise. The brakes work perfect. The brake booster has been removed but this lightweight car really doesn't need it. This car has single circuit brakes so it only had one booster. The engine has good power and runs very nice. It idles nice and smooth. The cooling system works excellent and it has the early wider radiator (later cars rad is much smaller). The water pump was recently rebuilt (a common problem and a big job on the twin cam) It doesn't leak any fluids but it does burn a little oil and occasionally is a bit smokey usually when cold or when accelerating away hard from a stop. Twin cams have a reputation for this. It isn't terrible but it isn't perfect either. The oil pressure is great. The clutch is a bit abrupt to release but works great, just takes a bit of getting used to. The 4 speed gearbox is absolutely excellent with no issues at all. There are no drips or problems from the differential. The rubber donuts (rotoflex couplings) in the rear axles look a bit old but still function well. It can be a bit cold blooded to start on cold days but not hard once you learn the routine. It does have working chokes. The exhaust is in great shape, It has a sporty sounding glass pack muffler that some might find too loud but can easily be replaced. The 12V negative earth electrics are in very good order. All the lights, wipers, horn and even the glove box light works! The charging system has been upgraded to a modern internally regulated and cheap to replace GM alternator. It is not currently licensed but it does come with a clear title. Overall this is a great car in very good condition. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. If you'd like to chat on the phone send me a message and I'll give you my number. I highly recommend and encourage a personal inspection if possible. The Elan can be viewed by appointment in Granite Falls WA (near Seattle). Buyer is responsible for shipping costs and arrangements. I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Lotus Evora 400 arrives in December for $89,900
Mon, May 18 2015It's been three months to the day since Lotus revealed the new Evora 400. And if you've spent the intervening time pining and wondering just how much you'd need to set aside to put one in your driveway, you need wonder no longer. The British sports car manufacturer has just released pricing for the new-and-improved Evora 400, which will retail at Lotus showrooms in America for $89,900. Now that's a fair bit more than it was charging just last year for an Evora ($68,400) or the Evora S ($78,480), but for all that extra scratch, you get a lot more. The 400-horsepower model packs 55 more horses than the Evora S, weighs almost 50 pounds less, features a new diff, carbon-ceramic brakes, bodywork and interior, and benefits from returned electronics, suspension, gearbox, and more. (Buyers will also be able to opt for an automatic transmission, upgraded interior trim, appearance package, forged alloys and painted calipers, all at additional cost.) The result of all those upgrades – costly as they are – is a 0-60 time of just 4.1 seconds, a top speed of 186 miles per hour and a lap time around the company's test track at Hethel clocked at 1:32 – a full six seconds faster than the existing Evora S. If that sound enticing, North American deliveries are set to commence in December. The latest supercar from Lotus combines high performance with the legendary Lotus benchmark handling and is lighter, more efficient and dynamically better than ever, providing a purer driving experience. UK prices will start from GBP72,000 (for other markets, see table below). For this price the car benefits from a high level of standard specification including 370 mm composite two piece brake discs from AP Racing, a Limited Slip Differential, automatic air-conditioning and infotainment system including satellite navigation. In addition to this, the options list includes automatic transmission at GBP2,000, Alcantara or Leather trim upgrades at GBP2,500 and metallic paint at GBP900.
Lotus slated to stop selling Evora in US
Mon, 22 Sep 2014It's been three years now since Lotus stopped selling the Elise and Exige in North America, leaving the Evora as its only model available Stateside. But according to the latest from Car and Driver, even that model is on its way out.
The problem reportedly comes down to air bags. Lotus was granted a temporary exemption from fitting the latest-generation smart airbags to the Evora, but that exemption is set to expire at the end of the year. And once it does, Lotus apparently has no intention of developing and fitting the proper equipment to allow it to continue selling the Evora in the United States.
Once the Evora is gone from our market, Lotus will be reduced to selling only track-bound versions of the Elise and Exige in the US, so the prospect of actually buying a new Lotus and driving off the dealer lot will vanish into thin air.
Lotus Elise Sprint adds lightness to lightness
Fri, Mar 17 2017Lotus announced the introduction of a new Elise trim level that exemplifies founder Colin Chapman's famous phrase of "simplify and add lightness." The new Elise Sprint combines the weight savings of the current standard Elise, along with a number of Sprint-exclusive parts for what Lotus claims is the model's most significant weight loss yet of about 90 pounds over the old model, bringing the car's dry weight (not curb weight) to 1,759 pounds. The exclusive Sprint parts account for about 57 pounds of that loss. They include a lithium-ion battery, forged wheels, polycarbonate rear window, and carbon fiber for the seats, roll bar cover, engine cover, and access panel. Interestingly, the biggest savings come from the lithium-ion battery, which is roughly 20 pounds lighter than the normal battery. Lotus also includes the optional two-piece brake rotors and carbon fiber door sills to reach the 90 pound total. This all translates to slightly quicker 0-60 mph times for Elise Sprint models over their Sport counterparts. Both the 1.6-liter 134-horsepower Sprint and 1.8-liter 217-horsepower Sprint 220 models complete the run to 60 mph a tenth of a second quicker than the equivalent Sport versions, with times of 5.9 and 4.1 seconds respectively. The weight loss also results in a price gain. For either Sprint model, you'll end up paying an extra GBP5,000, which is a bit over $6,100 at current exchange rates. Of course, the Elise isn't available in the US anyway, so it's a moot point. Related Video:
