1977 Lotus Esprit Base Coupe 2-door 2.0l on 2040-cars
New Orleans, Louisiana, United States
Hand built in August 1977 and up for your consideration is number 390 of this iconic, storied automobile lineage. I purchased this car in Seattle from a Montana cowboy in about 1982. I am the third owner. It has never been in an accident of any kind. For the first 22 of our 32-year life together, the car was well maintained, driven daily, reliable despite it's reputation, and garage-stored, in Seattle, Malibu, South Mississippi and New Orleans.
In 2002, as I was selling my New Orleans house with a garage, I posted this Lotus on Ebay. I let the listing expire after I realized that the overheating problem I had recently experienced was a from blown head gasket. The headgasket was repaired in 2004, along with extraneous details to make the car ready for the auction blocks, which it was, but I wasn't. Delays, personal issues, time passed and the car sat outside. Then it had sat for too long, and it has been sitting ever since. The car was in perfect selling condition in 2004 but now it is a different story. It is non-functioning. Consider it a complete restoration inside and out after not having been driven in 11 years and setting outside. I have the (dusty) engine cover (in photos) the original jack and mechanic's pouch, original spare, original owners' manual. and special order MOMA Lotus steering wheel. Included in the sale are a portion of the parts manual, a too-large car cover, I have the original "Styled by Giugiaro" side emblem - that the car washers knocked off, and the book "Lotus Esprit" by Jeremy Walton. I'm in New Orleans, the car is available for viewing except June 18, 19 and 20, and there may be a delay answering questions on those days. Mississippi title and (expired) registration. Emissions device is missing from the car. Low starting price and no reserve. Please enlarge all photographs. Again, photographs are overly encouraging. The buyer is responsible for arranging pickup or shipping and cost thereof. I will assist the buyer any way I can. On Jun-14-14 at 20:05:25 PDT, seller added the following information: If the car is left uncovered, there is water infiltration during a rain. The carpet will be damp. The car is missing the chrome-like plastic pieces on each side of the roof, perhaps this is the culprit, or maybe there is a leak around the door gaskets. There is no visible mold but the seat rails are corroded and one is broken. |

Race Recap: 2013 Japanese Grand Prix flips several scripts [spoilers]
Mon, 14 Oct 2013Japan's Suzuka circuit is a great track that all the drivers love, but it doesn't usually provide the most thrilling, head-to-head racing. Where it does excel, however, is with surprises and "What just happened there?!" moments, and this year it was no different.
It started with Mark Webber in his Infiniti Red Bull Racing out-qualifying his teammate Sebastian Vettel for the first time this year. They were followed closely by Lewis Hamilton in the first Mercedes-AMG Petronas, the still-solid Romain Grosjean again outdoing teammate Kimi Räikkönen, Felipe Massa racing for another seat in Formula One and putting his Ferrari in fifth, then Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes, Nico Hülkenberg in the first Sauber, Fernando Alonso in the second Ferrari, and Räikkönen continuing to do himself no favors by qualifying tenth.
For the second year in a row, the lights going out was the cue to start the first corner action...
EVO "2012 Car of the Year: The Track Battles" is a sports car salmagundi
Sun, 25 Nov 2012EVO has come out with another gotta-watch-it video, throwing its 2012 Car of the Year contestants around the UK's 1.5-mile Blyton Park track. It's actually a 15-minute teaser for the full-length DVD detailing the magazine's Car of the Year selection, but the tease is worth every penny free second.
Tiff Needell and sports car racer Richard Meaden handle the wheel duties, the two driving five pairs of sports cars: Lotus Exige S vs. Porsche Boxster S, Morgan Three-Wheeler vs. Toyota GT86, BMW M135i vs. Porsche 911, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series vs. Alpina B3 GT3, the marquee event pits the McLaren MP4-12C vs. the Pagani Huayra. After a head-to-head lap with commentary during drifts, Meaden takes each car out to set a representative lap time.
You'll find the verdicts, lots of tire smoke, and lines like "Anything you can do sideways I can do sideways" in the video below.
Lotus won't rule out SUV, but first we'll get a new Elise
Fri, Aug 5 2016Not even Lotus can ignore the sales potential of SUVs. Speaking to media yesterday, Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales said "The SUV is an interesting market. We're working on a concept but haven't made a decision yet." Lotus has reorganized lately, and is cash flow neutral on a path to future profitability. Put away your pitchforks. Yes, Lotus is the last automaker we'd expect to make an SUV, but nearly every other carmaker has already given up resistance. And we surmise that even a Lotus SUV would follow the Lotus founder Colin Chapman's famous ethos of "Simplify, and add lightness." At least relatively. Or, as Gales put it, "We stick to our roots, because they are enviable roots." That means the new Elise, coming in 2020 and destined for America, will be a lot like the current model sold in other markets. As we reported last week, Gales confirmed that the next Elise will be slightly wider to accommodate side airbags, but otherwise will have similar dimensions and power-to-weight ratio. The Evora 400 Roadster is also still planned, but won't come stateside for at least two years. "Lotus will not fit electrical steering [systems]. They take away the steering feel." And while the SUV ship may sail, there are still a few heretical ideas left in Hethel. In confirming that the Elise will add assisted steering in the next generation, Gales assured us it would be hydraulic. "Lotus will not fit electrical steering [systems]. They take away the steering feel." Also off the table for Lotus is any kind of hybrid. Speaking to Autoblog, Gales explained that hybrid systems adds weight, complexity, and take up space. The first two items go against the core values at Lotus, and the third creates packaging issues. "Besides, when you have low mass it's easy to be efficient," the CEO said. He added that a pure EV might be something Lotus would consider, but not anytime in the near future. Lotus returns to the US this year with the Evora 400. Stay tuned for our first drive review in a couple of days (spoiler alert: the car is awesome). And beyond the Evora convertible and next Elise, Gales says "You will enjoy many more cars from our company." We can't wait.Related Video: Lotus Convertible Coupe SUV Performance lotus evora 400 jean-marc gales lotus evora 400 roadster
