The name George Hurst is well known to automotive enthusiasts. Father of the Hurst shifter and the innovative Jaws of Life rescue tool, his legacy is secure. And here's where that legacy started, the earliest known car that George Hurst converted, a 1946 Lincoln Continental convertible. The complete history on this unique automobile remains unknown, especially with regard to its first owner. What is known is it was one of 201 Lincoln Continental convertibles built in 1946 and was production number 9,747 of the 16,584 Lincolns built that year. Of historical note, the Lincoln Continental convertible was selected as the official pace car for the 1946 Indianapolis 500. While its original owner remains unknown, it is known that in 1956 Captain Smart, stationed at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station in Pennsylvania, asked George Hurst replace its prewar-designed 130-horsepower flathead V-12 with a modern overhead-valve Cadillac V-8 with 285-horsepower. In addition to the engine swap, Hurst modified and upgraded many
associated driveline components to handle the additional power, including the
motor mounts, another product that Hurst would become well known for in the
years that followed. Smart also requested George plate as much of the engine to
match his wife's copper bottom pots as possible. It is believed to be the only
automobile in history to have copper plated components. The current owner purchased this classic at the 2004 Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, from the estate of a wealthy businessman in Chicago. Its remarkable history was first discovered when the new owner discovered the plaque affixed to the radiator cover was covering the original plaque placed on the car by George Hurst, validating the conversion. Part of an extensive collection of vehicles from the period immediately following the end of the Second World War, it remains in the condition when it was acquired in 2004. With the recent passing of its owner, this "Grand Ol' Lady" is now being offered by his estate. "STREET ROD" She is Black with Ivory and Deep Red English Leather Interior. Chrome and tires are beautiful, no pits or dry rot. Research shows that the 1946 production year reaped only 201 Lincoln Continental Convertibles. The brass plaque on
the radiator cover documents the conversion done by George H Hurst.
Research has shown that Mr. Hurst only did two Lincoln Continental
conversions. The other one was a hard top. He won a trophy for “Best Conversion” in Dearborn, Michigan shortly after the modification. It still exists today and is owned by a man in Philadelphia, PA. He did the following modifications:

There were a total of 16,584 Lincolns built in 1946. This car was #9,747 off the production line with only 201 Continental Convertibles. The most exciting aspect about this beautiful Lincoln is that she fires up on command, drives like a dream and Screams as loud as you want her to by putting the pedal to the metal. But don't do that till she is yours. She is truly a spectacular investment!! There were very few of these cars made after WWII and there couldn't be but a few left. This being one of two George Hurst modified. This is the car featured in Richard Truesdale and Mark Fletcher’s,recently released book "Hurst Equipped" She certainly is a Grand Ol' Lady. McConaughey's bizarre new Continental ad is perfect parody material
Tue, Dec 20 2016So let's say you're running a car company and have a luxurious new flagship sedan and need to advertise it. What do you do? Did you answer with "film a commercial with a barely coherent Hollywood actor standing in a pond?" If so, perhaps you work for Lincoln, which brought back Matthew McConaughey to do another bizarre car ad. It starts with McConaughey and a Continental standing on a body of water. He starts talking about staring (or not staring) at the Conti, and then about sitting in the back seat (or not). The ad then cuts to McConaughey in the back who replies to the McConaughey in the front seat. Presumably, there are two McConaugheys at this point, and the front seat one just laughs in a slightly unsettling manner. He then makes a clicking noise, closes the center console and drives away. You can't make this stuff up. It's thoroughly strange, but we can't say we're entirely surprised. When Lincoln first launched some bizarre ads with McConaughey muttering sweet nothings about the MKC, the company got loads of attention. Admittedly a lot of that attention was to make fun of it, but you know the old saying that there's no such thing as bad press. Lincoln even brought him back for an encore in ads for the MKX and MKZ. In truth, we're also glad to see another bizarre Lincoln ad, mostly because we're hoping for another round of great parodies like the classic Jim Carrey spoof that aired on Saturday Night Live. Mon, Mar 30 2015Lincoln is making a huge splash in New York this week, rolling out the Continental Concept you see here. Not only does this bring back an iconic bit of Lincoln nomenclature (just as some competitors are making things more complicated), it previews the new Continental fullsize sedan that will come to market next year. This is "a concept which for us signals the future of what we call quiet luxury," Ford Motor Company president and CEO, Mark Fields, said during an event Sunday. "The Concept is a very strong hint – I'll underline very strong hint – as to what you'll see in the production vehicle." There's no other way to say it: the Continental looks stunning. It's a long, low-slung sedan, with a shape that's reminiscent of the Ford Interceptor Concept from 2007. But this thing is all Lincoln, and shows a host of new design cues that will no doubt work their way across the brand's range. Most notably, the split-wing grille is gone, with this new chrome centerpiece showing a "new face for Lincoln" (where have we heard that before?). The Continental also incorporates LED matrix headlamps, with laser-assist high-beams and tiny Lincoln logos embedded inside. For the doors, Lincoln uses "E-Latch" handles that tuck discretely into the Continental's beltine. The concept rolls on polished aluminum, 21-inch wheels with painted pockets. Up above, the Continental has a SPD SmartGlass tinting sunroof that can keep the interior up to 18 degrees cooler. Around back, the Continental has a wide, planted stance, with taillamps that stretch from side to side. These lamps have "light-through-chrome" technology, which means they have a chrome look when not illuminated. Rounding out the whole design are slim, wide exhaust outlets that look fantastic. The main focus of the Continental is luxury, and Lincoln says this car uses "the brand's most sensual materials ever." That includes Venetian leather seats and door panels, Alcantara on the seat inserts and armrests, a satin headliner and wool carpet. Lighting is also a key feature, with an ambient glow that radiates throughout the cabin and "soft-gold" LED lights in the center console. As for comfort, the Continental's 30-way seats are said to mold to passengers' sizes and shapes. Rear seat passengers have it best, though, with a two-seat layout, tray tables, a champagne storage compartment, and detachable, handmade Venetian leather travel cases.
High-tech, remote-controlled Golden Sahara II custom car going for auction
Mon, Mar 19 2018Imagine a vehicle with automatic braking, remote operation, self-opening doors and a big screen on the dash. You're probably imaging a Tesla Model X, but we're actually talking about a car called the Golden Sahara II, a custom car originally built in the 1950s, and it's going for auction at Mecum's event in Indianapolis. According to Mecum, this custom car started out as a 1953 Lincoln Capri owned by George Barris, the man who created the original Batmobile. He didn't have it long before it ended up in a crash that led him to use it for a major custom project. He teamed up James Skonzakes, known as Jim Street, to create and pay for the build. In 1954, the car was finished with wild body work, actual 24-karat gold-plated exterior trim and a pearlescent gold paint created from fish scales. In 1956, Street decided to invest a whole lot more into the car. He sent it to a shop in Dayton, Ohio where it was fitted with a myriad of high-tech features. These included a central control stick that could operate the throttle, steering and braking, push-button steering controls on the dashboard for both the driver and the passenger, a remote control for moving it slowly and for opening the doors. It had sonar antennae at the front for automatic braking, a TV in the center stack, a radio, a phone, and even a cocktail cabinet in the back and mink carpeting. All of these features were on display when Street appeared with the car on the TV show I've Got a Secret, seen above, as well as in a period news story in which Street's wife demonstrated the features including the light-up wheels and tires for turn signals. It was recently found in his garage, and the car will finally go for auction in May at Mecum's Indianapolis auction. The car will be sold in unrestored condition, which looks to be fairly rough, but savable. It appears the remotes are still there, too. The car will be auctioned with no reserve, so it will have a new owner.
