1956 Continental Mark Ii With Air Conditioning Ac, Restored on 2040-cars
Exeter, Rhode Island, United States
Nothing says "personal indulgence" like a big 2 door sport coupe!
This 1956 Continental Mark II received a complete restoration in 2002. The original engine was rebuilt from carburetor to oil pan, and runs strong: Compression: 140 +/- 10 PSI on all 8 cylinders Oil pressure: 40 PSI at idle, hot or cold No measurable oil consumption and never overheats. The 3 speed automatic transmission upshifts and downshifts smoothly just as it should, and the car rides smoothly with no odd noises. Odometer reads 3,694 miles, which I believe to be the mileage since restoration. Tires are proper sized, period correct, Remington "Cushion-Air" bias ply with 3" wide whitewall. Apparently new in 2002, with no leaks, no sidewall cracking and 90% tread life remaining. Glass is all very good, with no cracks, chips or delamination. All windows are factory tinted, as this is a factory AC car. Chrome trim is good to very good, with minor scuffing but no deep scratches or pitting. Top section of front and rear bumpers could stand to be rechromed. Stainless steel trim pieces are all in excellent condition. Exhaust is in good condition and correctly exits through the bumpers, which is rare on restored Mark II's. Frame is very solid with no rust issues. The floor pans were replaced with new metal as part of the restoration. The interior was redone in vinyl in a color scheme similar to the original interior. The vinyl has no rips or tears; however the color has faded somewhat as evident in the photos. It could be dyed, or better yet redone in leather. I have recently installed new Wilton wool carpet from Chester and Herod in both the cabin and trunk. Headliner is in excellent condition. The paint has a few minor chips but overall looks very nice with good gloss and luster. The worst spot is a small ding in the trunk hump, which you can see in the photos. Overall it looks quite good for a 12 year old paint job, the pictures are an accurate reflection of the car's appearance. The car was clearly stored inside in a well-protected environment. The original factory AC was upgraded in 2013 to 134a, with a new efficient rotary compressor and new receiver/dryer installed. The original compressor and hardware are included in the sale. However, the compressor would need to be rebuilt to use again. Gauges / tachometer / speedometer are fully functional, with exception of the fuel gauge which is intermittent. The trip odometer works well as a backup for tracking fuel usage. The clock works but has been disconnected to preserve the battery. The original Town and Country radio is present and unmodified, but is not operational. The hubcaps are from a '56 or '57 Lincoln Premiere. I do not have the correct Mark II hubcaps, however they are available from Mark II Enterprises, among others. To summarize, the NADA classification of "average retail value" is a very suiting description of this cars condition: "Average Retail Value: This vehicle would be in good condition overall. It could be an older restoration or a well-maintained original vehicle. Completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. A ‘20-footer’. " Title: I purchased this car in MA, and received a clear title with correct VIN. Rhode Island does not issue title for cars over 12 years old, so the buyer will receive proof of current registration in my name, bill of sale, and a certified affidavit from the State of RI DMV per RI General Law 31-3.1 re: non-issue of titles for cars over 12 years old. This is generally sufficient to obtain a title in your state. In some states a VIN verification is required (no issues). Please check your state laws before bidding. Any questions, please ask. I have owned this beauty since 2010 and have given her much love. We've enjoyed taking her to the beach and to numerous cruises and shows. A new project for the Mrs. beckons, and it is time to move on. C2549 needs some work to be a show winner once again, but overall she is a very presentable, well-sorted driver who gets constant compliments anywhere she goes. Please call me (Todd) at 401-295-2197 with any questions, or to schedule a checkout visit and test ride. Happy bidding, and if you win, "Congratulations, it's a work of art!" |

Lincoln hijacks Cadillac's 'Dare Greatly' tagline
Tue, Feb 24 2015Talk about comedy - not even 24 hours after Cadillac teased its CT6 while inviting us to "Dare Greatly" during the Oscars telecast, Lincoln was doing the same but on Google. An anonymous tipster informed us the day after the Oscars that typing "dare greatly" into Google returned two ads before the search results. When we checked it over the course of a few hours, the first ad was always for Cadillac and either read, "Cadillac - Dare Greatly - Only those who dare drive the world forward," or, "Cadillac - Dare Greatly - It's not the critic who counts, it's the man in the arena." (On a side note, come on, Cadillac - "the man in the arena?" Well. It's a quote. Suppose that's all right, then.) The second result was for Lincoln and read, "Dare Greatly - It's not about making a statement, it's about doing what you love," with the associated URL being www.lincoln.com/dare+greatly. The first time we clicked it, it went to the Lincoln homepage showing the 2015 MKZ Hybrid. The second time, we got a page saying that the Lincoln site wasn't available; the Lincoln site was fine, the link didn't work. There's no reference to the Google joke at the Lincoln site - this was just about getting eyeballs. The English have the perfect phrase for Lincoln's provocation: "You've got some cheek!" We think it cunning, dastardly, and funny, and there's no doubt it worked - they knew people would flock to search the term. One of our competitors, Autotrader, said that within an hour of the first of four Cadillac spots airing during the Oscars, car searches for Cadillac vehicles climbed 53 percent from pre-Academy Award coverage levels. Searches for Cadillac cars were up 120%, they said. If this is Round One of our homegrown scrappy old-timers going at it, we're all for it. NHTSA closes rollaway investigation into 1.56M Ford SUVs
Mon, 11 Mar 2013It's taken four years of study, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finally closed the books on its investigation into rollaway accusations surrounding 1.56-million Ford SUV models.
The probe, which centered on the 2002-2005 Ford Explorer, 2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2003-2005 Lincoln Aviator, ends without the federal agency calling for a recall. According to The Detroit News, the investigation was closed due to a "low number of complaints" - NHTSA documented 180 such complaints that resulted in 14 crashes and six minor injuries, but the number of incidents have been slowing. The suspected defect rate for the trucks' automatic transmissions was found to be 4.4 per 100,000 units, and the brake-shift interlock mechanism failure rate was judged to be even lower at 3.4 per 100k.
Report: Lincoln getting all of Mercury's ad dollars
Mon, 03 Jan 2011Now that the curtain has closed on Mercury, Ford Motor Company will redirect all of its marketing dollars for the oft-overlooked brand to the Blue Oval's luxury outpost, Lincoln. In speaking to Automotive News, the chairman of the Lincoln National Dealer Council, Bob Tasca, Jr., said, "You'll see a lot stronger presence in the advertising of Lincoln in 2011."
Lincoln spokesperson Christian Bokich reminded AN that the automaker is "preparing the way for seven new or significantly refreshed vehicles" that will be launched over the next four years, and the largest ad blitz in 2011 will focus on the refreshed MKX crossover, as well as the MKZ sedan and its hybrid counterpart. Following that, Lincoln has plans to launch a completely overhauled version of its Navigator SUV, an all-new C-segment vehicle and the overhauled 2013 MKZ, which Tasca says will be "strikingly different from its Ford Fusion sibling."
