The Lexus RX has been completely redesigned for 2007, with a sleeker look, a more opulent interior, improved ride and handling, and some standout technology features, but the big news is more power. The new, 270-horsepower, 3.5L all-aluminum V6 in the RX 350 has 47 horsepower more than last year's engine and can launch the RX to 60 mph in only 7.3 seconds with front-wheel drive, 7.4 seconds with all-wheel drive. The engine has dual variable valve timing with intelligence and an electronic throttle control, to optimize responsiveness and efficiency at all engine speeds. A five-speed automatic is the only transmission offered, and with it the RX 350 gets the best-in-class fuel economy, according to Lexus, with EPA ratings of 20 city, 25 highway and also a clean-air ULEV II emissions certification. The RX 350 comes with standard stability control and anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist. The RX's standard safety equipment includes front seat-mounted side air bags, side-curtain bags with a rollover sensor, and a driver's knee bag. It comes very well equipped as a luxury vehicle, with standard features like dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats, wood and leather trim, a power liftgate, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The interior seats five, and the back seat is split 40/20/40 for flexible cargo arrangements and it can also be reclined. Key options on the RX include high-intensity discharge headlamps, a power tilt/telescopic steering wheel with memory, leather seat trim, an illuminated entry system, a multi-panel moonroof, 18-inch wheels, and an 11-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Audio System with 210 watts and a six-disc CD/DVD changer.

8 things you should know about the Lexus LC 500h powertrain
Thu, Feb 18 2016Lexus unveiled the LC 500h today in The Netherlands, and I got to take a look inside its new hybrid system. On one hand it seems like a box of magic – it combines two seemingly incompatible transmission types into one package. But that's also the ingenious simplicity of the thing. We don't have all of the details on how it all works yet, but here's a rundown of the high points.Efficient business in front, low-key party in the back. What makes it all work is the mullet of transmissions. For the new hybrid transmission, Lexus used the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive/Lexus Hybrid System – which consists of an e-CVT with a planetary gearset and two electric motors (one for charging the battery, the other for motivation and regen) – and grafted a conventional four-speed automatic onto the back. The two units actually coexist in one package, with the e-CVT making things efficient and the automatic expanding the capabilities. So at the low end, the system can deliver more torque, and the engine can also run at lower rpm on the highway. It's all thanks to those fixed gear ratios, and it's surprisingly simple.Except it's not that simple. This is where the virtual gear ratios come in. Like current Lexus hybrids, the system has ratios it can call up with the e-CVT. In this case, there are six virtual ratios to complement the four real physical ratios, for a total of 10 "gears" at the transmission's disposal. (Not coincidentally, the V8 LC 500 coupe has a 10-speed automatic.) One of the four fixed gears is always engaged when the car is moving, so the 10 ratios come about from combinations of what the e-CVT in front and the automatic in the back are doing. In other words, all 10 ratios are variations on the four fixed gear ratios, which means that all 10 gears could be considered virtual. It won't use all the gears all the time. In Eco mode, the car will start off on electric power and skip the first couple of "gears." When it's set to Sport or Sport +, the engine will be engaged from a stop and the transmission will select the lowest ratio. The sportier modes will also ignore the top couple of gear ratios. It can drive faster with the engine off. In a Lexus GS 450h with the Lexus Hybrid System, for example, at speeds above 62 mph or so the engine has to start up. This is because something needs to take up some slack from the battery-charging motor-generator or else it will start spinning too quickly.
Lexus flagship spotted testing in the desert
Wed, Jul 27 2016Most of the Lexus line-up has been updated with the company's unique design language. Whether you love it or hate it, most of the company's cars are impossible to confuse for something else. But during this time of transformation, the flagship LS sedan has lingered with a very mild, sedate shape. These spy photos show the LS has gone under the knife. That being said, we can't really say how different the LS is going to look for sure because Lexus has employed some impressive camouflage. If we didn't know better we'd say it looks like the LS is going retro with round reflector headlights and some rear tailfins. But we do know better, so don't look for those features to make it to the production model. What we can make out is the lower half of the Lexus "spindle" grille. The camouflage wrapping is pressed up against a trapezoidal shape at the front reminiscent of what we've seen on other Lexus models. It looks like a large version of it as well. This Lexus seems to still be quite long, and based on where the rear passenger is in the photos, it still seems to have loads of space for rear passengers. It's difficult to tell if this is a long wheelbase model or a standard one, but if it is long wheelbase, it's proportioned quite nicely. It looks like there will be quite a large C-pillar on this LS too. Our spy photographer expects this car to be revealed next year as a 2018 model available with a V8 and possibly a hydrogen powertrain. So if you want one of the last low-key LS models, you'll want to get the current version because its days are numbered. Related Video:
Toyota fills in details about its future design direction and global platform
Fri, 25 Oct 2013
"In the future, out of 100 customers, we want to excite ten of them instead of not offending all 100."
Almost all of the details about the Toyota New Group Architecture (TNGA) strategy have come out since the initiative was first reported on in March of this year, but Autoblog did learn a few new things about it on a recent trip to Japan. Probably the second-most important detail is that each new segment platform will be based around a common hip point to create an "optimal driving position architecture."
