Model Overview
Whether in standard-length (LS 460) or long-wheelbase (LS 460 L) form, the LS 460 is powered by a 4.6-liter V8, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. In rear-wheel-drive cars, it delivers 380 hp, while all-wheel-drive models put out 357 hp.The V8 has sophisticated technology, including electrically operated variable valve timing, dual fuel injection and a high 11.8:1 compression ratio. Altogether the engine lives up to its reputation for smoothness and thanks to the almost seamless operation of the buttery 8-speed automatic transmission, it can rush up to speed with little fuss or fanfare. 60 mph comes in just 5.4 seconds for rear-wheel-drive models, yet it is also capable of a quite reasonable EPA highway rating of 24 mpg. The all-wheel-drive system on the LS 460 is offered on either version and utilizes a Torsen limited-slip differential to send more power to the front wheels when needed; the system defaults to sending 60 percent of torque to the rear wheels in normal conditions. The LS 460 feels elegant, luxurious and fast--yet it's among the quietest, most comfortable cars of any price thanks to meticulous attention to sound insulation and acoustic side glass. Little if any road or wind noise makes it into the cabin at freeway speeds and the engine settles to a distant purr. The LS 460's interior has a soft, rich appearance that was benchmarked with private jet cabins; it's conservative, yet impressive in the details. The instrument panel has a simple two-tier appearance, accented with grain-matched wood trim, and the seats are upholstered in soft, supple leather.Standard-length LS 460 models have plenty of back-seat space, but for those wanting even more space without concerns about whether they're going to fit in the garage, the LS 460 L adds nearly five inches of overall length, which translates to that much extra legroom for the back seat. Executives and VIPs will want to get the Executive Class Seating Package, with a host of extra features but most notably a right rear ottoman-type seat with leg rest. The seat can recline up to 45 degrees and has upper-back adjustment and a massage function. What's more, the package includes an infrared sensor for the climate control that actually measures surface body temperatures and adjusts accordingly. The new LS 460 Sport adds an aggressive edge to the big Lexus, with Brembo brakes, 19-in split-10-spoke forged alloy wheels, a sport-tuned air suspension, special exterior body and interior upholstery treatments and sport front seats. The safety features offered in the LS 460 are arguably at the leading edge of automotive technology. Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) is a standard feature on the LS and is a step better than typical electronic stability control because it integrates the electronic power steering, electronically controlled brakes, throttle and anti-lock brake systems to react much faster and less abruptly to any impending loss of control. A Pre-Collision System is available on the LS; it uses inputs from the included dynamic radar cruise control to ready safety systems if an impact is expected. The Adaptive Front lighting system is another nifty feature that helps illuminate into a corner, angling with the steering wheel; front side airbags, front and rear side-curtain bags, dual front knee bags are also included--as is a first-aid kit.In addition to a full roster of luxury-car features, including a hard-drive navigation system with music storage and Bluetooth interface, another gee-whiz offering on the LS 460 is the optional Advanced Parking Guidance System helps with either parallel or back-in parking by actually steering into the parking space--using the backup camera and sonar parking sensors--while the driver modulates speed with the brake pedal.                                                                                                                                                                                                                       Bid only if you are serious about buying the vehicle.  Buyer is responsible for delivery. Toyota recalling 20k 2014 and 2015 cars and CUVs with 3.5L engines

Thu, 18 Sep 2014

Toyota has announced a recall of roughly 20,000 vehicles covering the 2014 Avalon, Camry, Highlander (pictured) and Sienna, as well as the 2015 Lexus RX luxury crossover. The affected vehicles are all powered the 2GR-FE engine, which in layman's terms, is Toyota's well-regarded 3.5-liter V6.
According to Toyota's statement, a parts supplier might not have welded "the end cap on the right-hand fuel delivery pipe in the engine compartment" correctly, meaning fuel could leak. Leaking fuel, of course, increases the chance of an engine fire. That said, no fires, crashes or injuries have been reported due to the issue.
Owners will be notified to report to dealers, where techs will check the fuel delivery pipe and fit a replacement part as necessary.

2014 Lexus IS 250 AWD F Sport

Fri, 08 Nov 2013

"Ooh, this looks fun!" my otherwise car-ignorant friend said as we walked up to the 2014 Lexus IS 250 F Sport. And yeah, it does look fun. In fact, despite my initial strong negative reaction to the design, I've really warmed up to this new IS, especially with the flashier F Sport package found on this test car (unique front fascia, 18-inch dark alloy wheels and appropriate badging). Even though that rear end still looks a bit Droopy Dog to me (stop frowning, Lexus), the IS is sharp, though I'm not entirely sure that such a bold design will age well.
"Looks can be deceiving," I told my friend, and we hit the road... slowly. You see, despite looking like a fresh, modern sport sedan, the IS 250 still uses what is, quite frankly, a dog of an engine. And that, combined with dynamics that are just so-so at best, makes for a sedan that's all show and no go. Say hello to Jennifer Slowpez.

2015 Lexus RC F Review

Wed, Aug 26 2015

Every year, thousands of people buy two-door coupes that bear the badges of BMW M, Mercedes-AMG, Audi RS, and Cadillac V. These cars are powerful, fast, agile, and - if you believe the marketing - are made to kick ass on the track. But, and this is just my theory, only about 0.2 percent of these owners actually drive their cars the way the companies intended. Most buyers, I think, want the image put forth by an M4 or C63 AMG more than any dynamic abilities. These people just want to give the impression that they're out tearing up the local road course, and a $70,000 sports coupe and a pair of Pilotis are just the ticket. Which is not to say they don't use the performance of these cars, just not the full track-day capabilities. If this describes you, I recommend checking out the new Lexus RC F. This coupe is powered by a 5.0-liter V8, complete with 467 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque. These figures, while impressive in a vacuum, are troubling when viewed alongside the competition. The Mercedes-AMG C63 tops 500 in horsepower and torque in S guise, while the six-pot Cadillac ATS-V is nearly equal on power but offers almost 60 more pound-feet of torque. And while the BMW M4 cedes more than 40 horsepower to the Lexus, the RC F doesn't feel as potent from the driver's seat. The RC F doesn't even feel as potent as less-powerful competition. This numerical deficit translates to the stopwatch, where the RC F lags behind the force-induced competition. The C63 and ATS-V both hit 60 in 3.9 seconds, while the BMW takes 4.1 seconds (these are all manufacturer estimates, by the way). The RC F needs 4.4 seconds to hit 60 miles per hour. The only vehicle in this segment that's slower is the Audi RS 5, and that's been on sale longer than all its current competitors combined. And the Audi's charms (oh, that glorious engine note) help you overlook its lack of pace. The RC F doesn't have the aging Audi's charisma, making its lack of both perceived and actual pace more glaring. I'm placing blame on this car's overbearing induction sound. It was a neat trick on the original IS F – this car's predecessor – but over the years it's just become kind of played out. At the least the noise is real, piped into the cabin via a resonator, but it sounds too artificial. And the point at which it kicks in is entirely predictable. Neither of these traits contribute to an involving driving experience.
