Lexus crafts working IS sedan out of cardboard [w/video]

People make model cars out of all sorts of material: wood, plastic, metal... and sure, even cardboard. What sets this one apart is that it's built to scale – as in, full scale – and what's more is that it can actually be driven. Then again, we couldn't vouch for its crashworthiness, so that might not be advisable. The replica Lexus IS sedan was commissioned by the Japanese automaker's UK office and made by two British workshops: Scales & Models and LaserCut Works. It's inspired by the Japanese art of origami and made out of cardboard, except for the working parts and the frame made of steel and aluminum. It's got a fully functional interior, opening doors, working headlights, rolling wheels, and an electric motor. The form is made up of cardboard 10 millimeters (0.4 inches) thick, provided by packaging company DS Smith. The material was laser-cut into 1,700 components, according to a 3D digital model provided by Lexus, and assembled by hand and painstakingly fixed into place by water-based wood glue that has to set for 10 minutes between each step. Little wonder that the whole project took three months to complete. The finished product will be on display at the NEC in Birmingham later this week during the Grand Designs Live Show. 2018 Lexus LC 500h is a wonderful mechanical mishmash

Lexus is following up on the Detroit debut of the LC 500 with a Geneva debut for a new hybrid model that, yes, has a four-speed automatic. We're still getting used to the idea, too. But as we've explained before, even with the old-school gearbox there's some real cutting edge stuff going on here. While the LC hybrid will have a four-speed auto, it will work in conjunction with an eCVT, a Lexus hybrid system, and possibly black magic. It's all very complicated – you can get particulars here – but it's best to think of the LC 500h's transmissions not as a CVT and a four-speed auto, but as a sort of ten-speed hybrid of the two, since both systems are always engaged. The hybrid system is much more familiar. There's a 3.5-liter V6, a battery pack, and two electric motors. Total system output is 354 ponies and Lexus claims the sprint to 60 mph will be done in under five seconds. For the record, the gas-only LC is projected to do the deed in around 4.5 seconds, so the hybrid shouldn't be a dramatic compromise in terms of performance. Of course, stats only tell so much. The ultimate question for the LC 500h is how its wild mix of transmissions, batteries, motors, and an engine will behave on the road. Lexus LF-C2 Concept shows polarizing looks are here to stay

Well, that's one question answered. When Lexus released the first teaser for its LF-C2 Concept, we figured it'd be one of two things - either it'd be a convertible based on the LF-LC Concept car or it'd be a thinly veiled concept version of the RC Convertible. Turns out, it's kind of both.
The LF-LC styling straddles the wilder, concepty looks of the LF-LC and the still wild, but more grounded, looks of the RC. That doesn't mean it's not a polarizing piece of design, with Lexus styling trademarks like the dominating spindle grille and separate LED running lights. Lexus' knife-edge cuts and folds in the bodywork have been toned down relative to past concepts, but the overall look here, particularly in the rear fenders, is rather busy.
"The LF-C2 concept shows what's in store for our brand's future design direction," Lexus boss Jeff Bracken said. "This concept shows consumers around the world Lexus' devotion to emotional designs as well as our passion for an exceptional driving experience."
