It's a V8 party! Lexus IS 500, Cadillac Escalade and more | Autoblog Podcast #667

In this week's Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Road Test Editor Zac Palmer. It's all V8s all the time this week, starting with the Land Rover Defender V8 unveiling, Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance debut and pricing announcement on the Jeep Wrangler 392. Next, they move on to what they've been driving. Spoiler alert: That means more V8 talk. Zac has been driving the Cadillac Escalade with the 6.2-liter V8 and BMW M550i with its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Greg and Zac take a pause from the V8 theme by discussing their shared time in our long-term Acura TLX. From this, they segue into a "Spend My Money" feature about garage lifts to finish the show. We'll see the next Lexus LS debut in Detroit this January

Lexus announced today that the next-generation LS luxury sedan will make its official debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. A fitting venue considering the original LS sedan made its debut there way back in 1989. Lexus didn't reveal much about the new flagship other than the teaser photo above. The company says that the LS will use a lengthened version of the LC 500 coupe's chassis, which should be a good thing if it also means Lexus can give the LS even a little bit of the emotion and character we found in the LC. Since the LS will share chassis design with the LC, it will probably share powertrains, too. This means it could get the both the LC 500's 471-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 coupled to a 10-speed auto, and the 354-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 hybrid unit with its 4-speed automatic from the LC 500h. As for styling, the LS will probably look like a toned-down version of the LF-FC concept. Lexus describes the car as having a "coupe-like silhouette." Spy shots of the big four-door seem to show a relatively conventional sedan body with a rakish windshield. We'll reserve final judgement for when we see the uncovered car. The 2017 North American International Auto Show will be a big one for Toyota. In addition to revealing this new Lexus flagship, the company will unveil the completely redesigned Camry. Based on the teaser shot released last week, this new Camry will likely be a significant departure from the conservative machine we know now. 2015 Lexus NX 300h

With so much hullabaloo being made over the first gasoline turbocharged engine produced by Lexus, it's easy to forget that there's another option for those who'd rather (barely) hear the whirring of electric motors than the high-pitched whizzing of turbos. That's too bad, because we think the NX 300h is one of the more interesting hybrids on the market, due in large part to its innovative all-wheel-drive system and relatively sporty driving dynamics. We spent several hours with the brand-new hybrid crossover from Lexus, and we came away with plenty to talk about.
Driving Notes
Of course, the big thing that differentiates the 300h from the 200t is its drivetrain. In place of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder sits a 2.5-liter gasoline engine that runs exclusively on the Atkinson cycle to save fuel, augmented by a pair of electric motors and mated to an electronic continuously variable transmission. Lexus is no stranger to hybrids, buoyed by parent company Toyota's expertise, and the basic setup used by the NX 300h is a well-known quantity shared with the ES 300h.
