I drove this car to
and from work every day for about 7 years, and I have to say that every day
that I get to drive this car, it’s a good day.
The car handles well, has a great Harmon Kardon stereo, and has been
reliable, safe transportation. I drove
the car up and back to Portland a couple of weeks ago, and I still love driving
it. However, the car
doesn't really fit our needs anymore in that we really need a car that has more
seating capacity. Also, I just don't get
to go off road that much anymore. But if you are a Land
Rover or 4x4 enthusiast, or you just want a big car that looks and runs great,
check this one out. The car weighs
around 4500 pounds, and has that thick, safe feel. When I bought this
car in March of 2005, I promptly had the trouble-prone air suspension system
removed and replaced with a standard coil-in-spring system. I also had the exhaust system replaced, a new
swivel ball installed, a new water pump, a new timing chain, tie rods, a new
fuel pump, and new fuel tank (part of the 1995 Range Rover fuel tank
recall). Most recently, I noticed that a
couple of the heater hoses looked a little sketchy, so I had those replaced
along with a new reserve coolant bottle.
The tires are in good shape and wear evenly. The car starts every morning, the
transmission shifts smoothly, and the transfer case works fine as well. The cruise control works; the air conditioner
works; the power windows work; the heater works; all of the lights work; the
car has never been owned by a smoker. There were some rust
issues when I first received the car. I
climbed under the car with some of that sticky, black rust protector stuff,
and, since then, I haven't noticed any additional rust, even after driving it
to work every day in the rainy Oregon climate. The headliner fabric
on the sunroof's sliding door has been recently glued. The glass sunroof is flawless and does not
leak. (It's just the inner headliner for
the sunroof door that isn't perfect.) The seat warmers also
don't work. I'm not sure if they were
inoperative when I received the car, or if it was a consequence of having the
air suspension system removed. But since
the car has been garaged every day, and it doesn't get that cold here in
Oregon, it hasn't been a problem. The
car comes with the genuine Land Rover seat covers as seen in the pictures. The front passenger
seat switch has a broken post. Back in
2005, I put some Velcro on the housing to keep the knob in contact with the
post so that you can still control the seat position, orientation, and so
forth. Both front seats recline/adjust
and are very comfortable. The 6-CD cassette
player, located in the rear of the car, still works very well. However, the in-dash tape player is a little
flaky. But the stereo speakers and the
subwoofer work. Occasionally, the
Anti-Lock warning lamp and the Traction Control warning lamp illuminate. However, I have never noticed any change in
the performance. The speedometer reads
about 8% higher than actual. So if it
says that you are going 65 mph, you might actually be going 60 mph. The fuel gauge also reads a tiny bit high, so
if you get too much below 1/4 tank, it’s time to get gas. The car leaks a
little power steering fluid and oil.
It's par for the course for these older Range Rovers. The SRS (air-bag)
lamp is illuminated. The car has not
been in any sort of accident or other event that might cause the airbag to
deploy. With these older cars, including
both of my old Mercedes Benzes, the air-bag sensors just get a little corroded,
and the controller is probably picking up a little extra resistance across that
sensor. This is a dealer-only item, and
I just haven't gotten around to going up to the Land Rover dealer in Portland
to have the troubleshooting done and, potentially, new sensors installed. The car comes with
the rear facing, occasional use, "jump seat." It's not a genuine Land Rover item. When the kids were little, they used to like
sitting in that seat so that they could stare out of the back window while we
drove around. As they are getting grown
up, they don't like doing that so much.
When you install the jump seat, you have to take out the rear driver
side faring that covers the spare tire.
I have shown in the pictures in both configurations along with the jack
that goes into the center of the spare tire. The car came with a copy of the owner's manual along with some other notes.

Jaguar Land Rover to recall 44,000 vehicles over excessive diesel emissions
Thu, Mar 14 2019Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 44,000 vehicles in the U.K. due to some of its vehicles emitting higher CO2 emissions than were officially stated. The recall is said to affect vehicles equipped with JLR's 2.0-liter diesel engine in cars built between 2014 and 2018. Quite a few models are affected, including the Jaguar XE, XF, E-Pace, F-Pace, along with the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Sport. The excessive CO2 emissions were discovered by the British vehicle certification agency, who then reported it to JLR. The company is reportedly working on a fix that will satisfy the agency and bring the cars back in line with their stated CO2 emissions. As of now, JLR is not saying what the fix will entail. A statement from JLR reads: "The modifications will be made free of charge, and every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to the customer." The U.K. magazine Which? said JLR told them owners might experience minor changes to the "overall vehicle experience." Reading between the lines there, that sounds like there could be some pretty serious tampering with the engine software, but we'll leave the speculation to a minimum for now. CO2 emissions numbers are used in the U.K. to set tax levels for vehicles, which means JLR could have gotten out of some taxation with its artificially low CO2 numbers. At this point we don't know how badly the numbers are off, so it's impossible to know how egregious the mislabeling is. There also isn't any explanation for why the CO2 numbers are off, but this is all information that could be forthcoming. The 44,000 number could rise, too, because the UK vehicle standards agency says that some gasoline models could also be involved. That would open a whole new can of worms for JLR. Some Jaguar vehicles (XE, XF and F-Pace) offer a 2.0-liter diesel option for the U.S., but Land Rover's only diesel it sells here now is the 3.0-liter V6. For the time being there's no recall out on the diesel or gas engines from JLR in the U.S. There's no chatter surrounding emissions cheat devices like those involved with Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal. Nor does the scale of whatever the problem is come anywhere near the amount of Volkswagen diesels that needed to be recalled or taken off the roads. Jaguar Land Rover posts profitable quarter amidst big yearly losses
Mon, May 20 2019Jaguar has posted its first profit in quite some time, as the financial quarter ending on March 31 brought in a net income of $151.6 million. However, that is the light in the end of the tunnel, as full year results through March showed a $4.58 billion loss (GBP3.6 billion). The losses are again attributable to declining sales in China, with a whiff of the still-lingering Brexit process. While JLR's annual U.S. sales were up 8.1 percent, and U.K. sales improved by 8.4%, overall sales came down 5.8% to 578,915 vehicles. For April, Chinese sales nearly halved as they dropped by 46 percent. Earlier this year, JLR's woes caused its owner Tata Motors to post the biggest ever quarterly loss in Indian corporate history, at nearly $4 billion. JLR's CEO Ralf Speth stated that the company is "reducing complexity" and transforming its business by cost savings and cash flow improvements, citing the fourth-quarter profits as an example of the ongoing turnaround. Speth said JLR has already managed to deliver $1.59 billion (GBP1.25 billion) of efficiencies and savings. JLR says its turnaround program, dubbed Charge, will drive it to at least $3.18 billion (GBP2.5 billion) of investment, working capital and profit improvements by March 2020, and that it currently has $4.84 billion (GBP3.8 billion) of cash. Speth continued that JLR will "go forward as a transformed company that's leaner and fitter," and that the sustained investment in new products and technologies will drive future demand. There has been earlier speculation of Tata Motors selling JLR to the PSA Group, but as Autocar reports, Tata's financial chief again refuted these rumors. JLR also announced today that its CFO of 11 years, Ken Gregor is stepping down after 22 years with the company, and that he will be succeeded by JLR's Chief Transformation Officer, Adrian Mardell.
Tata to shed 1,100 Jaguar Land Rover jobs after coronavirus hits earnings
Mon, Jun 15 2020BENGALURU — India's Tata Motors Ltd expects to shed about 1,100 temporary jobs at Jaguar Land Rover after it raised the cost-cutting target at its luxury unit by 1 billion pounds ($1.26 billion) to ride out the disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Tata Motors expects to save 5 billion pounds in costs by March 2021 at its Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) unit, the Indian automaker's Chief Financial Officer PB Balaji said on Monday, adding 3.5 billion pounds of the savings had already been achieved. It will also reduce capital expenditure at JLR to 2.5 billion pounds for the current fiscal year, from the more than 3 billion pounds it has spent annually in previous years. "Conserving cash and prioritizing capital expenditure, and targeting investment spending to the right areas is our focus," Balaji told reporters, after the company posted a fourth quarter loss. We anticipate that up to 1,100 agency employees will be affected, a JLR spokeswoman said in a separate statement. Tata Motors is reviewing all its businesses and would consider exiting those that do not add strategic value, as part of a broader effort to save 60 billion rupees ($789 million) in its domestic business in the fiscal year to 2021. The automaker on Monday posted a consolidated fourth quarter net loss of 98.94 billion rupees, as coronavirus lockdowns across its markets ravaged sales, including at JLR. Total revenue from operations fell 27.7% to 624.93 billion rupees in the quarter, which ended March 31. JLR, which contributes the bulk of Tata Motors' revenues, reported a pre-tax loss of 501 million pounds for the period after it took a hit of 800 million pounds because of the novel coronavirus, Balaji said. He said there were signs sales were recovering in China, one of JLR's biggest markets, as well as in the United States and in Europe, with strong orders for Land Rover's sport-utility vehicle Defender and Range Rover's Evoque. JLR's boss Ralf Speth, who has led the company since 2010, will step down from his role at the end of his contract term in September.
