2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE SC V6 3.0L Review
The Range Rover Sport is available in SE, HSE, Supercharged and Autobiography models. SE and HSE get a 340-horsepower supercharged V6, while Supercharged and Autobiography models step up to a 510-horsepower supercharged V8 engine. In either case, power is delivered through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration with either of these models is very quick, thanks especially to the weight loss-- just 6.9 seconds to 60 mph for the base engine.

The 4-wheel drive system in the Range Rover Sport provides a bias toward the rear wheels, sending more power to them most of the time for a more stable on-the-road driving feel. It works in conjunction with a Torsen differential and single-speed transfer case, while a separate system with a 2-speed transfer case and low range is optional. An available Terrain Response 2 system lets the driver simply dial in different conditions and terrains such as snow, mud, sand, gravel or rocks and the all-wheel drive and electronic stability systems will automatically choose the best settings and torque distribution to traverse it smoothly and confidently. Separately, the stability system offers a Dynamic mode, oriented toward enthusiastic driving on the road.

Beside the driver is a simplified, control layout, with a higher center console and more sophisticated, customizable displays. Highlights among in-dash interface options include a 12.3-inch TFT display, along with a separate 5-inch TFT display, as well as an 8-inch touch screen at the center of the dash for entertainment, navigation and other 'secondary' functions. When the stability control is in its Dynamic mode, the displays on that main TFT screen change to a red theme.

Underpinning the Range Rover Sport is a 4-corner air suspension with variable ride height. It has several different ride heights, depending on the speed (the maximum clearance is only available up to 31 mph), and can adjust its height about seven inches. The suspension is made of aluminum and fully independent, with double wishbones in front and a multi-link setup in back. In all, the suspension allows more than ten inches of travel for both the front and rear travel--an asset for off-roading, where wheel articulation is important. Steering is an electric-assist rack-and-pinion system, while brakes are strong Brembo 4-wheel vented discs.

The new Sport is just a couple of inches longer than the previous model, yet it has a wheelbase that's seven inches longer, allowing significant gains in back-seat space. Five can fit in the Range Rover Sport, although on both the SE and Supercharged models, there's a third-row seating option that expands total capacity to seven. Seating for five is standard on the Range Rover Sport, accommodating two comfortably in the first row and three in the second road; even the second row now included adjustability (it slides nearly four inches fore/aft) and climate settings. A third-row seat is available and adds seating for two more; the setup doesn't sacrifice any cargo space as it folds completely flat into the floor when not in use.

To help improve fuel efficiency, the Range Rover Sport now gets Intelligent Stop/Start technology. This system automatically stops the engine when at a stoplight, restarting it instantaneously as soon as the brake is released. But much attention has also been paid to cabin quiet; the Sport has multiple levels of extra sound deadening to help keep the interior quiet well beyond the levels of a normal luxury vehicle. Acoustic laminated glass is used to keep out outside and wind noise, and special bushings for the suspension help avoid transmission of road noise inside.

Safety features in the Range Rover Sport include frontal, side curtain and thorax bags, plus active front seat belts. A number of active-safety features are available in the Range Rover Sport and they might help avoid an accident entirely. Examples include Lane Blind Spot Monitoring, Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Flank Guard, Automatic High Beam Assist, Closing Vehicle Sensing, Reverse Traffic Detection and Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist. Adaptive cruise control is also available and it will brake automatically if it anticipates a collision.

The more contemporary, elongated design of the Sport, with its clamshell hood and floating roof design, along with side fender vents, is easily distinguished from a distance, while LED lamps are now used for the headlight and taillight clusters. Red Brembo brake calipers signal the sportier intent of this model. And if you order the Black Package, you can eliminate all the chrome, for even more of a performance look. Range Rover points out that there are eleven interior color themes, four different aluminum interior finishes, three real wood veneers, three headliner colors, and three contrast roof colors, along with a total of 19 exterior hues. Wheel options range from 19 to 22 inches in a variety of designs.

One key difference that the Range Rover Sport HSE offers over the SE is a standard Dual Moon Roof; but it also includes perforated leather upholstery, heated front seats, and additional trim. Outside of the engine upgrade, the Supercharged model gets adaptive damping, as well as steering-wheel paddle-shifters. At the top of the lineup, the Autobiography gets adaptive headlamps with Automatic High-Beam Assist, upgraded ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, tri-zone climate control, a center-console cooler, most of the aforementioned active-safety items and a 1700-watt Meridian Signature Reference system with 23 speakers, including a subwoofer. It's part of a connectivity package that includes voice control, Bluetooth audio streaming (and hands-free calling), and full USB connectivity.

One noteworthy option is a rear-seat entertainment system, 4-zone climate control, a 7700-lb tow package and soft door-close.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport has been completely redesigned for 2014, given a more contemporary shape, and moved to an all-aluminum structure that cuts this vehicle's overall weight by around 800 pounds compared to the previous model. The Range Rover Sport is more focused toward on-road performance than ever, although with an adjustable air suspension and Terrain Response 2 system it stull delivers impressive off-road ability. The Range Rover Sport starts at $63,495, $7,000 less than the Toyota Land Cruiser and $3,000 less than a Porsche Cayenne S.

Unique style inside and out; quiet, luxurious cabin; seating for up to seven; improved on-road performance; off-road prowess; wide range of active-safety features

Compared to the Range Rover on which it's based, the Range Rover Sport is about six inches shorter in length and two inches lower. The Sport has somewhat different packaging, with a lower seating position and more of an emphasis on handling and on-road performance. It does retain an impressive level of off-road prowess.

Versus the previous Range Rover Sport, this all-new model is faster and significantly more agile, thanks to its much lighter, all-aluminum construction. With major improvements in interior packaging and design, it should be a more pleasant place for passengers, now providing a luxurious, refined place. Compared to other models in its class, the Range Rover Sport doesn't make as much of a sacrifice in ride quality for handling and off-road prowess, while its feature set and luxurious cabin appointments are a step above some in the same price range. Key rivals include the BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, Infiniti QX70 and Cadillac Escalade.

Michael Jordan's cars showcased in 'The Last Dance' documentary

Sun, May 10 2020

After the masses begged and pleaded for an early release, ESPN finally unlocked the doors to the biggest production in company history last month. Episodes 1 and 2 of The Last Dance, a 10-part documentary special about Michael Jordan, the Chicago Bulls, and the 1997-1998 season, was released at last on April 19, 2020. Each week since, two new episodes have aired on Sunday nights, and the next two, episodes 7 and 8 are scheduled to drop this weekend on May 10. With unprecedented video access to MJ, who became averse to the media during his playing days, a byproduct from The Last Dance is a look at some of Jordan's cars. The Goat's taste ranges across a number of brands, but they all had one thing in common: performance as a top priority. Below, we have listed the rides that have already appeared in the series, and each week, we will update with new car cameos. Chevrolet Corvette C4 The photo above somewhat epitomizes one of the themes of The Last Dance. Everybody, whether that was men, women, children, franchise owners, reporters, coaches, teammates, or opponents, wanted a piece of Jordan. If that meant stopping in the middle of the road to get an autograph, then so be it. Around town, MJ was fairly easy to spot due to his flashy cars that occasionally wore Bulls red. Jordan has driven numerous Corvettes throughout the years, but the C4 is unique in that it was Chevy's top ride when Jordan signed an endorsement deal with the American company during his rookie year in 1984. Two famous photos, one in front of the Chicago skyline, show him standing next to a C4 with the license plate "Jump 23." This exact car, however, came later, as indicated by the squared-off taillights. He went on to star in a number of Chevrolet commercials with vehicles such as the Blazer and S-10 pickup truck. Chevrolet Corvette C5 The most notable Corvette His Airness ever owned was likely the C4 40th Anniversary ZR-1, but he also drove a C5 coupe at one point. Roughly nine minutes into the first episode, Jordan is seen driving the chrome-wheeled targa top into the parking lot at the Berto Center, the Bulls old practice facility.   Ferrari 550 Maranello Roughly three minutes into episode four, viewers get a glimpse of Jordan's exotic taste in the form of a red Ferrari 550 Maranello.

U.S. issues new tariff threat, this time against British-built cars

Mon, Jan 27 2020

WASHINGTON — Britain is the United States' closest ally but their long friendship may be sorely tested as the two countries try to forge a new trade agreement after Britain's exit from the European Union. U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Saturday in London that he was optimistic that a bilateral deal with Britain could be reached as soon as this year. But Mnuchin gave up no ground after a second meeting with his UK counterpart, Sajid Javid. Javid has insisted that Britain will proceed with a unilateral digital services tax, despite a U.S. threat to levy retaliatory tariffs on British-made autos. Mnuchin told reporters after Saturday's meeting that such taxes would discriminate against big U.S. tech companies like Alphabet Inc's Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon. The UK Treasury declined to comment on the private meeting. The divide highlights the challenges ahead as the Trump administration seeks a new bilateral agreement with Britain, part of a broader push to rebalance relations with nearly all its major trading partners. The stakes are high — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pegged the trade deal with United States as a way to ease the pain of breaking with Europe, Britain's largest trade partner. U.S. President Donald Trump, has promised a "massive" trade deal to support Brexit, the product of a populist movement similar to his "America First" agenda. The goodwill and special relationship the two countries have enjoyed for decades may not count for much, experts say. "Trump is not going to be doing Johnson any favors," said Amanda Sloat, a senior fellow with the Brookings Institution in Washington. "He's not going to give him a trade deal without major concessions." Even before the digital tax issue arose, the Trump administration threatened to tax foreign car imports, which could hit British-made Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini, and Honda Civic hatchback cars. Stiff U.S. trade demands include increased access for U.S. farm goods, concessions that will be difficult for Britain's entrenched natural food culture to swallow. The United States also wants Britain to change the way its National Health Service prices drugs and allow in more U.S. pharmaceuticals, which could prove politically unpopular for Johnson's government. Washington's demand that London block Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co Ltd for national security reasons could also cloud talks.

With a new Jaguar and the Shell app, your car can pay for its own gas

Wed, Feb 15 2017

Contactless payments are making their way into the car. Jaguar and Shell have the first major rollout, allowing you to pay for fuel through the car's touchscreen. Of course you'll still have to get out of the car to actually pump the fuel into the car, but hey, progress, right? Apple Pay and PayPal will be available payment methods from the start, and Android Pay will be added later. For this all to work, you'll need a new Jaguar (or Land Rover) with the InControl infotainment system, a connected phone with the InControl app and Shell app, some space in your tank, and some electronic money. When you pull up to a Shell station and launch the Shell app through the touchscreen, the car will use geolocation to figure out which station you're at and then prompt you to enter the pump number you're next to (don't want to pay for someone else's fuel now do you?). Once that's done, you tell the system how much fuel you want (it's not clear if you can just fill the tank like most normal people do) and then the screen in the car shows you a receipt; one is also sent to you via email. While this might just seem like trading one screen for another and entering info through your car instead of at the pump, contactless payments also have an added level of security over pulling out a credit card. (Credit card skimmers, which steal card data when you go to swipe at a kiosk or ATM, have been popular at gas stations.) It will also be welcome in the winter months, when you can limit your exposure time. Plus you'll never again have to respond to this incomplete sentence, which greets us at Shell stations everywhere: "Is this debit card?" InControl is available on every Jaguar and Land Rover model. And if you get this Shell app working on an F-Pace with the Jaguar Activity Key, you'll have the latest in minimal-touch technology. The system will roll out to people in the UK first and should arrive in the US later this year. Related Video: Jaguar Land Rover Technology Smartphone Luxury shell paypal
