1998 Land Rover Discovery Lse - Low Miles! Total Service! Rare! Mint! No Reserve on 2040-cars
Los Angeles, California, United States
THIS IS IT!!!! This is the Rover you have been waiting for. You have been searching endlessly online for that perfect Discovery. That super clean, super rare, OEM/Genuine, fully serviced, near perfect truck. I'm incredibly proud to end your search with this WONDERFUL Disco!
Background: Let me begin with a little background. This truck was shipped over here in July of 1998 as one of the last 1998 Discovery to come to the US. It was ordered in a INCREDIBLY RARE color and option package. To begin with, this is a highly sought after and rare LSE model. The LSE model were graced with LSE only trim such as chrome bumpers, body colored bumper caps and body colored mirrors. They also were given LSE badging and the highly sought after Boost wheels (these are not Boosts...more about that in a moment), chrome door trim, stainless steel door handles and alloy spare wheel. The LSE was given a beautiful interior make over with Lightstone seats (these are not it...more in a moment), leather wrapped gear selector, wood accents, full wood center console, leather covered cubby lid, tri-color door panels with Lightstone leather edged map pockets and chrome "Land Rover" embossed door sills, The LSE was the top of the line. With one exception: the 50th Anniversary. 1998 was the 50th Anniversary year for Land Rover and to commemorate the occasion they made 500 50th Anniversary Discovery. This is not one of them (which suffice to say unless you have a big checkbook and wait VERY patiently you, nor I, will never own one either). However, the story is that the original owner wanted a 50th Anniversary desperately, however, they were all spoken for when it was time to buy (late in the model year for him). So rather then be defeated he ordered this one to be nearly identical to the 50th Anniversary model. And aside from a few MINOR differences, wow, he got it right! How this Truck was Optioned: So let's talk about this beautiful and rare truck. Not only did the original owner buy the LSE model he then decided on the following options to make it not only drop dead gorgeous, but a near 50th Anniversary clone. First, he picked Woodcote Green - this is a dramatically appealing color. It is a deep metallic green with gold flake. In the dark it has a glossy richness and in the sun it has a golden luster. It is my opinion is one of the top 3 colors EVER offered by Land Rover. It looks good in any light and at any angle and is a VERY rare color. He then ordered the Bahama Beige interior with Lightstone piping. This is an EXCEEDINGLY rare interior color - there are many Rover nuts that have never even seen one before. Next, he ordered the Tom Woods Racing (or TWR) 5 spoke wheels. These wheels are very rare too and ESPECIALLY from the factory on a Discovery. He also ordered the 50th Anniversary trunk badge. The only thing missing from this compared to a 50th Anniversary is leather wrapped grab handles and the numbered 50th Anniversary plaque. Then to make this as great as it can get, the truck is a 7 seater, with jump seats in the rear! This makes this truck likely 1 of 1 LSE optioned like this from the factory. Go to your local Rover meets and watch the crowds walk away from Defenders and Series trucks and get ready to talk about your Disco - I can't tell you how much attention this truck gets when I stop by the Rover dealer or go to Club meets. The Condition and Service: This truck has been METICULOUSLY, METHODICALLY, ENTHUSIASTICALLY and PROFESSIONALLY maintained and serviced. It is the gold standard for Rover service and doing it RIGHT. Let's start on the engine and drivetrain: This engine has INCREDIBLY LOW MILES as a result of the pride and care the owner took of the truck after ordering his dream truck. Only 87,000 miles appear on the odometer and the entire truck shows the same care. There has been A TON of scheduled and preventive maintenance performed to this truck to keep in near brand new condition. And it OEM to the highest degree! The engine is very healthy and has loads of smooth power! -HEAD GASKETS As part of the preventive service schedule, this truck received brand new OEM head gaskets and OEM headbolts. It was installed by a master Rover tech with several decades of experience. The truck runs COOL as can be and has never overheated. -UPPER AND LOWER ENGINE GASKETS While being serviced, the valve cover gaskets, valley pan gaskets, valve stem seals, upper intake gaskets, crank seal, oil pickup seal and oil pan were all resealed among a few other minor seals. NONE of these were leaking, but were done in order to keep with the same high regard and care. Take a look at the underside engine pics. Have you ever in your life seen a Rover engine so clean???? -WATER PUMP The truck received a brand new OEM water pump as part of the total servicing -RADIATOR The radiator was cleaned and rodded in order to keep maximum flow and keep this beauty nice and cool. The temp needle NEVER moves past 7/8pm even with the AC on and driving in the mountains. -HOSES New OEM hoses -BATTERY Brand new Bosch battery - cranks great! -IGNITION Brand new Champion coppers (the RIGHT plugs) and wires. -BELT New serpentine belt -FUEL FILTER Brand new OEM fuel filter -EMERGENCY BRAKE Recently adjusted and tight, only a couple notches on the handle holds the truck tight -TRANSMISSION The trans was just given all new fluid and shifts great! -DIFFS and DRIVESHAFTS New gear oil in the diffs and lubricated u-joints -SWIVEL BALLS Fresh grease, serviced and shims Lets move to the suspension and brakes: -BRAKES Brand new OEM master cylinder and booster. The factory cylinders and boosters tend to get worn and this is a brand new replacement for the older original unit. The truck brakes great. No ABS lights! Also newer pads and rotors that bit wonderfully. -SHOCKS Low mile OEM shocks - I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW AMAZING THIS TRUCK RIDES. It feels brand new. The dampening is so tight and comfortable and again, this feels like a new truck. -STEERING Discoveries are known to have leaky steering boxes - in fact its VERY rare to find one that doesn't....Guess what? This is one of the rare ones. No leaky box...why? Because its a new OEM box! This box has less than 5000 miles on it and so do the lines. Not a DROP coming out of it. The steering is so tight and so direct, it's comical to get in my other Discos sometimes after this one. Again, this truck drives like a dream. There are not enough adjectives available for me to describe just how nice this truck drives. Let's continue to the exterior: -RUST FREE This is a Southern California truck - you will not find even a drop of rust, surface rust, Rusty from National Lampoon's Vacation or even anything that rhymes with rust. East coasters, I'm looking at you! Eventually all the east coast trucks, unless only used in the summer and garaged in a climate controlled garage, will find some rust. This is a rust free as it gets. Even all the exposed threads on bolt ends are perfectly clear of rust. -PAINT The paint is near flawless. It is a 9 out of 10 against ANY car, new or not. When compared to any car of it's period it is a 27 out of 10. There is only minor signs that this truck ever saw life outside of a hermetically sealed garage. A few minor scratches here and there go almost totally unnoticed especially on the color - it hides dirt and scratches well. -WHEELS and TIRES The wheels are in great shape with no major flaws or curbing. The TWRs look fantastic on the truck and includes the 5th TWR wheel on the spare. Tires have LOADS of tread on them - 90%+++ tread on these Pirelli Scorpion tires. The 5th wheel is a OEM Michelin XP with the same tread. Onto the cabin: -SEATS The seats are immaculate. There is NO cracking, NO wear, NO seams coming apart. NO SURPRISES. They are incredibly supportive with what feels like zero foam wear. I joke that a supermodel must have owned it because the cushions feel so supportive and high that it must have been a wafer thin owner. -JUMP SEATS Just to make this even better, the jumps look unused. They are in wonderful shape with zero tears or issues. -DOOR PANELS One of the big things with Discos is the top of the drivers side door panel gets cracked...not this one! Map pocket leather is tight and not pulling away. All of the panels are free of dents or defects. -HEADLINER Another Disco trait is for the headliner to begin to sag as the OEM glue ages. This truck's glue found a similar fate with just a hint of a sag, so rather than let it come down the truck just received a BRAND NEW OEM color headliner. And without the OEM glue to go bad this will last a lifetime. -SUNROOFS This truck has the dual sunroof option and both work perfectly and have no rattles, leaks or issues. When was the last Disco you drove you could say that?? -POWER SEATS All power seat functions work perfect. Again, when was the last Disco you drove you could say that?? -POWER LOCKS All doors lock and unlock with central locking function. AGAIN, when was the last Disco you knew did that??? -RADIO/CD CHANGER Works perfect, all LCDs work and the clarity is perfect. 6 Disc CD Changer works perfectly! -AC/HEAT AC is ice cold and Heat is earth core hot! -MIRRORS Power mirrors work perfectly and the center self dimming mirror is perfectly clear and works great! -WOOD No chips in the wood. The finish is perfect and the stain is smooth -STEERING WHEEL The leather is as great as it gets, its like someone drove the truck with white cotton gloves -CARGO COVER The cover is in near flawless shape and retracts and pulls out smoothly. -MISCELLANEOUS The OEM roof rack bars are in their bag under the seats and the original jack and ramp are are the hood The Experience Driving this Discovery is what it would feel like to buy a brand new D1 right now. It is Lexus quiet inside, pulls and handles like a sports car and is as comfortable as a Rolls Royce. I DO NOT HESITATE TO SAY THIS IN THE TOP 0.5% OF DISCOVERY IN THE UNITED STATES. If you can find one nicer than this, I highly suggest you buy it. I hope you can tell by my long ad how much I care about this truck and just how incredibly nice it is. I don't have enough words in my vocabulary to discuss just how rare, great of shape and amazing to drive this Disco is. It's tax season, treat yourself to the truck you have been waiting for in this NO RESERVE AUCTION! Low mileage, west coast, rust free trucks come up VERY rarely. Add all the colors, options, impeccable service and overall condition and you have a needle in a haystack. Don't let this one get away and HOPE that something like it will come along. This as mentioned is likely 1 of 1 painted and optioned like this. There is well over $15k in scheduled and preventive service alone in this truck so you are ready to go another 100k+++ of care free miles. Feel free to ask me any questions at all. Title is clean and in my name. CA residents, this truck is smogged and registered and ready to rock. It passed smog with flying colors even with the VERY strict STAR smog test. Residents around the country I am happy to be flexible for your arranged shipper so that you can get your new truck as soon as possible. My standard disclaimer/mantra for any car regardless of service or price: The truck is sold with no warranty. You are buying a used car. Eventually every car will break, if you find one that doesn't please let me know. I do my ABSOLUTE BEST to offer only cars that are of TOP NOTCH service. I am not a dealer, just a guy who loves Rovers (among other cars) and hope to pass along my passion and fervor for these trucks. That said if ever you encounter an issue I do my best to provide advice, direction or even parts if I have them. This truck is near perfect, not actually perfect. Please understand that it is a used car and will have minor signs of use. That said, this truck is WELL above average. Please only bid if you intend to buy. Sorry to have to give the boring speech. Happy Rover-trails!!!! |

Environmental group accuses BMW, JLR of link to deforestation in Paraguay
Wed, Sep 30 2020ASUNCION, Paraguay — Environmental group Earthsight said on Wednesday it has linked some of Europe's largest carmakers to the deforestation of the Chaco, a dry forest region of Paraguay home to jaguars and one of the last uncontacted indigenous groups in the world. The group said in a report that livestock companies have illegally logged lands of the Ayoreo Totobiegosode indigenous ethnic group, some of whose members live in voluntary isolation. The livestock skin is used in leather upholstery of luxury vehicles sold by high-end European auto brands including BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover, the group said. UK-based Earthsight said it had made covert visits to tanneries that bragged about supplying the raw material to the luxury car brands. "BMW is using hides sourced from two slaughterhouses processing cows from ranches responsible for illegal [logging] in the Ayoreo Totobiegosode's forests. Jaguar Land Rover didn't dispute sourcing from a Paraguayan tannery that processes hides from another slaughterhouse doing the same," the report said. Jaguar Land Rover said in a statement to Reuters it had found no evidence to verify Earthsight's claims. It said its European suppliers assured sustainability. "We continue our drive for further transparency and, in this case, the leather supplier in Europe verifies with each raw material supplier that no rural property that directly supplies it is involved in illegal deforestation," the automaker said. BMW did not respond to a request for comment on the Earthsight investigation. Paraguay exports about 50,000 tons of wet-blue leather (tanned, but not dried, dyed or finished) a year, and almost two-thirds of those shipments are bound for Europe, according to the report. Automakers say that leather is a byproduct of the far larger meat industry and high-end cars constitute a comparatively small market niche. But indigenous leaders say deforestation driven by growth in beef and leather exports is encroaching on their territory and destroying their way of life. "As deforestation advances with extensive cattle ranching, they are being imprisoned, they are disappearing," Taguide Picanerai, a spokesman for the Ayoreo community in the Alto Paraguay department, northwest of Asuncion, told Reuters. The region is home to some of the world's highest rates of deforestation, Earthsight said.  Green BMW Jaguar Land Rover
BMW and Jaguar Land Rover to jointly develop electric car tech
Wed, Jun 5 2019FRANKFURT – BMW and Jaguar Land Rover on Wednesday said they will jointly develop electric motors, transmissions and power electronics, unveiling yet another industry alliance designed to lower the costs of developing electric cars. Both carmakers are under pressure to roll out zero-emission vehicles to meet stringent anti-pollution rules, but have struggled to maintain profit margins faced with the rising costs of making electric, connected and autonomous cars. "Together, we have the opportunity to cater more effectively for customer needs by shortening development time and bringing vehicles and state-of-the-art technologies more rapidly to market," said BMW board member Klaus Froehlich. BMW and Jaguar Land Rover said they will save costs through shared development, production planning and joint purchasing of electric car components. Both companies will produce electric drivetrains in their own manufacturing facilities, BMW said. The BMW Jaguar Land Rover pact comes as rivals FiatChrysler and Renault explore a $35 billion tie-up of the Italian-American and French carmaking groups. Nick Rogers, Jaguar Land Rover's engineering director said, "We've proven we can build world beating electric cars but now we need to scale the technology to support the next generation of Jaguar and Land Rover products." BMW was in talks with rival Daimler about developing electric car components but was also in discussions with Jaguar Land Rover, a company it once owned, to explore an alliance on engines. BMW already has a deal to supply an 8 cylinder engine to Jaguar Land Rover. Carmakers are increasingly open to sharing electric car parts because the technology is expensive and because customers no longer buy a car based on what engine a vehicle has. "Carmakers are much less precious about sharing electric car technology because it is much harder to create product differentiation with electric car tech. They all accelerate fast, and everybody can do quality and ride and handling," according to Carl-Peter Forster a former chief executive of Tata Motors and a former BMW executive. Jaguar Land Rover is still run by former BMW managers, including Ralf Speth the company's chief executive who spent 20 years at BMW prior to joining JLR, and Wolfgang Ziebart, the engineer who oversaw Jaguar's I-Pace electric car program, who is a former head of research and development at BMW.
Fully Charged rolls into season 3 with VW XL1 and electric Land Rover
Sat, Jan 18 2014It's been some time since last we visited with British actor and electric car proponent Robert Llewellyn and his web-based video series, Fully Charged. The show, now sponsored by Ecotricity, has started rolling out its third season and now has available two episodes featuring a pair of truly unique – and diametrically opposed – vehicles. The first installment starts with some interesting numbers involving the host's Nissan Leaf and its energy consumption over the past 36,000 miles, but soon moves on to the ultra-aero, ultra-expensive Volkswagen XL1. Now, if you've already seen the footage from our own XL1 first drive review, there's not a lot new here except, perhaps, more enthusiasm and a better listen of the two-cylinder diesel kicking in. Still, it's a great reminder of a truly unique vehicle and we enjoyed the segment. The second episode features an electrified Land Rover Defender 110. This is a vehicle you'd more likely see on an African safari than at the local mall. It's not a home-built conversion either, but rather, something the company has put together "for the boffins to create the ideas and see if they work." Boasting a 50-mile range, it's certainly something we like to take on an off-road adventure. Llewellyn is given the chance to do just that, and though the course is somewhat milder than what we might attempt, it does feature a stretch of river and some rough, rutted tracks. You can watch both episodes by scrolling below let us know which vehicle you'd prefer in the comments. This writer is going with the four-wheel-drive. This content is hosted by a third party.
