Up for auction is my NAS Defender 90, #1574.  I had hoped to keep this car forever, however we have found a house that we'd like to buy and naturally my play toy gets sacrificed (per wife's orders).  This Rover had been in an accident back in 2006 and sat in a garage for 6 years when I bought it.  The front passenger fender was damaged along with the air conditioning condenser and freon lines.  All these items were replaced with new ones.  There is no body filler (Bondo) on the car.  I then had the entire Rover repainted, only after I removed just about everything off of it (doors, door latches, hinges, full roll cage, all signals and lights, grill, bonnet, tire carrier, tailgate, door rubber seals, etc)  so that there would be no overspray (again I hoped to keep it forever and wanted it done right).  I re-assembled as much as I could with stainless steel bolts (door hinges, bonnet hinges, front grill, headlight surrounds, body to rear crossmember, etc).  Then the Rover was wet sanded, compounded, and polished for a nice smooth finish.  I replaced all signals with new ones (originals were somewhat cloudy), replace all four wheel spats (originals had become dull).  The Rover looks great, and more importantly it runs and drives great.  It drives well at highway speeds and doesn't shimmy, or pull to one side, etc.  The engine is nice and powerful and doesn't smoke, burn oil, etc.  the automatic transmission is nice and smooth and shifts as it should.  The soft top is in good shape with only one small 1/2" tear at the top of the rear window (could easily be patched if desired, it doesn't let in water so I didn't worry about it).  The interior is in good shape with no tears on any of the seats, no cracks in the dashboard, etc.  It has a nice set of Goodyear tires with I'd guess 90% tread left (matching spare tire that has never been on the ground).  The heat and air-conditioning both work well.  I installed a Sony cd stereo, however I will include the original Land Rover cassette stereo with the sale.  There is essentially no rust on the frame, bulkhead or rear crossmember.  The drivers door has a very small amount on the bottom door frame, the passenger side door has none.  The battery box has no rust as well.  The original jack, wheel lug wrench, and tools are still there and have never been used.  I am embarrassed to say that this Rover has never been off-roading, but I guess that's a good thing.  The Defender only has 50,360 original miles on it.  When I bought it, like almost all '97 Defenders, the digital odometer would scramble back and forth between jumble and the correct millage.  I sent the entire speedometer off to Hollywood Clock and Speedometer Shop, they verified the millage and repaired the digital screen (I have the paperwork documenting this).  Please look at the Carfax report to validate this in the "state inspection field".  Unfortunately when I bought the Rover the business that sold it to me could not read the odometer and they checked "not actual" millage  and the Virginia DMV would not make the correction.  Feel free to email or call me with questions, my number is 540-598-8331, and I will walk around it with you on the phone and describe every detail.  I welcome and encourage anyone interested to come see/drive it in person before bidding, if you're long distant, I will happily pick you up at the Roanoke Airport.  This truly is an awesome Defender, these things are amazingly capable of going just about anywhere,  just point and go.  I hope to be as forthright and honest in my representing it as possible.  ***IMPORTANT: the Warn winch is not included in the auction****  This is a used car and therefore is sold AS-IS.  Buyer is responsible for picking up or shipping, however I am happy to drop it off at any local shipping depot.  $1000.00 deposit through Paypal at auction end, the balance at pickup.  The Defender is also for sale locally, therefore I reserve the right to end the auction early.

Jaguar Land Rover develops 'transparent' A-pillar and ghost car [w/video]

Mon, Dec 15 2014

Jaguar and Land Rover are known for making highly covetable luxury, performance and off-road vehicles, but the British automakers are on a bit of a technology bent lately. Keen to show that it can not only keep up but lead the way when it comes to safety and convenience features, JLR has come out with two more systems to show the way forward. JLR's new 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen system, showcased on an XJ sedan, adopts two novel approaches to getting around town. First up is the Transparent Pillar system, which uses a combination of cameras and display screens embedded in the A, B and C-pillars to make them virtually disappear. Instead of acting as blind spots limiting the driver's visibility, the system uses the roof pillars to display what's going on around the car. If there's an obstacle hidden by the A-pillars, the system shows you the potential hazard as if the pillars weren't there, and brings the obstacle to the driver's attention. If the driver turns his or her head to see a vehicle passing alongside, it projects the vehicle on the inside of the B- or C-pillar. The second technology integrated in the next-generation head-up display is the Follow-Me Ghost Car Navigation system, which takes a page out of the video-game playbook by projecting a "ghost car" on the windscreen that the driver can then "follow" instead of listening to turn-by-turn directions or looking at a map in the dashboard display. The system is similar to what Jaguar recently showcased on an F-Type for track use, but applied for more practical use on city streets and highways. The release of these systems also follows the integrated smart navigation and infotainment system displayed on the Range Rover Sport and the Transparent Bonnet showcased on the Discovery Vision concept. Though these new technologies might not be quite ready for production applications, their impressive sum total goes to show that Jaguar Land Rover is ahead of the curve when it comes to reducing driver distraction and increasing the driver's visibility. Scope out the latest systems in the press release and video below for a closer look of what the future holds for British-style luxury motoring. This content is hosted by a third party. Watch thieves dressed like ninjas hit dealership, steal $583,000 worth of Land Rovers

Fri, Feb 23 2024

WAUKESHA, Wis. — A group of teenagers believed to be from the Chicago area broke into a luxury car dealership in Wisconsin and drove off with nine vehicles worth more than a half-million dollars, police said. Sunday's heist at a Jaguar-Land Rover dealership in Waukesha was captured on surveillance camera footage showing nine masked suspects filing into the dealership before each drives off in a car in the city about 19 miles (30.5 kilometers) west of Milwaukee. The video also shows one car being backed up and smashed through an overhead service door. Waukesha Police Capt. Dan Baumann said the suspects broke into the dealership about 6 a.m. Sunday, found where its car keys were stored and then activated those key fobs to find the cars they stole. “Nine subjects went out and throughout there looking for keys. One person finds where the keys were hidden and then starts to disseminate those to his friends,” Baumann told WISN-TV. The nine vehicles are valued at more than $583,000, he said. One suspect, a 17-year-old Chicago boy, was arrested Sunday in the southern Wisconsin community of Pleasant Prairie after the stolen vehicle he was driving crashed along Interstate 94 during a police pursuit. He was being held at the Waukesha County Jail on a $50,000 bond and faces burglary, theft and criminal damage to property charges, Baumann said. Police said Sunday that the suspects are believed to be “an organized crime group of teenagers from the Chicago area.” Baumann said Friday that all or most of the teen suspects are known to members of a police task force in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois and police in that two-state region were still searching Friday for the eight other suspects. Six of the nine stolen vehicles have been recovered — four in Chicago, one in the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, and one in Wisconsin after the highway crash that led to the 17-year-old's arrest, he said.

Jeep driver nearly gets washed away by fast moving river

Wed, May 11 2016

Just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should. For example, you should never attempt to cross a fast-moving river in a bone stock Grand Cherokee no matter how shallow the river looks. Especially if you don't know what you're doing. A video posted recently to the Facebook group Jeep EXPERIENCE, shows an inexperienced jeep driver learning that lesson the hard way. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. The video starts innocently enough, with a group of off-roaders watching one of their friends attempt to ford a shallow looking river. Things quickly go sideways however, when the driver of the silver Grand Cherokee just plunges right in and quickly gets in over his head. The river is moving faster than the driver thinks it is, the driver panics, makes some bad decisions, then the jeep is turned over and swept downstream. Eventually, the jeep is hauled out by a Land Rover after a long comedy of errors that involves one guy losing his trousers to the current and the Cherokee ingesting untold gallons of water. What went wrong here? Well, It's pretty obvious from the video that the Cherokee driver didn't have a clear idea of where he was going or about the condition of the riverbed. He chickened out halfway across the river, and in what appears to be a misguided attempt at turning back, he reverses, digs himself deeper in the riverbed, then turned broadside on into the current. When he changes his mind again and decides to just gun it for the opposite shore, he drives directly into a deep water hazard that would have been obvious to an experienced off-roader. At that point the jeep and the driver were doomed. Hopefully the driver learned a lesson here, and hopefully he didn't pollute that river too much with the jeep's fluids.
