Offered for sale is an extremely solid, low mileage, exceptionally well looked after, two owner, final import year 1997 Land Rover Defender 90 NAS Convertible finished in rare British Racing Green Metallic over Grey. Originally delivered to its original owner in Aspen, Colorado, the truck was always exceptionally maintained, garaged and used purely as an open-air summer season driver, its full convertible top generally stored. It was subsequently sold two years ago to its second owner, a wealthy seasonal resident here in Montecito who continued to use the truck infrequently and service it at the local Land Rover dealer. Consequently, it needs nothing mechanically  and has accrued a mere 44k original miles, confirmed through Land Rover records and a completely clean CARFAX report.

One of only 438 NAS Defender 90s imported in British Racing Green Metallic in 1997, the finish is in exceptional condition, showing only minor evidence of its age, something of a rarity for these rough and tumble trucks. The body is straight, original and rust-free with excellent panel fits and gaps, all of the glass is in great shape and the original Freestyle alloy wheels are impeccable and wrapped in pricey and hardly used BF Goodrich all terrain tires. Always garaged and never truly off-roaded or used in snow, the truck’s undercarriage and frame are clean, original and free of rust or evidence or rust repair. Hardly used, the full soft-top is in excellent original condition and the Defender comes with an optional Bimini top showing absolutely no wear.

The truck’s interior is also in excellent original condition, the grey water resistant seats (including the folding and removable two passenger rear seat with three point seat belts) show only the most negligible amount of wear, the interior panels are in good shape and the original rubber mats remain in place. Delivered with full-time four wheel drive and high-low range selection, a full safari cage and factory air conditioning (which blows cold), the truck also has a high quality tuner (with USB connection) and CD changer in its lockable center console, speakers throughout and a lockable Tuffy box over the rear wheel arch.

Mechanically fantastic, this Defender is a pleasure from behind the wheel, providing that visceral, rugged feel that only the best 4X4 in the world can provide. Cleaner burning than the 3.9L engines in the earlier model year NAS D90s, this car’s original 4.0L V8 starts effortlessly, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the automatic transmission’s gears. Compression is excellent and even across all cylinders and the truck’s road manners are exactly what you’d expect from a low mileage, well-maintained example. All it needs to be enjoyed is another doting owner.

With side impact and airbag regulations bringing the Defender 90’s three-year (’94, ’95 and ’97) North American run to an end, the ’97 model is the last and arguably best vintage of the iconic truck. Finding a low mileage, well-cared-for example in a rare and appealing configuration is becoming more and more difficult, with demand far exceeding supply. Consequently, the market on NAS Defender 90s has remained exceptionally strong, making them one of the few modern-era production vehicles to actually be considered investment grade. That said, whether you’re looking to continue the previous owners’ gentle use of the truck or purchasing it as the utilitarian brute that it was designed to be, this exceptionally clean final year Defender 90 deserves your serious consideration.

We’ve always had an appreciation for classic European cars and over the years have created an eclectic personal collection, which has afforded us the opportunity of meeting many other interesting enthusiasts, including the owner of this Defender. As such, this is a consignment car and can be seen by appointment at our warehouse in Santa Barbara. We try to give accurate descriptions of the cars we’re selling, but we’re enthusiasts, not experts, and we encourage and are happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please do so before bidding, as the alternative harms our ability to make sales to other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before bidding.

For U.S. buyers a 10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end, the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Foreign buyers must pay in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end. Buyer is responsible for shipping, however we’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and arrangements. The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end the auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your interest.

All-electric Jaguar XJ coming soon on platform shared with 'Road Rover'

Mon, Jun 24 2019

We've been posting on the likelihood of electric Jaguars for a while now, especially the XJ leading the charge as a new EV flagship. Rumors at the beginning of 2018 predicted an XJ EV on our doorstep by the end of 2018, the 50th anniversary year of the XJ. By April this year, it was looking like the battery-powered XJ would use the I-Pace platform and make an appearance sometime in 2019. Now, Automotive News Europe reports that during Jaguar Land Rover's Investor's Day presentations, the automaker said it would debut a "large SUV and a large premium sedan" on its Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) suitable for EVs, hybrids and traditional ICE-powered cars. The sedan in question is the next-gen XJ. Nick Rogers, JLR's product engineering boss, said electric MLA vehicles will get 90.2-kWh batteries that return range of up to 400 kilometers (292 miles) on the European cycle. That would effectively be the same size battery as the I-Pace, which rides on its own one-off platform, and the same range; in the U.S., the I-Pace is rated at 234 miles. It's said the XJ's design, produced by former Jaguar design chief Ian Callum and his team, has already been cleared. It swaps the four-door body for a five-door, a la the Audi A7, and introduces a new design language for the car and the carmaker. Car and Driver says the new statement sedan aims to be "a cutting-edge alternative to the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class," and Autocar saying it will "remain Jaguar's flagship in preference to a large SUV, such as the rumored J-Pace." The point of introducing the EV first is to establish the car's technology and sporting credentials — hopefully before the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT arrive. Eventually, an ICE version of the XJ powered by an Ingenium inline-six should come; that will welcome buyers not ready to make the all-EV switch, a necessary move in keeping with the XJ's competition for global sales with the S-Class and 7 Series. However, leaving room in the design for a conventional drivetrain will force compromises that the all-electric competition doesn't face. Production of the current XJ ends at the Castle Bromwich facility on July 5. The new sedan is slated to be "announced in the near future" and built at JLR's plant in Solihull, which assembles Land Rover products. The same MLA platform will support a road-focused Land Rover as a sibling to the XJ, dubbed the "Road Rover" internally.

Jaguar CEO says people just don't want EVs right now

Mon, Jun 22 2015

"Customers are not impressed with it currently." These are the words of one Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, spoke at the Automotive News Europe Congress in Birmingham, England. The "it" Speth is referring to is battery technology, which he characterized as "too heavy, too expensive," and with power density that's "too low." That all could go some way towards explaining why the British automaker has yet to bring an electric vehicle to market, why it killed the C-X75 hybrid-turbine supercar project, and why it only recently started offering hybrid versions of its Range Rover models (and has yet to offer them in the United States). That doesn't mean the company won't pursue electric propulsion in the future, though. According to Automotive News Europe, Speth forecasts that "the next generation of batteries will be higher density, lower weight and the cost will come down." What he didn't say, exactly, is when he expects that next generation of battery tech to come around – or when JLR will start to more closely embrace electric propulsion. In the meantime, Jaguar Land Rover will continue investing in research and development. Since Tata acquired the brands from Ford seven years ago, JLR has quadrupled its R&D budget and doubled the number of engineers on staff. Related Video:

Lexus tops JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study again, Buick bests Toyota

Wed, Feb 25 2015

It shouldn't surprise anyone, but Lexus has once again taken the top spot in JD Power's Vehicle Dependability Study. That'd be the Japanese luxury brand's fourth straight year at the top of table. The big news, though, is the rise of Buick. General Motor's near-premium brand beat out Toyota to take second place, with 110 problems per 100 vehicles compared to Toyota's 111 problems. Lexus owners only reported 89 problems per 100 vehicles. Besides Buick's three-position jump, Scion enjoyed a major improvement, jumping 13 positions from 2014. Ram and Mitsubishi made big gains, as well, moving up 11 and 10 positions, respectively. In terms of individual segments, GM and Toyota both excelled, taking home seven segment awards each. The study wasn't good news for all involved, though. A number of popular automakers finished below the industry average of 147 problems per 100 vehicles, including Subaru, (157PP100), Volkswagen (165PP100), Ford/Hyundai (188PP100 each) and Mini (193PP100). The biggest losers (by a tremendous margin, we might add) were Land Rover and Fiat, recording 258 and 273 problems per 100 vehicles. The next closest brand was Jeep, with 197PP100. While the Vehicle Dependability Study uses the same measurement system as the Initial Quality Survey, the two metrics analyze very different things. The VDS looks at problems experienced by original owners of model year 2012 vehicles over the past 12 months, while the oft-quoted IQS focuses on problems in the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership. Like the IQS, though, the VDS has a rather broad definition of what a problem is. Because of that, a low score from JD Power is no guarantee of extreme unreliability, so much as just poor design. In this most recent study, the two most reported problems focused on Bluetooth connectivity and the voice-command systems. The former leaves plenty of room for user error due to poor design (particularly true of the Bluetooth systems on the low-scoring Fords, Volkswagens and Subarus), while the second is something JD Power has already confirmed as being universally terrible. That makes means that while these studies are important, they shouldn't be taken as gospel when it comes to automotive reliability.
