VERY LOW RESERVE! 1986 Land Rover 90 (Defender) Diesel.  Imported from the UK, so it is right-hand drive.  5-speed manual transmission with nice tight power steering.  Runs and drives quite well for its age.  This is an unrestored original, but has obviously been well cared for.  Interior is in very nice shape with seats that appear to be new (appear to be factory spec seats).  All glass good, rubber floor liner in nice shape.  Dash in fine shape and all gauges and controls appear to work as they should.  2.5 liter diesel engine runs well and does not appear to smoke, except a bit at start-up.  Shifts through all the gears quite well and clutch seems to have plenty of life left, engages smoothly.   Steering is plenty tight and suspension seems good as well.  Tracks straight down the road and does not seem prone to rattles or vibrations.  All in all, a very nice driving vehicle, albeit a bit slow on the freeway, though it will hold 65 just fine.  Body in good condition for the age.  Some minor corrosion along the bottom of the doors and at the back corner - no spots seem to be larger than about a nickel and can be seen on the pictures.  There don't appear to be any holes or corrosion that has gone past the very surface.  For the age, the exterior is in very nice shape.  Windshield and cowl area appear solid.  Underneath the truck, the frame is solid, though like most rovers of this vintage, it has been patched at some point, as they tend to rot in places.  I noted one welded patch on each side near the rear suspension mount.  Seemed to be very professional work, patch was correctly formed and welds were strong and clean (see picture).  Most of the frame paint had worn off the back half of the vehicle, so I had the back half cleaned, coated in frame paint, and covered in rubberized coating as shown in the pictures.  The underbody of the tub seems to be in nice shape with good, solid floors and inner wheel wells.  The two rearmost floor crossmembers appear to have been patched at one point, but seem solid enough now.  I tried to show all of the weak spots that I could find in the pictures, so please look carefully.  This Rover has been fully imported and is titled and insured in my name in Minnesota.  Will transfer just like any other vehicle.  I have owed it since September, and it has spent most of the tie here in my heated shop.  I own a small car dealership, and imported myself.  Avoid the hassle and potential disaster of importing your own over.  These are getting more and more difficult to bring over, as people have tried to sneak later model defenders over.  I'm happy to answer any questions, and will assist with shipping in any way that I can.  I am a licensed dealer, so I can usually get a pretty decent rate on shipping across the US.

Jaguar Land Rover names new manufacturing chief for EV transformation

Thu, May 3 2018

LONDON — Britain's biggest carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is replacing its director for manufacturing as it prepares its plants for an electrified future, the firm said on Thursday. JLR operates three factories in its home market but is building its first electric car, the I-PACE, in Austria. The Indian-owned automaker's Chief Executive Ralf Speth told Reuters earlier this year he is waiting for more information on trading conditions after Brexit before he decides whether to make electric cars in Britain. On Thursday, he said Executive Director for Manufacturing Wolfgang Stadler is retiring from the business, to be replaced by Director of Quality and Automotive Safety Grant McPherson starting July 1. "He will oversee the ongoing investment into our UK and global manufacturing, transforming our plants to enable Jaguar Land Rover's exciting electrified future," Speth said. Jeep driver nearly gets washed away by fast moving river

Wed, May 11 2016

Just because you can do something doesn't mean that you should. For example, you should never attempt to cross a fast-moving river in a bone stock Grand Cherokee no matter how shallow the river looks. Especially if you don't know what you're doing. A video posted recently to the Facebook group Jeep EXPERIENCE, shows an inexperienced jeep driver learning that lesson the hard way. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. The video starts innocently enough, with a group of off-roaders watching one of their friends attempt to ford a shallow looking river. Things quickly go sideways however, when the driver of the silver Grand Cherokee just plunges right in and quickly gets in over his head. The river is moving faster than the driver thinks it is, the driver panics, makes some bad decisions, then the jeep is turned over and swept downstream. Eventually, the jeep is hauled out by a Land Rover after a long comedy of errors that involves one guy losing his trousers to the current and the Cherokee ingesting untold gallons of water. What went wrong here? Well, It's pretty obvious from the video that the Cherokee driver didn't have a clear idea of where he was going or about the condition of the riverbed. He chickened out halfway across the river, and in what appears to be a misguided attempt at turning back, he reverses, digs himself deeper in the riverbed, then turned broadside on into the current. When he changes his mind again and decides to just gun it for the opposite shore, he drives directly into a deep water hazard that would have been obvious to an experienced off-roader. At that point the jeep and the driver were doomed. Hopefully the driver learned a lesson here, and hopefully he didn't pollute that river too much with the jeep's fluids. Lexus leads J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study for 2021

Thu, Feb 18 2021

J.D. Power's latest Vehicle Dependability Study is out, and, not surprisingly, Lexus sits at the top for the ninth time in the last 10 years. Right behind Lexus is Porsche, followed by Kia, which is the highest-ranked mass-market brand in the study. Genesis, last year's top-ranked brand (in its first year included in the results), fell from first to eighth, though the G80 sedan did earn an award in its midsize luxury segment. The Porsche 911 was called out as the Most Dependable Model by J.D. Power for the second time in the last three years. The vehicles being studied are from the 2018 model year, which means owners have had three years to get to know their cars and trucks. It's notable that this year's study shows a marked improvement in overall vehicle dependability as tracked by J.D. Power. The overall level of problems, scored by the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), declined by 10% compared to last year.  "The study results validate what we have known for some time," said Dave Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power. "Automakers are making increasingly dependable vehicles — but there are still some problem areas that need to be addressed and some warning signs on the horizon." Tesla makes its inaugural appearance on the Dependability Study, though its score of 176 PP100 isn't official. Tesla is the only automaker that has chosen not to grant J.D. Power permission to survey its owners in all 50 states. As we've pointed out in the past, the Vehicle Dependability Study includes eight major vehicle categories grouped by J.D. Power as follows: audio/communication/entertainment/navigation (ACEN); engine/transmission; exterior; interior; features/controls/displays (FCD); driving experience; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; and seats. All issues reported by owners are all tracked equally, which means a problematic phone pairing procedure dings an automaker's rating the same as a blown engine or transmission. And in fact, the ACEN category has more reported problems than any other, which means the majority of problems reported don't lead to a vehicle that leaves its owner stranded.
