Very nice, clean 1979 Land Rover Stage I V8.  For those of you who haven't heard of the Stage I, that was Land Rover's bridge between the old Series III 109 and the Defender models. By the late 70s, consumers were getting tired of the lack of performance from the old Land Rover 4 cylinder engines used in the traditional Series III "old school" Land Rovers.  The 4 bangers didn't have enough power to go proper highway speeds, were slow on acceleration, and didn't have great fuel mileage to boot.  Fearing loss of market share, but lacking the funds to completely redo their large station wagon models, Land Rover took their 3.5L aluminum V8 out of the Range Rover, mated it to their heavy-duty LT-95 4 speed military truck transmission, lengthened the engine bay, and came up with the Stage I V8 model.  What you get is a rare truck that looks much like the beloved Series III, 109" wagon, but with an engine that can actually handle highway speeds and a transmission that doesn't disintegrate from the added power--which is a common problem with converting the old Series IIA and III wagons to V8 power. It also comes with permanent all wheel drive carried over from the Range Rover design.  I bought this truck from a collector in New York and drove it back to my summer home in Minnesota, where it stayed useful for several years.  I just brought it back to Colorado, and now I find that I'm not really using it at all much anymore due to the fact that I now have a G-wagen instead.  This truck is in really very good condition.  The paint and interior are exceptionally clean and quite good, and I suspect that the previous owner spent a fair amount on the paint and interior.  It really turns heads.  There are a few chips in the paint, and a few nicks, but this is easily the best looking classic Land Rover I've owned (out of about 6 of them).  The paint is frankly better than what it would have looked like new.  The chassis is decent, and the front and rear members were replaced at some point in the past.  there is some surface rust underneath (see photos), but no rust-through and not the kind of cancer you often see on these old Land Rovers.  I was told by the previous owner that this truck was originally delivered to Saudi Arabia, which might explain why it has air conditioning, left hand drive, and an almost non-functioning heater.  The A/C doesn't work currently, and the compressor was removed, but the evaporator and undermount unit seem to be complete. The vacuum line that goes to the center diff lock switch needs to be replaced so that the diff lock will work properly.  That is a common problem with these military transfer cases, and the parts are readily available.  A couple of the rear plastic light lenses are faded and/or need to be replaced.  Rovers North has most of this stuff. The truck easily goes highway speeds, as I drove it from NY to Minnesota to Montana to Colorado over the years, without any problems or glitches whatsoever. Really very solid and trustworthy, and I wouldn't hesitate to get in and drive this old fellow, although you have to realize that these things do ride and handle like trucks. This truck is registered in my name in Minnesota, but with no title, ONLY A BILL OF SALE. Because of the age of the vehicle, NY didn't title it, and the seller had only registration papers that he signed over to me.  Minnesota got all snarky about this and wanted me to post a bond because Minnesota (unlike NY) does have titles for vehicles that age.  The compromise (at least from their standpoint) was that they allowed me to register the vehicle and gave me Minnesota plates, but wouldn't give me a title without a bond.  I will also note that the Minnesota registration lists this as a 1972 model, which I don't think is correct since the Stage I's were made later than that. Thus, I will sell this with a Bill of Sale only.  I've factored that issue into my asking price because I know that in some states (like Minnesota), that can be a hassle. On the other hand, if you compare this Stage I with an NAS Defender -- which most people mistake it for -- it's worth it.  NAS Defender 110's are going for like ten billion dollars (perhaps a minor exaggeration), but this is fairly close to the same thing (sans coil springs), but at a fraction of the cost, and in a better color. This rig also more than favorably compares to many of the overseas Defenders/110s you see on eBay.  For one thing, you don't need to import this and go through customs, risking a denial of entry, which is becoming a danger with imported Defenders.  For another thing, this fellow is already left hand drive, so it doesn't need to be converted.  Anyway, just my two cents' worth.  Nice truck.  I think you'll agree, especially for the price.

Jaguar Land Rover proposes seats that scientifically massage your butt, for your health

Thu, Jan 16 2020

Habitually sitting too long can degrade a person's health. Scientific research has proven that dormancy can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, deep-vein thrombosis, and metabolic syndrome, according to the Harvard Medical School. Although sitting can be avoided in many cases, such as using a standing desk at work, taking a seat is the only option when hopping in the car for a drive. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is hoping to address this negative aspect of cars with a new high-tech seat that the company says mimics the act of walking.  JLR calls the concept a shape-shifting, or morphable, seat system, and it is currently in a trial period with Jaguar Land Rover’s Body Interiors Research division. Using actuators built into the seat's foam, the seat will constantly be in motion with micro-adjustments that can be tuned to the needs of different people and body types. JLR believes it has created a system that recreates what is known as pelvic oscillation, a motion that can supposedly trick the brain into thinking the body is walking. In addition to helping to prevent internal health issues, JLR also notes that a sedentary lifestyle can degrade and shorten muscles in the legs, hips, and rear. If these muscles are worked on a regular basis, the chance and risk of injury and back issues could potentially be reduced. The new seats are just one of many car interior technologies JLR has explored. In the past, we've seen tech that tracks brainwaves and heart rates, creates augmented reality, helps prevent motion sickness, and helps stop the spread of germs. They've also taken the time to have an expert demonstrate the perfect seating position. Most of this stuff is experimental for now, but it's possible similar features could eventually trickle down to production cars, in time. See how the seat moves in the video below. Jaguar Land Rover to recall 44,000 vehicles over excessive diesel emissions

Thu, Mar 14 2019

Jaguar Land Rover is recalling 44,000 vehicles in the U.K. due to some of its vehicles emitting higher CO2 emissions than were officially stated. The recall is said to affect vehicles equipped with JLR's 2.0-liter diesel engine in cars built between 2014 and 2018. Quite a few models are affected, including the Jaguar XE, XF, E-Pace, F-Pace, along with the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Sport. The excessive CO2 emissions were discovered by the British vehicle certification agency, who then reported it to JLR. The company is reportedly working on a fix that will satisfy the agency and bring the cars back in line with their stated CO2 emissions. As of now, JLR is not saying what the fix will entail. A statement from JLR reads: "The modifications will be made free of charge, and every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to the customer." The U.K. magazine Which? said JLR told them owners might experience minor changes to the "overall vehicle experience." Reading between the lines there, that sounds like there could be some pretty serious tampering with the engine software, but we'll leave the speculation to a minimum for now. CO2 emissions numbers are used in the U.K. to set tax levels for vehicles, which means JLR could have gotten out of some taxation with its artificially low CO2 numbers. At this point we don't know how badly the numbers are off, so it's impossible to know how egregious the mislabeling is. There also isn't any explanation for why the CO2 numbers are off, but this is all information that could be forthcoming. The 44,000 number could rise, too, because the UK vehicle standards agency says that some gasoline models could also be involved. That would open a whole new can of worms for JLR. Some Jaguar vehicles (XE, XF and F-Pace) offer a 2.0-liter diesel option for the U.S., but Land Rover's only diesel it sells here now is the 3.0-liter V6. For the time being there's no recall out on the diesel or gas engines from JLR in the U.S. There's no chatter surrounding emissions cheat devices like those involved with Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal. Nor does the scale of whatever the problem is come anywhere near the amount of Volkswagen diesels that needed to be recalled or taken off the roads. We'll be keeping tabs on the situation to see if this expands any further than the U.K. Green Recalls Jaguar Land Rover SUV Diesel Vehicles Luxury Sedan

Jaguar Land Rover may build factory in Saudi Arabia

Tue, 11 Dec 2012

The Middle East is one of the fastest-growing markets for Land Rover, so it makes sense that the automaker is looking to set up shop in the region. According to Automotive News, Jaguar Land Rover is in talks with the people of Saudi Arabia to build a factory in the country at an expected initial cost of $1.2 billion. Still in the early stage of talks, the proposed facility could start up by 2017 using locally sourced materials such as steel and aluminum.
Such an arrangement could be beneficial for both entities as Saudi Arabia looks to diversify its oil-reliant economy and Land Rover could get local production capacity of around 50,000 units. The report also says that the agreement talks about the possibility for Jaguar models to be built at the same plant further down the road.
This won't be the first vehicle produced in Saudi Arabia - that honor goes to the KSU Gazal-1 - but it will be the first from a major global automaker.
