Lambo to quarantine twin-turbo V8 to Urus

Lamborghini is planning to slot a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 into the Urus sport utility vehicle. But don't expect the engine to make its way into the Italian firm's supercars anytime soon. According to the latest report, that forced-induction mill will be limited exclusively to the sport ute for the foreseeable future. Speaking with Autocar, CEO Stephan Winkelmann reiterated that the Urus will be the only Lamborghini model powered by the turbo eight. "On the supersports cars we are convinced that the choices we have made with the naturally aspirated engines are still the right ones," said Winkelmann. "We are not saying that future engines will never beat what we have in our cars; we are saying as long as there is nothing that is better, especially at low revs or in terms of the sound that the V10 and V12 have, we stick to them." While its rivals have embraced turbocharging, Lamborghini has been a steadfast holdout for high-revving, naturally aspirated engines with two-digit cylinder counts. Ferrari, for example, has slotted a turbocharged V8 into both the California T and 488 GTB. McLaren uses a turbo V8 in all its models. Lambo's own sister brands Porsche and Bugatti also use turbochargers. But the Huracan eschews forced induction for an atmospheric V10, as does the Aventador for a V12. The Volkswagen Group of which Lamborghini is part employs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for both the Bentley Continental and numerous Audi models. We'll likely be looking at a version of this engine to power the Urus, which is also expected to offer additional powertrain options in the future. Lamborghini Aventador Pirelli Edition available this summer

Lamborghini offers buyers incredible levels of performance combined with angular, avant-garde styling That grabs everyone's attention. Now, the Italian brand is giving its customers the chance to flaunt their supercars even more with a new Aventador Pirelli Edition. Designed to celebrate Lamborghini's relationship with Pirelli that goes back to the tires on the original 350 GTV prototype, these special-edition Aventadors keep all of the high-performance mechanicals and add a little extra to show off in two available looks. The first paints the roof, pillars, mirrors, engine cover and intakes matte black and gives the body a high-gloss finish in the buyer's choice of six colors. Alternatively, the supercars can have gloss black for those portions and paint the rest of the bodywork in a choice of four matte shades. Either the coupe or roadster can be ordered this way. Regardless finish, all of these Aventadors get a thin, red stripe over the roof, engine cover, mirrors and air intakes. The whole look is completed with red brake calipers (yellow for Rosso Mars models) and gloss-black wheels. As should be obvious, these editions wear the Pirelli tires, specifically P Zeros. The interior carries the motif inside. The seats are clad in black Alcantara and feature red stitching along with Lamborghini and Pirelli crests on them. The red stripe from the outside also covers the ceiling and seats, too. Naturally, a plaque identifies these models as part of this special-edition series. The Aventador's usual mechanical bits hide underneath the two-tone look, meaning each is powered by a 6.5-liter V12 pumping out 691 horsepower with power going to all four wheels. The Pirelli Editions are available for order now and deliveries start in the early summer of 2015.

Lamborghini Asterion could still see showrooms

At the 2014 Paris Motor Show, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Maxim after the introduction of the stunning Asterion hybrid, "I strongly believe that this is not a car that will be in production, and we will not do it." However, the Asterion concept came more than a year after Winklemann told that same magazine, at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, that "Lamborghini was not interested in hybrids." He repeated the sentiment in Paris, saying, "We're still not interested." Well, someone at Lamborghini (or the Volkswagen Group?) does appear to be interested. The company's head of R&D, Maurizio Reggiani, told Autocar the story of the Asterion's development "started a couple of years ago" and is still being carried out in order to understand a real world hybrid application that would satisfy Lamborghini brand values – meaning electric assistance for a naturally aspirated engine with a high cylinder count. Reggiani never hints about the Asterion actually going on sale, but does tell Autocar, "The discussions inside Lamborghini now are about the potential cost of the car," and how it would be positioned. Having been told that it could sell for the price of the Aventador plus the hybrid drivetrain, Autocar figures an MSRP of 350,000 pounds ($551K US). The phrase "hybrid supercar" immediately brings three cracking coupes to mind, but the Asterion – were it to make production – wouldn't target that group; said Winklemann in that Maxim interview, "It's not meant to go on the racetrack. The acceleration is good, and the top speed, but in handling it would be out-beaten by the others. It's more a hyper-cruiser." We're fine with that, Mr. Winklemann – we think the Aston Martin Vanquish, Bentley Continental GT and Ferrari F12 Berlinetta could use the company. Bring it.
